S22 Book Chapter Assignment

Objectives: The objectives of this assignments are to (1) develop skills in synthesizing primary literature in protein biochemistry and (2) practice technical writing skills including use of good organization, structure, logical flow, grammar and style.

Assignment: Write book chapter reviewing the recent primary literature dealing with one protein involved in the HIV-1 life cycle. Topics to be discussed include (1) the role of the protein in the HIV-1 life cycle, (2) details of the protein structure and biological activity, and (3) role (if any) as a therapeutic target for HIV-1 treatment or prevention.

Scope: The body of the assignment should be at least 4000 words, including references

Sources: At a minimum, 20 sources should be referenced, with all being from peer-reviewed journal articles. Use of review articles is encouraged, as long as the review is from a peer-reviewed journal. Web pages that are not from refereed journals can be used to help you get a general background and to find more robust sources, but should not be cited. The paper should be written in your own words and should not include extensive quotation or paraphrasing of published (including online) material. Any figures used should be original. Use the Turnitin originality check (see below) to ensure the originality of your writing.

Format: The assignment should consist of a title page, the body of the assignment and a list of cited literature. Citations should be made using the American Chemical Society (ACS) style using EndNote (see http://library.csus.edu/guides/metzgerd/EN/GettingStarted.pdf). In the body, the pages should be double-spaced with 1″ margins and use Times New Roman 12 point type.

Turnitin: You will be completing an originality report of your drafts and submitting your final book chapter using the web-based service Turnitin accessed through Canvas.
