Urban Tourism trend report – 2021–2022 academic yearAssignment descriptionIn this series of classes, you will write an individual trend report. You are getting to know the tourism industry. This industry is very flexible and changes rapidly. In order to learn to detect those changes, you will be asked to put yourself in the role of trendwatcher. Together, we will work towards a full professional report, in which you describe how tourism is developing. It is important for the travel industry to know what developments are taking place in tourism, against the backdrop of a society that is changing as a whole. As a trendwatcher, you will look at both the travel industry and the social developments that affect it. You will describe the results of your search in a trend report, some requirements for which you can find in the assessment form on Moodle. The trend report should be about inbound urban tourism, focusing on a specific city of your choice. The expected contents of each chapter are described below.AssignmentTutorOnlineThe report must not exceed 1,400 words, excluding images, assignment 5, bibliography and appendices.Formulate your objective (max. 100 words)Each trend report begins with a description of the objective of the report. The general aim is to inform tourism decision-makers, businesses and other tourism professionals about what is going on in inbound urban tourism. You want to inform readers of recent developments, but also provide a glimpse of the future so that decisions can be taken based on your data. You look ahead on the basis of figures and describe various possible future scenarios. The future is, of course, difficult to predict – but if you see, for example, that more and more people do not want to fly, you can plot that trend into the future, so that the travel industry will look for other means of transport and destinations. In this chapter, you should specify the specific objective of your trend report (focused on your city of choice) further. Important trends in tourism (max. 300 words)Together with your fellow students, you will compile a trend dictionary throughout the series of classes. Each student must add five tourism trends/current concepts. You will create this glossary together in Teams, thus forming a learning community. You should incorporate your contribution to the trend dictionary into your own trend report. Conduct desk research and follow APA guidelines to cite the source(s) you used. This will involve drawing up trend pyramids for demographic, economic, social, technological, ecological or political developments. These trend pyramids must show a logical connection between tourism trends at the mega, maxi and micro levels. When describing trends at the mega level, you should use relevant material (e.g. figures) from official sources as your point of departure. For trends at the maxi and micro levels, you can also use company websites, blogs, vlogs and other sources.Next, describe how each of the three tourism trends at the micro level is reflected in urban tourism, with specific examples from your chosen city region. Base this information on official, reliable and relevant sources as well. Predict future trends using scenarios (max. 500 words)In this chapter, you will examine the future by means of an exploratory scenario analysis. With the help of a scenario framework, you will contrast two indefinite trends at the mega level from the pyramids in the previous chapter, eventually leading to four future scenarios . You must show these in a clear scenario template. This is an opportunity to show your creativity as a trendwatcher and futurologist. Select and substantiate which of the four scenario’s is most likely to be a doom scenario and which is likely to be a dream scenario. You should describe what the near future of inbound urban tourism in your city will look like if the positive developments continue (dream scenario) or what you expect to happen if the negative developments prevail (doom scenario). This concerns the future in 20 years’ time. Explain which two indefinite trends at the mega level you have chosen and why, and how the rest of the trend pyramid is linked to them. What impact does the development of the chosen trends at the mega level have on the trends at the micro level? Base your expectations on figures and growth/contraction forecasts, but also on other sources. On the basis of the scenario analysis, draw up a dream and a doom scenario for tourism in your city region. Finally, provide a clear conclusion to the report that shows the common thread between all chapters of the report and culminates in your ultimate dream scenario. My dream scenario for urban tourism in city XIn your last assignment as a trendwatcher, you will present your dream scenario for incoming urban tourism in your chosen city. You can do this in any (creative) way you choose, so there is no prescribed form. This could be a video, a collage or a podcast, a 3D model for example, but perhaps you have much better trendy ideas as a futurologist. Surprise us. A requirement is that you link the content to and base it on your previous chapters, that you outline a realistic picture of your ideal future and that the presentation forms a conclusion to your report. Image and sound recordings should not exceed three minutes. List of sources (APA format)As part of this report, you will learn how to look for sources relevant to the tourism industry (sector reports) and beyond (figures from official bodies). This time, your list of sources will also be assessed for quality.
