write a proper business letter to a person who has some influence in the area you want to see change and persuade them to use their position of power to change policy in this area.
Overview:
<
This assignment involves some civic engagement, research skills, and writing. You are going to persuade a person who has some influence to use their position of power to change policies.
<
<
Choose an issue or problem that you see in one of your communities (e.g. your church, your child’s school, your town, state, country…). Choose the best course of action based on your research. Then write a proper business letter to a person who has some influence in the area you want to see change and persuade them to use their position of power to change policy in this area.
<
<
You will automatically be assigned a classmates’ paper for peer review. Please use the rubric to guide your feedback.
<
<
Step One:
<
Choose an issue (related to the topics in the course) that is important to you. Possible topics include: racial inequalities in the prison system, trying juveniles as adults, METCO, rehabilitating sex offenders, advertising (drug companies, aimed at toddlers, etc), tax on sugary drinks, the driving age, parental leave policy, college athletes, etc.
<
<
Step Two:
<
Research ALL perspectives on the issue and formulate a solution based on the evidence.
<
<
Step Three:
<
Choose someone who has some real influence in the area of your topic. For many topics, elected officials would be most appropriate. You can find your elected officials at this website: https://myreps.datamade.us/Links to an external site.
<
<
Many other people also have the power to influence policies and ideas. The president of a pharmaceutical company, Anthony Fauci, the president of the AFL-CIO, Big Pappy, even, sadly, the Kardashians have a lot of power also. You are going to write a business letter so you have to find a postal address for the person of your choice.
<
<
Step Four:
<
Write. Remember that your objective is to persuade this person. Your solution is so clearly backed by statistics, data, and solid research. You are so right that this person should take your idea and make it happen.
<
<
Remember that whoever you are writing to is busy and so is whoever opens their mail. Your letter should be short, respectful, and to the point so that they will read the whole thing. AND it better be perfect in terms of mechanics (i.e. organization, grammar, spelling and punctuation) so that they will take it seriously!
<
<
<
<
The important thing is that you choose a topic that interests you, that have a clear solution and that you can support that solution with evidence!
<
<
(Also, I can’t make you send the letter but I hope you will!)
<
<
All papers must be properly cited.
