Read the following from chapter 6 of Major Problems in American Women’s History – I posted a pdf.
Document 2 “A Diarist Relates a Gentleman’s Seduction of a 14 Year-Old-Girl to His Wife’s Novel Reading, 1806†p. 135

Their activities outside of the home were still attached to roles specifically assigned to women. This period is a stepping stone for how women continue to expand their roles from this point forward. Due to the Second Great Awakening women were now expected to be morally superior and to be the moral compass for their homes, communities and for larger society. PROMPT
Yes, the reading on the solitary vice is about masturbation. For this discussion, discuss why this document is relevant to women’s new moral responsibility and what we can learn about sexual norms during this period. Here are some guiding questions: Why were women warning mother’s about this? It’s not men warning fathers or women warning parents. What does this tell us about women’s sexuality during that period? Do you think that there is any relevance to sexual norms in America today? Focus your initial response more. Your peers read the document so you should do less summary and more analysis and critical thinking. The purpose of these discussions, is to use critical thinking and to exchange ideas with your classmates. You should reference this week’s material and give specific detail in a way that fosters a productive discussion. Your peers read the same text as you, so it’s not effective to give a full summary of the reading in your initial post. Please use only these material, not other sources.
