The Allegory of the Orchard presents barriers and challenges of underserved, vulnerable, or marginalized populations and communities. These barriers and challenges highlight the importance of understanding the impact of political determinants of health on such groups. This allegory encourages an identification, understanding, analysis, and response to these factors as members of the healthcare community.

Welcome to SCI207! Throughout this course, you will be asked to keep a journal about your experience in the class. The purpose of this activity is to enable you to reflect on your learning: what new things you have discovered, what surprises you have encountered, what topics or ideas you have found particularly challenging, and how the course is going for you. During the five weeks in which you are participating in the Environmental Footprint Reduction Project, in Week 2 through Week 4 you will also use this journal as a space for a progress report on your efforts. Your entries will be evaluated in terms of how well they met the topic and length requirements, and your writing clarity. Your entries should be a minimum of one typed page each (double-spaced, Times New Roman, and 12-point font) and will be submitted through Waypoint.

What new things do you hope to learn in this course? What concerns or fears do you have about this class? What strategies to you plan to put in place to address them?

Maybe he or she made you feel that you mattered as an individual. Maybe you found the assignments to be engaging and enjoyable. It is likely that you have a variety of reasons for identifying that instructor as your favorite. It is also likely that those reasons describe several characteristics that deem your favorite instructor an effective instructor.  
For this Discussion, review and study this week’s Learning Resources. Search the Walden Library for article(s) on characteristics of effective college instructors and consider why these characteristics contribute to effectiveness. Next, select three of the characteristics researched in the article(s) that you feel are essential for effective psychology instruction. Then search the Walden Library for one article on strategies for developing the characteristics you selected. If you are unable to find an article that describes a strategy for your characteristics, then think of strategies that might be effective in developing those characteristics. Finally, reflect on whether an instructor can be effective without possessing the characteristics you selected.
