Assignment

Choose one of the following links representing new media texts to use in your analysis of research strategies:
·

“This TikTok Girl Band Ruined My Life”
 by Grady Smith

·

“I Watched One SNL Episode from Every Season”
 by Drew Gooden

Choose at least one of the links above representing new media texts to view critically. Your journal reflection on your selected new media text should address the following prompts:
· What is the leading research question that drives the text? In other words, what is the person trying to “figure out?”
· Describe in detail the steps this person takes to answer the question. What specific strategies are implemented to track down the answers the individual seeks? How many and which steps did this individual take that are outlined in the Georgetown University source, “15 Steps to Good Research” (located in Module Readings)?
· Discuss the individual’s use of source material. In other words, where does the person’s investigation take him or her? What sources are used to find the answers to the questions?
· Discuss the conclusions that the person comes to. Did they answer their question? If so, what was the answer and how did they arrive at that answer? If not, how do they deal with the ambiguity of not finding a solid place to land? If their question has no definitive answer, how do they conclude their research?

Successful Management Requires International Experience As companies become more global, economic patterns and business practices in one area of the world can determine the success of a company on the other side of the world. At Procter & Gamble (P&G), being a successful global leader requires an international background. A majority of P&G’s 140,000 employees work outside the United States. P&G uses international assignments for employees to learn how business is conducted in another country so that lessons learned there can be applied at home or in another region. Only a quarter of employee relocations originate in the United States; the majority are from place to place across the world outside the United States. An important goal of employees who receive international assignments is to develop local talent to replace themselves. For example, a manager who is being prepared to take over a top finance position in Russia might go to Britain to gain experience working in a more structured and complex market. P&G managers in Europe must learn to keep the company’s products on big-box store shelves such as Carrefour, the European supermarket and discount chain and one of the largest retailers in the world. P&G might send junior U.S. managers to work with European managers who are responsible for products at Carrefour, expecting that they will transfer skills learned in these assignments to dealing with product placement in big-box retailers such as Walmart and Costco.P&G also partners with UNICEF to offer P&G employees in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa the opportunity to take a 3-month sabbatical to work with UNICEF. The program is aimed at employees who have always wanted to undertake humanitarian work but have not had the chance before. UNICEF benefits from the diverse backgrounds of P&G employees as they apply communications, promotion, leadership training, and supply chain management skills. What steps should P&G take to prepare employees for international assignments to help them succeed? Use specific examples in your response.Should P&G also include spouses and family members in preparation for international assignments? Include in your response yes or no and why or why not.

Describe the structure of the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Identify theoretical and technical aspects of the Gram staining procedure.

Lab 3: The Gram Stain: Identify and differentiate bacteria
Learning Outcomes

Describe the structure of the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Identify theoretical and technical aspects of the Gram staining procedure.
Identify the most commonly made mistakes in Gram staining.
Analyze the results of a Gram staining experiment using a light microscope.

About the Gram Stain: Identify and differentiate bacteria Virtual Simulation LabDid you know that there are approximately 5 million-trillion-trillion bacteria in the world? Most of them are harmless, but some can induce disease in an affected host. In this simulation, you will help doctors identify bacteria in a cerebrospinal fluid sample from a patient suspected of suffering from bacterial meningitis.
Explore the bacterial cell wallCompare and contrast the cell wall of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by building your very own bacterial 3D models on the hologram table. Enter the exploration pod to observe in an immersive animation how the four reagents of the Gram stain interact with structural components of the cell wall to color the bacteria.
Perform the gram stainWhen the patient’s fluid sample arrives at the laboratory, equip yourself with protective gear to prepare a bacterial smear and heat fix it to a glass slide. You are now ready to perform the Gram stain in a safe virtual environment. Made a mistake? No worries, hit the big red button on the workbench to repeat the staining procedure until it becomes second nature.
Interpret your findings using a microscopeIn the end, you will use a light microscope to interpret the results of your Gram stain. View the microscopic image on the computer screen, and apply immersion oil to increase magnification 1000x! Will you be able to identify the presence of any bacteria in the patient´s cerebrospinal fluid?
Questions:

Purpose: Please describe in complete sentences and in your own words, the purpose of this experiment.
Complete the following table by predicting colors of bacteria with- and without cell wall as they are processed through the steps of Gram staining.

Steps of Gram Staining
Bacteria containing thick cell wall
Bacteria containing thin cell wall (LPS)

Crystal violet treatment

Iodine

Decolorization

Safranin

A fellow student showed you a gram stained slide where cells containing thick cell walls were stained pink. What would you tell her about the staining procedure? Why?
