DISCUSSION FORUM PROMPT
You have been working as a nursing manager on a busy inpatient medical unit for the past four years. Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, you have noticed a large increase in staff turnover and have experienced great difficulty in recruiting and retaining new staff to the floor. Staff that have been working on the unit prior to the start of the pandemic have confided in you that they are experiencing burnout due to working short-staffed almost daily. Some of your staff have expressed wanting to leave the profession entirely and others are actively looking for new nursing jobs. You do not want to lose the experienced staff you have and want to be successful at recruiting and retaining staff on the unit.
Please respond to the following questions:
- As the unit’s manager, what are some questions you can ask your staff that may help you develop strategies to address the increase in staff turnover?
- If you were the manager of this unit, what are some strategies you could use to increase recruitment and retention of staff? How would these strategies vary for different age groups?
- How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted nursing recruitment and retention in your experience? Please share one effective or innovative evidence-informed strategy that leaders are using in your workplace to recruit and retain nurses?
