It’s easy to discuss the way things “should be” regarding access to affordable, quality healthcare. But what actions can be taken to enact actual change? For this discussion, you will assume a role of leadership, power, and influence within your community. In this role, you have the ability to propose a program or service that can improve the health of your community. Considering your role, respond to the following question:

1. Propose one measure that will improve the health of your community, addressing health disparities and socioeconomic factors.

2. Provide a brief summary detailing the need for this measure (this may include a little background on your community/demographics).

3. Briefly explain how you will enact and support the measure.

4. Summarize any push-back you expect to receive (and from whom).

5. Detail what is needed to approve or enact this measure (ex: city council approval, city budget approval, mayoral endorsement, state funding, grants, etc.)

6. Speak of one policy of your choice analyze how this policy influence the structure and financing of health care, practice, and health outcomes.

C.Z. is a 20-year-old Caucasian male who is in his second year of college. He is seeking treatment due to persistent fears that campus security and the local police are tracking and surveilling him. He cites occasional lags in his internet speed as evidence that surveillance devices are interfering with his electronics. His intense anxiety about this has begun getting in the way of his ability to complete schoolwork, and his friends are concerned – he says they have told him, “you’re not making sense.”

C.Z. occasionally laughs abruptly and inappropriately and sometimes stops speaking mid-sentence, looking off in the distance as though he sees or hears something. He expresses concern about electronics in the room (phone, computer) potentially being monitored and asks repeatedly about patient confidentiality, stating that he wants to be sure the police won’t be informed about his treatment. His beliefs are fixed, and if they are challenged, his tone becomes hostile.

Questions:

1)  Imagine that you are a first-line manager of a department in a relatively small hospital located in a semi-rural area. For many months there had been rumors of a possible merger with another semi-rural hospital half again the size of yours located about 12 miles away. Jax is a 66-year-old Caucasian female whose wife has encouraged her to seek treatment. She has never been in therapy before, and has no history of depression or anxiety. However, her alcohol use has recently been getting in the way of her marriage, and interfering with her newly-retired life. She describes drinking increasing amounts over the last year, currently consuming approximately a six-pack of beer per day. She notes that this amount “doesn’t give me the same buzz as it used to.” She denies ever experiencing “the shakes” or any other withdrawal symptoms if she skips a day of drinking.

Jax comments that her wife is her biggest motivation to decrease her alcohol use. She tells Jax that she gets argumentative and irritable when she drinks, though she does not always remember these incidents. She has also fallen while intoxicated twice, causing bruises both times and hitting her head on one of the occasions.

3. (focus) Stay focused on the topic.  Everything you write should have a connection to the topic and your ideas.  

4. (clarity) When you proofread check for common errors like fragments, run-on’s, commonly confused words, tense shift, subject-verb disagreement, spelling, etc.  Try to adhere to the KISS Principle.  This means keep your sentences short and simple and divide your composition into short, easy to read paragraphs.  For a 500-word composition you should have between six and eight paragraphs.
