Discuss at least 2 programs that could have helped Tammy. Where could she have found out about them?

HETH-4213-M50 – Community Health/Iss/Serv

Scenario:

Tammy is 17 years old and a recent high school graduate. She lives in a small town of about 2,700 people. Most of the town’s residents rely on a larger city nearby for shopping, recreation, and health care. Tammy had dated Steve the last 2 years, but there was never any talk of marriage. Just before graduation she learned that she was pregnant. At Thanksgiving, just as she was completing her seventh month of pregnancy, she went into premature labor. An ambulance rushed her to the emergency room of the hospital in the nearby city for what became a premature birth of her baby. While Tammy was in recovery, doctors determined that her baby was not only premature, it also appeared to have other “developmental abnormalities.” When asked whether she had received any prenatal care, Tammy replied, “No, I couldn’t afford it; besides, I didn’t know where to go to get help.”

Write a 1-2 page Reflection paper answering the following questions. Use credible web sources for your research that are current as of 2010 to the present, preferably 3 or more.

1. What is prenatal care and how could prenatal care have changed the course of Tammy’s pregnancy and delivery?

2. What impact could Steve’s involvement have had on the outcome of Tammy’s pregnancy?

3. What impact does this scenario have on our society? Discuss specifics. What changes are needed in our society?

4. Discuss at least 2 programs that could have helped Tammy. Where could she have found out about them?

What can educators do to prepare themselves to feel more competent and confident when working with children with physical disabilities?

Clarissa is a very petite four-year-old with significant language delays, as well as physical delays. The physical delays, in combination with her small stature (she is closer to the size of a two-year-old), means she experiences barriers in her child-care program as most program settings are designed for children that are of “average” size.

1. What might her educator do to remove these barriers and facilitate Clarissa’s participation in the program? (Refer to the definition of inclusion.)

2. What additional resources would you need to support her language development?

3. What can educators do to prepare themselves to feel more competent and confident when working with children with physical disabilities?

Research a forecasting method that was not covered in this course, such as a 3rd order exponential smoothing or neural network trend estimation.

Research a forecasting method that was not covered in this course, such as a 3rd order exponential smoothing or neural network trend estimation. Then share the following with the class:

  1. Original focus or purpose of the method.
  2. The type of data handled.
  3. The details of the algorithm / equations.
  4. How it performs compared to other methods with a similar focus. (If a benchmark comparison was not provided, then state it.)
  5. Provide an example of how the method can be used in your organization.

OPTION 2: Experiential – Organizational Adoption

From your work or an organization where you have first-hand knowledge, discuss a forecast that the organization performs on a routine basis. (Do not share proprietary information or violate confidentiality.) This can be sales revenues, market share, supply and demand, material or labor costs, technology performance, etc. If your work experience did not expose you to any forecasting exercises, then research an organization or scan the journals for an appropriate article that involved a forecast. Then share with the class the following:

  1. The purpose of the forecast.
  2. The forecast method used (may be one that was not covered in this course). Include details of the forecasting method.
  3. Describe the underlying data or information on which the forecast was based. (Description based on the concepts covered to date.)
  4. The management decision that was ultimately made based on the forecast results, if known. (If is not known, then state so, and provide a plausible possibility.)
  5. Share your opinion of the forecast method selected – do you agree that it was appropriate? Why or why not?
Reflect on the legacy of the civil rights movement using the readings from Richie “How We Won the Mainstream but Lost the Movement

For this paper you will use the “Choosing an Issue checklist and the “Strategy Chart” (link to book is below) found in Bobo, Kendall and Max to analyze the Montgomery Bus Boycott. You will specifically be exploring the ways in which: the issue was chosen, the strategy developed, the tactics used. You may want to look at additional information on the bus boycott.

Once you complete your analysis, you will reflect on the legacy of the civil rights movement using the readings from Richie “How We Won the Mainstream but Lost the Movement” (article attached below please read it) and explore the ways in which systems advocacy, political advocacy/legislative reform and social service institutionalization impacted the Anti-violence movement.

Your paper should contain the following information using headings to label each of the four (4) items:

  • Part 1: Choosing an Issue
    • Application of the “Choosing an Issue” checklist (p. 27) – How was the issue chosen?
      • Address all items, with emphasis on the first three (see pages 9-10): Does it result in real improvement in people’s lives? Does it give people a sense of their own power? Does it alter power relationships?
  • Part 2: Strategy Chart & Tactics
    • Application of the “Strategy Chart” – In this narrative, describe how strategy was developed and what tactics were used.
  • Part 3: Leadership
    • How were leaders identified and recruited? What were their tasks?
  • Part 4: Personal Lessons Learned
    • Reflect on what you learned about maintaining the goals and ideals of a movement based on your Richie reading about the anti-violence movement (as a legacy of the civil rights movement) Reflect on the ways movements can be vulnerable to co-optation and what lessons/skills you want to take away (and remember) from the readings.
