produce a report of or equivalent to 2500 words based on the selection of the powertrain, transmission and driveline of a racecar.

Title: Powertrain & transmission matching
Aims:
You will write a report based on the selection of the powertrain, transmission and driveline for a racecar. This report may be used in the selection of these components in the team project module.

Learning Outcomes:
LO2 Apply, an integrated or systems approach in order to solve engineering problems. (EA4b)
LO3 Appraise contexts in which knowledge of engineering can be applied e.g. operations and management, technology development, etc. (EP1b)

Assessment Brief:
You are required to produce a report of or equivalent to 2500 words based on the selection of the powertrain, transmission and driveline of a racecar.

You are required to specify vehicle performance targets, which are appropriate for the intended use. The targets used, as well as any assumptions or estimates should be clearly explained and justified.

You should select two powertrain options which can be conventional (IC engine) or electric motor based.

You should create a spreadsheet-based performance analysis and powertrain matching tool, which you will use to select and optimise transmission and driveline ratios with the powertrain options. You should carry out a simplified in-vehicle performance analysis in order to assess the powertrain options with respect to the targets set.

The report should include details of all calculations and input data used in your performance analysis and powertrain-matching tool. Any assumptions or estimates used should be clearly explained and justified.

The output of this analysis should lead to selection of the most appropriate option (powertrain, transmission and driveline ratios) for the vehicle.

Minimum Secondary Research Source Requirements: Level HE5
As a minimum the Reference List should include a total of five sources across academic books and refereed academic journals.
Assessment:
The marks for this assignment will contribute 50% of the final mark. The assessment will be marked according to the General Assessment Criteria for Written Assessments.
You should ensure you address all points specified in the assessment:
• Setting of appropriate vehicle performance targets.
• Evidence of the development and use of a spreadsheet based tool for powertrain matching and performance analysis.
• Presentation and analysis of the results of powertrain matching and in-vehicle performance analysis.
• Final selection of powertrain, transmission & driveline for the vehicle.

General Considerations:
The assignment involves some research, understanding and evaluating the research and producing a coherent presentation. Much of this information is available on the internet, however students should AVOID the temptation of “cutting and pasting” directly from the Internet, and then placing it in their presentation WITHOUT having the courtesy of acknowledging that the information in the appropriate manner using the Harvard or similar methods. The Harvard Referencing system is explained through the research link contained in BISSTO-LEAP and explained in the publication Cite Me I’m Yours (Harvard style).
