Effects of Conflict in the Workplace: Age Differences/ Level of Management

Throughout our lives we are often faced with situations where we have to deal with many different types of people. A lot of our encounters happen while we are at work. In the workplace, often there are conversations that happen with either co-workers or management that are incompetent. The focus of this paper will be to specifically look at the conflict patterns among different age groups and levels of management. This paper will also examine factors that lead to, characterize and result from various forms of workplace conflict between co-workers and management.

H1:Conflict between older employees is less common than with younger employees.

Having to work with people of all different ages can be fairly tough simply because of the communication styles. There is often conflict among older employees and younger employees because of misunderstandings. Usually older adults would be less likely to display active destructive behaviors (Davis et al., 2009). Conflict typically occurs when there is a disconnect in a conversation between people. Older adults are more likely than younger adults to respond to conflict in more active constructive ways rather than cause conflict or display destructive behavior. This being said, sometimes it is harder for these individuals to get along in the workplace because of the age gap and mindset of the two.

H2: Workplace conflict has negative effects on employees and management.

Generally, conflict is most commonly associated with a negative connotation. When having conflict, especially in the workplace, it can be harmful to everyone who is around. Conflict causes unnecessary tension, and an unhealthy work environment. This causes employees to not want to work together and makes it an undesirable place to be. In group settings, individuals who feel threatened or attacked by others may try to isolate themselves from the group. This type of behavior would make it extremely unlikely that members would identify with one another (Thiel et al., 2018). When negative conflicts arise in the workplace it is difficult to find solutions. Professionally, to avoid conflict, it is best to stay away from drama, be friendly with co-workers, focus on your tasks, and communicate problems with one another as they come up in a mature way.

H3: As willingness to open up increases, conflict among employees also increases.

As we may know, we sometimes spend more time at work than we do at home, creating personal connections with our co-workers. Often, we befriend our co-workers and talk about our personal lives and engage in outside of work activities. The risk in getting too comfortable with other co-workers is that anything you have said could be brought up to a manager, or taken the wrong way which could potentially get you in trouble. Interpersonal feelings of all intensities can create conflicts of interest. Even mild liking or disliking for a person can bias judgments of their performance. This can create tension between co-workers and offer unfairness. Getting too comfortable in workplace settings can hinder your ability to remain professional and separate work colleagues and friends.

Conflict is something that is inevitable in the workplace and in general. Conflict can often solve problems or promote positive and needed change in a workplace. Although, most times, conflict has a negative impact on people. When there is negative conflict in the workplace, it often results in low employee motivation, turnover and lack of productivity. There are many different types of conflicts that are expressed in the workplace. Age differences and level of management play factors in how conflict may occur. The difference between the way that older adults speak and the way younger adults speak can create incompetence and increase tensions.
