Discussion: Interventions for Survivors of Sexual Trauma
One in 6 females and one in 33 males have experienced some form of sexual trauma in their lives (RAINN, 2009). Many who seek treatment present with issues unrelated to sexual trauma. Given the high percentage of sexual trauma survivors, it is very likely that you will encounter clients with such a history during your career, regardless of your specialization. Therefore, it is important to familiarize yourself with a sexual trauma framework and skills specific to working with this population. While sexual trauma mostly occurs on an individual level, it also can have a significant impact on the family system. As a practitioner, you may intervene with the individual survivor, the parent(s) of a child who has been sexually abused, the spouse of a rape survivor, and/or the family system as a whole.
For this Discussion, select two types of sexual trauma from the readings this week and think about two interventions you might use for each and why.

The following headings will be included preparedness overview, enabling and guiding policies and legislation, the local, state, and federal government role, preparedness programs, steps and activities involving preparedness, and the concept of resiliency at the individual and community level. Intimate trauma involves one person’s intentional violation of another’s body. The impact of intimate trauma on the survivor is distinct from that experienced by those involved in collective traumas. Issues of traumatic sexualization, identity confusion, safety, and powerlessness, among others, abound in intimate—or sexual—trauma survivors. Layered responses to sexual trauma refer to those that are more visible, such as depression or PTSD, as well as others that may remain hidden, such as suicidal tendencies. Layered responses complicate the recovery process, demanding specialized skills and interventions specific to the needs of the sexual trauma survivor. These needs are influenced by the survivor’s gender, age, and culture. Appropriate interventions can have a positive impact on the quality of recovery for the client, while inappropriate interventions can have adverse effects, leading to potential legal and ethical issues. Thus, it is important that you are adequately trained and prepared to provide services to sexual trauma survivors.
