End of Legalized Segregation Paper

During the first half of the 20th century, most African Americans lived under a system of legalized segregation that deprived them of rights, including the right to equal access to public accommodations like schools, restaurants, and busses.  By the end of the 1960s, legalized segregation had been largely dismantled.  How did civil rights activists like Martin Luther King, Jr. and supporters like President Kennedy, justify the end of legalized segregation?  How did Southern whites like the congressmen who wrote the Southern Manifesto justify the continuation of segregation?  Using your textbook, explain what the Civil Rights Act of 1964 did to legalized segregation.Be sure to base your paper on a close analysis of the primary sources.  Do not use any outside sources.  Cite your evidence by putting the author?s name and title of the work (for the source readings) and the textbook name and page number (for context pulled from the textbook) in parentheses.  For example: (Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, p. 259)(These United States, p. 388)
