What is the association between FOC and mental wellbeing?
Aims of the study (State what you intend to achieve with your study)
The brief literature review above has resulted in the creation of interlinked assumptions
regarding factors that influence the association between FOC and mental wellbeing. For
instance, it has been established that there is a link between age and FOC, but this link is not
clearly understood. Additionally, the sparsity of research that considers race variations in
the association between FOC and mental wellbeing makes it hard to generalize results.
Thus, the primary aim of the proposed study remains to examine the association between
FOC and mental wellbeing in the BAME community, with race variations, age, and gender as
moderating variables.
Research Hypotheses/Research Questions (if enough previous literature to make specific
predictions you will have hypotheses, if not research questions)

By conducting this research, the following research questions will be answered:
- What is the association between FOC and mental wellbeing?
- What role does age play in this association?
- What roles does gender play in this association?
- Are these associations observed across racial/ethnic groups?
Hypothesis: Taking into consideration previous research, aims of the proposed study and
the research questions posed. I expect: - A positive association between fear of crime and negative feelings and emotions.
- FOC will be higher amongst non-white British participants.
As there is such conflicting research that considers age and gender when investigating the
consequences of FOC, I cannot make predictions, and their role in the association between
FOC and mental wellbeing will be examined in the proposed study.
Methods
(Complete each Methods sub-section separately, on the right column)
Design
(Correlational,
experimental, quasiexperimental, number of
measurement times)
The proposed empirical research study will use a quantitative
approach to gather and analyse date. It will utilise a multi
sectional online questionnaire survey designed to facilitate
correlational analysis of participants’ experiences of fearing
victimisation/crime, the role of sociodemographic factors and
their impact on individuals’ mental wellbeing.
Participants
(Their defining
characteristics, how
many, sampling method –
how you will select them)
Participants(pps) will be recruited using opportunity sampling,
this will be more convenient and a quick way to ensure a bigger
sample. A G power analysis will be used to determine the
sample size, which is estimated to be around 100 participants,
they are required to be 18+ years of age and must be able to
give full informed consent. The questionnaire will be uploaded
via Qualtrics survey software, a link to the questionnaire will be
4
advertised on posters that will be put on information boards
around the university, local churches, and library. The link will
be posted on social media sites along with the information sheet
to have a diverse sample size.
Due to the nature of the questions and the subject in general,
my sample will exclude participants who have previously been
victims to crime and/or have pre-existing mental health
condition. It will be made clear in the information sheet that
they should not take part in the study as it could potentially be
distressing for them.
