Software Applications Linux Project Paper
Sandwich Islands, LLC has a new research and development group called SIDG. All systems in SIDG will run the Linux operating system and will access/share resources across SIDGs ~500 client operating system desktops/laptops currently running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. There is a mix of desktop and laptop systems.Current Desktop/Laptop Configuration for Windows 8.1:Processor: Intel Core i3 Second GenerationMemory: 8GB RAMHard Drive: 350GBNetwork Card: 10/100/1000 MbpsUSB Ports: 4 USB 3.0Monitor: 22-inch LCDCurrent Desktop/Laptop Configuration for Windows 7:Processor: Intel Core 2 DuoMemory: 2GB RAMHard Drive: 80GBNetwork Card: 10/100 MbpsUSB Ports: 4 USB 2.0Monitor: 17-inch LCDYour Supervisor has tasked you with a proposal to replace all Windows systems with Linux systems. You will implement the Linux variant that in your professional opinion best meets SIDGs needs. You must address the following in your proposal, and you may make any assumptions which are not explicitly specified (provided you adequately document these assumptions in your proposal):Plan for the migration from Windows to Linux, considering time, cost, and manpower.Determine how the Linux workstations will talk to the exiting ActiveDirectory infrastructure. NOTE: SIDG utilizes Windows Server 2016 domain controllers AD. **These backend services are NOT changing in the upgrade**Research and justify whether existing computer hardware or new hardware will be usedDetermine the Linux distro/software applications to be used and the installation optionsMake every effort to present users with a familiar desktop environmentDocument how the systems will receive IP addressesDocument how the systems will access name resolution (DNS)Document how users will logon to the ActiveDirectory domainDocument how users will access and share files on the networkDocument how users will printDocument how (or if) data will be encrypted (and why)
