Application: Child Observation Project: Part 3—Two Observations (approximately 45 minutes each)
As you are learning, assessing one area of development and learning at two points in time provides a limited view of overall development. On the other hand, the opportunity to practice observation skills provides a meaningful learning experience that reflects essential knowledge and skills that you will need as a early childhood professional.

This week, you will select two assessment methods and use one in each of the observations that you conduct.
To complete the assignment:

Plan

Take time to review the video segment, “Observation Guidelines” and reflect on the information and insights provided in this program and in your readings. Think about the value of observation, and how you envision using this information during the observations you conduct. 
Review pages 74–87 in your text, before you select the two assessment methods you plan to use during your observations Download, print out, and review the corresponding documents: 

Note: Use one assessment method in your first observation and the other in your second observation.

Review the Observation Plan that you developed in Week 2, in particular, the “examples of things to look for,” that you identified. Then, familiarize yourself with the specific assessment methods that you have selected. Think about how you will use each of the observations to identify examples of the child’s development and learning.
Make sure that you have all materials that you need to conduct the observations prior to arriving at the scheduled observation times.
Arrive on time. Ask the adult how the child’s day is going before you begin, keeping in mind that factors such as a child feeling tired, hungry, or upset can influence mood and behavior.

Implement

Choose a place to observe where you can see and hear the child but are beyond the child’s range of vision. As you observe, take notes on the observation procedure forms you selected and printed. 
Observe the child for approximately 45 minutes each time.
Keep the following guidelines in mind:

Keep your attention focused on the child.
Try to not make assumptions; objectivity is essential.
Remember that despite similarities shared by children of various ages, each child is unique and develops in his or her own way. 
Record what you observe.
Stick to the time span that you agreed to for the observations and be sure to thank the adult and child for their cooperation. 
Remember that this observation experience is intended as a chance for you to learn about and practice observation skills. Be careful not to express your views regarding the child’s growth and development.

Reflect on your observation. Review your notes and consider the knowledge and insights you gained from this experience. Consider the following:

Describe what you observed. Provide specific examples of how your observation data demonstrated information related to the area of development and learning in which you are focusing.
Think about the two different assessment methods that you used. Compare and contrast the two in terms of their strengths and limitations, specifically considering:

In my experience patient centeredness has always been an important aspect of healthcare. Melnyk and fineout-overholt (2018) define patient centeredness as the required integration of patient preferences and values into evidence-based decision making. With the modern technology available today, patients are more informed than ever and more capable than ever to be involved in the decision-making process. One experience that I recently encountered was a patient making decisions about end of life care. The patient was suffering from ALS, and initially elected to have life extending procedures performed. The patient stated a desire to see his daughter get married and wanted to live several more months in order to be present at the wedding. This was important to him, and to abide by the patients wishes, the patient was trached, placed on a ventilator, and received a PEG tube. After educating the family and setting up a home healthcare plan the patient was sent home. Several months later, the patient returned, and as previously indicated, wanted all care discontinued. Personally, I have been involved in multiple end of life scenarios where treatment is withdrawn, but this situation was different from most. The patient was to the point in his disease process where he had severe physical limitation, but was fully alert and able to communicate. It was a foregone conclusion that as soon as the ventilator was removed, the patient would not have the strength to take an effective breath, but the patient and family were clear they did not want to continue care given the patients quality of life. This was a difficult case to be a part of, but looking back, I believe all the correct decisions were made.
Effect of Patients Values
This scenario created multiple questions, that depending on individual values, had different answers. The first question is the appropriateness of artificially extending life in a disease that leads to such a poor quality of life. Second, many were uncomfortable on removing the source of oxygen on a patient whose life could be extended by keeping the ventilator. In the Ottawa Hospital decision aid tool (2019), one of the primary questions that it recommends the patient answer, is the consideration of personal goals still wanted to achieve. In this case the patient made it clear, he wanted to attend his daughter’s wedding that was several months away, and as the decision aid tool recommends, this is a good reason to extend one’s life. Everyone has different things they prioritize as important, and this was the most important event left for the patient to do. To accommodate the patient’s wishes, the treatment plan was modified to ensure the patient could accomplish this final goal.
Value of the Patient Decision Aid
Evidence based medicine combined with shared decision making are critical factors in the overall quality of the healthcare system (Hoffmann, Montori, & Mar, 2014). To provide quality care the patient must be informed of all options, as well as the risk and benefit of decision making. The decision aid tool is very effective in walking the patient through all considerations to making decisions. The tool also provides the necessary education to make an informed decision. This tool would be an excellent tool to prepare a patient for a discussion about plan of care. When a patient is not informed about their disease process, the patient has little opportunity to ask the right questions, or make an informed decision. Often, agreeing with the treating physicians plan of care is the only option the patient feels like they have.
Personal Use of Tool
Prior to this course I wasn’t aware that tools were available in the patient decision making process. Going forward, I would recommend this tool to anyone who is facing a new plan of care. A patient should be informed of treatment options prior to making the final decision. This ensures tool ensures that a patient understands the process, all the options, and the right questions to ask. Ultimately, this will help the patient make a fully informed decision about personal healthcare.

Current Trends
Current research on economic data has focused on both the business perspective to improve business actives. Gottfried et al. Business intelligence involves using internal and external sources to collect, analyze, and process information through software and fact-based systems to assist in decision making and strategy formulation with the end goal of a competitive advantage. Like Gottfried et al. (2021), Guan et al. (2022) utilized text mining to show that using open data resulted in a significant improvement in earnings per share. Where Guan et al. (2022) examined support by China in the use of open data, Huber et al.’s (2022) research found that countries that do not maintain an understanding of the implementation of rules supporting open data, contractual relationships and market exchanges did not see the same benefits of open data on entrepreneurship.
Current research on open data usage has also been conducted from the viewpoint of the consumer. Jones and Tonetti (2020) examined economic data in terms of property rights, who should own or regulate the data for its use, and the implications that may come to light. The study showed that while regulations can protect consumer privacy, it also limits the amount of data shared. Limiting data available can negatively impact in that data used can help diagnostics and lifesaving procedures (Jones & Tonetti, 2020). Jones and Tonetti (2020) also researched the idea of firms owning data which ultimately leads to the creation of barriers to entry in the market. Finally, Jones and Tonetti (2020) revealed that consumer choice of what data is collected and shared acts as a balancing mediator for data concerns in terms of consumer privacy and access to open data. Lee et al. (2023) proposed utilizing economic data of grocery shopping habits and trends as a way assess consumer creditworthiness to provide alternative lending options to low-income consumers. The study utilized tradition creditworthiness assessment and grocery data as a comparison (Lee et al., 2023). Lee et al. (2023) found that traditional means of assessment predicted lower-income consumers to be risker credit users while grocery data showed that lower-income consumers were less risky than higher-income consumers.
Future Research
Future research opportunities are suggested by Gottfried et al. (2021) to advance open-source intelligence through studying different types of techniques and integrating more dynamic data sources and combining topic models for predictive marketing models. Future research should also examine how sub-types of institutional quality affects specific entrepreneurial outcomes through the empirical study of country-level characteristics with experimental methodology (Huber et al., 2022) when using open data. Future studies are also recommended on open government data among different countries and their likelihood to use OGD (Gottfried et al., 2021; Guan et al., 2022).  Guan et al. (2022) suggests that their research be expanded to consider other performance measurements than earnings per share to further capture the benefits of using DPFs. Jones and Tonetti (2020) suggest that researchers examine the quantity of data available for use in various industries in terms of productivity advantage and the implications of consumer limited data. While generating possible alternative credit and leading determinants of creditworthiness, Lee et al. (2023) recommends research be conducted to evaluate the ethical decision making behind using grocery data as an approval to creditworthiness.
