Determine if you can verify or refute the research department’s claim.
Assignment – Case Study: Statistical Inference
Overview
The research department of an appliance manufacturing firm has developed a new bimetallic thermal sensor for its toaster. The new bimetallic thermal sensor can sense the temperature of the bread and move the lever arm to activate the switch. The research department claims that the new bimetallic thermal sensor will reduce appliance returns under the one-year full warranty by 2%–6%. To determine if the claim can be supported, the testing department selects a group of the toasters manufactured with the new bimetallic thermal sensor and a group with the old thermal sensor and subjects them to a normal year’s worth of wear. Out of 250 toasters tested with the new bimetallic thermal sensor, 8 would have been returned. Seventeen would have been returned out of the 250 toasters with the old thermal sensor. As the manager of the appliance manufacturing process, use a statistical procedure to verify or refute the research department’s claim.
Instructions
Create 8–10 slides, including a cover and a sources list, for a presentation to the director of the manufacturing plant in which you:
1. Summarize the problem with the appliance manufacturing firm’s toaster.
2. Propose the statistical inference to use to solve the problem. Support your decision using a scholarly reference.
3. Using Excel:
. Develop a flowchart for the proposed statistical inference, including specific steps.
. Compute all statistical calculations.
· Place your flowchart in a slide.
· Determine if you can verify or refute the research department’s claim.

Consider how federal agendas promote healthcare issues and how these healthcare issues become agenda priorities.
Discussion WK 1: Presidential Agendas
Rather than focus on the treatment of chronic disease, policies that influence population health tend to emphasize prevention and wellness; the reduction or elimination of waste and the eradication of health disparities based on race, ethnicity, language, income, gender, sexual orientation, disability and other factors. The reasoning is that good health belongs to the whole, not just an individual. (New York State Dept. of Health, n.d.)
Regardless of political affiliation, every citizen has a stake in healthcare policy decisions. Hence, it is little wonder why healthcare items become such high-profile components of presidential agendas. It is also little wonder why they become such hotly debated agenda items.
Consider a topic (mental health, HIV, opioid epidemic, pandemics, obesity, prescription drug prices, or many others) that rises to the presidential level. How did the current and previous presidents handle the problem? What would you do differently?

To Prepare:
· Review the Resources and reflect on the importance of agenda setting.
· Consider how federal agendas promote healthcare issues and how these healthcare issues become agenda priorities.
By Day 3 of Week 1
Post your response to the discussion question: Consider a population health topic that rises to the presidential agenda level. Which social determinant most affects this health issue? How did two recent presidents handle the problem? What would you do differently?
By Day 6 of Week 1
Respond to at least two of your colleagues* on two different days by expanding on their response and providing an example that supports their explanation or respectfully challenging their explanation and providing an example.

Justify the role of the nurse in agenda setting for healthcare issues.
Assignment: Agenda Comparison Grid and Fact Sheet
It may seem to you that healthcare has been a national topic of debate among political leaders for as long as you can remember.
Healthcare has been a policy item and a topic of debate not only in recent times but as far back as the administration of the second U.S. president, John Adams. In 1798, Adams signed legislation requiring that 20 cents per month of a sailor’s paycheck be set aside for covering their medical bills. This represented the first major piece of U.S. healthcare legislation, and the topic of healthcare has been woven into presidential agendas and political debate ever since.
As a healthcare professional, you may be called upon to provide expertise, guidance and/or opinions on healthcare matters as they are debated for inclusion into new policy. You may also be involved in planning new organizational policy and responses to changes in legislation. For all of these reasons you should be prepared to speak to national healthcare issues making the news.
In this Assignment, you will analyze recent presidential healthcare agendas. You also will prepare a fact sheet to communicate the importance of a healthcare issue and the impact on this issue of recent or proposed policy.
To Prepare:
· Review the agenda priorities of the current/sitting U.S. president and at least one previous presidential administration.
· Select an issue related to healthcare that was addressed by two U.S. presidential administrations (current and previous).
· Consider how you would communicate the importance of a healthcare issue to a legislator/policymaker or a member of their staff for inclusion on an agenda.
· Use your Week 1 Discussion post to help with this assignment.
The Assignment: (1- to 2-page Comparison Grid, 1-Page Analysis, and 1-page narrative) with a title page. This is an APA paper. Use 2-3 course resources and at least 2 outside resources.
Part 1: Agenda Comparison Grid
Use the Agenda Comparison Grid Template found in the Learning Resources and complete the Part 1: Agenda Comparison Grid based on the current/sitting U.S. president and the previous president, and their agendas related to the population health concern you selected. Be sure to address the following:
· Identify and provide a brief description of the population health concern you selected.
· Explain how each of the presidential administrations approached the issue.
· Identify the allocation of resources that the presidents dedicated to this issue.
Part 2: Agenda Comparison Grid Analysis
Using the information you recorded in Part 1: Agenda Comparison Grid on the template, complete the Part 2: Agenda Comparison Grid Analysis portion of the template, by addressing the following:
· Which administrative agency (like HHS, CDC, FDA, OHSA) would most likely be responsible for helping you address the healthcare issue you selected and why is this agency the most helpful for the issue?
· How do you think your selected healthcare issue might get on the presidential agenda? How does it stay there?
· An entrepreneur/champion/sponsor helps to move the issue forward. Who would you choose to be the entrepreneur/champion/sponsor (this can be a celebrity, a legislator, an agency director, or others) of the healthcare issue you selected and why would this person be a good entrepreneur/ champion/sponsor? An example is Michael J. Fox is champion for Parkinson’s disease.
Part 3: Fact Sheet
Using the information recorded on the template in Parts 1 and 2, develop a 1-page fact sheet that you could use to communicate with a policymaker/legislator or a member of their staff for this healthcare issue. Be sure to address the following:
· Summarize why this healthcare issue is important and should be included in the agenda for legislation.
· Justify the role of the nurse in agenda setting for healthcare issues.

Explain how factors on Loden’s Wheel may have created the conflict noted in incident.
Overview
Loden’s Wheel, also called the Diversity Wheel, is considered an important theory in considering factors of diversity. Used in diversity trainings across the nation, the wheel provides a foundation for thinking about potential conflicts and identifying our blind spots. There are numerous versions and adaptations of Loden’s Wheel; the one selected for use in this course is the most extensive, so that we can analyze the complexities of the topic.
We’ve all witnesses discrimination in some form or another. Often, we focus on how we might react to that discrimination; however, in this assignment, you will identify which of the factors in Loden’s Wheel are most related to the central issue that caused the discrimination.
Prompt
For this journal assignment, think about a time when you witnessed or heard about discrimination. This can be a time when you, a close friend or family member, or a stranger witnessed discrimination, or even something you’ve seen in the media.
To begin this journal assignment, briefly describe the incident. Include a reflection on three to five factors on Loden’s Wheel that are most related to the incident you described. Include two to three possible historic factors (from the outer level of Loden’s Wheel) that may be related.
Specifically, the following rubric criteria must be addressed:
- Describe the incident of discrimination.
- Explain how factors on Loden’s Wheel may have created the conflict noted in incident.
Guidelines for Submission
This assignment must be 200–350 words in length and include references cited in APA format. Consult the Shapiro Library APA Style Guide for more information on citations.
Note: For this journal assignment, you can receive a Proficient, Needs Improvement, or Not Evident score on each of your rubric criteria. There is no Exemplary score for this assignment.
examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.
March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.
When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.
In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.
Post a description of the healthcare organization website you reviewed. Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website). Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not. Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples.

Write a brief analysis (no longer than 2 pages) of the connection between EBP and the Quadruple Aim.
Healthcare organizations continually seek to optimize healthcare performance. For years, this approach was a three-pronged one known as the Triple Aim, with efforts focused on improved population health, enhanced patient experience, and lower healthcare costs.
More recently, this approach has evolved to a Quadruple Aim by including a focus on improving the work life of healthcare providers. Each of these measures are impacted by decisions made at the organizational level, and organizations have increasingly turned to EBP to inform and justify these decisions
To Complete:
Write a brief analysis (no longer than 2 pages) of the connection between EBP and the Quadruple Aim.
Your analysis should address how EBP might (or might not) help reach the Quadruple Aim, including each of the four measures of:
- Patient experience
- Population health
- Costs
- Work life of healthcare providers

Describe the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and its impact on your organization.
Assignment: Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue
The Quadruple Aim provides broad categories of goals to pursue to maintain and improve healthcare. Within each goal are many issues that, if addressed successfully, may have a positive impact on outcomes. For example, healthcare leaders are being tasked to shift from an emphasis on disease management often provided in an acute care setting to health promotion and disease prevention delivered in primary care settings. Efforts in this area can have significant positive impacts by reducing the need for primary healthcare and by reducing the stress on the healthcare system.
Changes in the industry only serve to stress what has always been true; namely, that the healthcare field has always faced significant challenges, and that goals to improve healthcare will always involve multiple stakeholders. This should not seem surprising given the circumstances. Indeed, when a growing population needs care, there are factors involved such as the demands of providing that care and the rising costs associated with healthcare. Generally, it is not surprising that the field of healthcare is an industry facing multifaceted issues that evolve over time.
For this Assignment, you will consider in more detail the healthcare issue/stressor you selected. You will also review research that addresses the issue/stressor and write a white paper to your organization’s leadership that addresses the issue/stressor you selected.
The Assignment (2-3 Pages):
Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue
Develop a 2 to 3 page paper, written to your organization’s leadership team, addressing your selected national healthcare issue/stressor and how it is impacting your work setting. Be sure to address the following:
· Describe the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and its impact on your organization. Use organizational data to quantify the impact (if necessary, seek assistance from leadership or appropriate stakeholders in your organization).
· Provide a brief summary of the two articles you reviewed from outside resources on the national healthcare issue/stressor. Explain how the healthcare issue/stressor is being addressed in other organizations.
· Summarize the strategies used to address the organizational impact of national healthcare issues/stressors presented in the scholarly resources you selected. Explain how they may impact your organization both positively and negatively. Be specific and provide examples.

Describe how you collected data on the social and/or multiple determinants of health and/or health inequities in your analysis
For your Final Project, you will be conducting a truncated community health systems analysis on the town in which you live. Generally, these analyses typically take months to complete, and the resulting final report can easily exceed 20 pages in length. As you do not have the benefit of that time, you will be conducting a topic analysis based on existing information and conversations (i.e., phone, face-to-face, and email conversations) with those in positions of influence in your community. To assist you in your process, explore the Community Health Assessment and Improvement Planning (Links to an external site.) Web page. This Web page can provide many helpful tools and examples should be you become challenged on a particular requirement of this exercise.
In order to address the items in the directives for your final assignment, focus on the following requirements for your Final Project (much of this information can be pulled from previous assignments and discussions you have completed for this class):
· Greatest strengths and need areas of your community, how you assessed the areas of strength and need, and the priority for the need areas
· Strongest and weakest health participants in your community (e.g., hospitals, clinics, etc.)
· Existing community programs that likely cost the most and likely cost the least
· Most effective and least effective community health programs
· Most effective and least effective local hospital health programs
· Factors in your community that exist to support your efforts (e.g., existing health coalitions, mayors support, etc.)
· Challenges that your community faces in taking action (e.g., geographic location, population makeup, budget, etc.)
· National organizations that would likely show interest in supporting your need areas
· Describe how you collected data on the social and/or multiple determinants of health and/or health inequities in your analysis
· Include how you would approach your local health department with your findings
· Include how you would disseminate your findings to the community
· Include how you would engage community partners in your efforts
· Describe how you would utilize quality improvement tools to sustain and/or maintain any changes you implement
· Identify some areas for improvement in your Final Project
· Identify the greatest strength of your Final Project
· Identify the greatest challenge in completing your Final Project
For your community health systems analysis you will
· Identify community strengths and areas for improvement.
· Identify the status of community health needs.
· Define improvement areas to guide the community towards population-based strategies that create a healthier environment (e.g., increased physical activity, improved nutrition, reduced tobacco use and exposure, and chronic disease management).
· Prioritize community needs, and consider appropriate allocation of available resources.
The Final Project
· Must be eight to ten double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Writing Center (Links to an external site.) .
