In class we learned about the social learning theory, the theory that children learn masculine or feminine identities through differential reinforcement and observational learning. An example provided was children seeing which toys are for “girls” or for “boys”. An article I found stated that children are more likely to imitate those people they perceive as similar to themselves (PsychLogic, 2021). Models that may influence children are their parents, friends at school, or someone they see on TV (PsychLogic, 2021). I remember when I was a kid I would always play with dolls, specifically Barbie, because a lot of my friends did as well. So, how can the social learning theory be applied to the development of gender roles?
