How will your own worldview inform your leadership approach in a way that enhances your sphere of influence in a diverse world?
Instructor’s Opening Post
The overarching course question is “how do the leader’s personal and social worlds interact?” We begin
our inquiry by exploring our personal worldview and how our worldview shapes our view of the world,
and how we act in it as a leader. Walsh and Middleton (1984) argue:
A world view is never merely a vision of life. It is always a vision for life as well. Indeed, a vision
of life, or world view, that does not actually lead a person or people in a particular way of life is
no world view at all. Our world view determines our values. It helps us interpret the world
around us. It sorts out what is important from what is not, what is of highest value from what is
least…
Why is being aware of one’s worldview as a leader important? One reason, is, as Roy Disney, observed
“It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.”
What is a worldview? Sire (2009) argues,
A worldview is a commitment, a fundamental orientation of the heart, that can be expressed as
a story or in a set of presuppositions (assumptions which may be true, partially true or entirely
false) that we hold (consciously or subconsciously, consistently or inconsistently) about the basic
constitution of reality, and that provides the foundation on which we live and move and have
our being. (p. 20)
How can leaders become more aware of their worldview and its influence on their leadership approach?
Valk et al. (2011) in their “Worldviews and Leadership” article write:
Worldview construction is complex. Nonetheless, the nature of leadership reveals that great
leaders take action in the world from a clear place: they are anchored in a particular view of the
world. Humans are meaning makers, and when leaders assist others in making sense of the
world through a clearly articulated and coherent worldview, solid action can follow. Thus, while
we need to be cognizant of the diversity of worldviews and the diversity of uses of the concept,
we also need to recognize that particular visions of life and ways of life can be powerful and
compelling. The challenge to leadership is to find ways to more explicitly map out these
worldviews, discerning those that tend to impede and restrict from those that seek to enhance
and expand the world we truly need or want.” (p. 61)
Drawing on your reading of Valk et al. (2011) and Sire (2009) answer the following questions:
1. In terms of Sire’s definition of worldview, what does it mean for you to “live and move and have
your being” as it relates to your worldview?
2. How will your own worldview inform your leadership approach in a way that enhances your
sphere of influence in a diverse world?

how would you apply your ideas regarding workplace attitudes that impact motivation?
Developing questions and hypotheses about workplace motivation is one of the most important steps to understanding and applying the theories of motivation in the workplace. This week, you will look more closely at this vital part of theory building and how you can go about developing quality application-focused ideas, questions, and hypotheses. First, provide an analysis of your own experience with workplace motivation through unsystematic and systematic observation and issues that can help you to develop sound research. Second, how would you apply your ideas regarding workplace attitudes that impact motivation?
Next, go the PG Library and find a scholarly research article on one of the theories discussed and relate it to a topic of interest regarding workplace motivation and attitudes. Briefly recap the study and provide your evaluation of how well the research adds value to the field of workplace motivation.

Chuck advertised his BMW car for sale at $200,000 cash. Charles came to accept the offer, but told Chuck he could only pay $100,000 cash and promised to pay the remaining $100,000 in two installments. Chuck said nothing.
Shortly after, Don came to view the car, and told Chuck that if he (Don) hears no more from Chuck by the next day, he will consider the car as his for $140,000. Again, Chuck remained silent.
Later that the evening, Eric came to view the car and told Chuck that $200,000 was “rather expensive”. He asked if Chuck would accept $120,000 cash. Chuck rejected this.
The next day, Fred came to view the car and after some discussion, agreed to Chuck’s price of $200,000. Chuck sold the BMW car to Fred for $200,000.
Charles, Don and Eric each believe they have a legally binding contract with Chuck, and as such are now contemplating legal action against him for “breach of contract”.

Question 6
Richard entered into negotiations with Jasmine, a property agent, for the purchase of a five-room re-sale flat in the Redhill area.
Richard told Jasmine that the flat he wished to purchase must be free of any adverse incident in its history. In other words, nothing terrible must have happened inside the flat. Richard explained that his wife was very superstitious over such matters.
Two weeks later, Jasmine chanced upon a seller of a five-room flat in the Redhill area who wished to sell his flat due to a murder that occurred in that flat when it was rented out to foreign workers. Believing that Richard would never know the truth behind the flat’s history, Jasmine took it upon herself to make false representations to Richard in an effort to get the flat sold to him and thereby earn her commission.
Jasmine then told Richard that she had found a flat for him. After viewing the flat, Richard again stipulated his condition that nothing out of the ordinary should have happened in the flat. Jasmine assured him that no such incident had occurred, stating that the current owners were selling the flat because they were emigrating to Australia.
After buying the flat and moving in, Richard’s neighbour told him that the former occupants of flat were two China nationals who were renting it while working in Singapore and that one day, during a drinking session, one killed the other in the flat. The previous owner, said the neighbour, felt that the flat carried a bad omen now and decided to sell it off. Adding further, the neighbour said he was surprised that Richard did not know this before buying the flat.
Required: Enraged, Richard now intends to rescind the contract. Discuss the grounds upon which the contract for the sale of flat could be rescinded.
How might you develop a tool of your own to measure not only effectiveness, but also to identify areas for growth?
Assignment: Course Project Parts 1 and 2: The Program and Evaluation Tool Planning
Just as the first step in solving a problem is to understand the problem, the first step in conducting an evaluation is to understand what you want to evaluate. (Giancola, 2014, p. 6)
As a leader in the field of education, you must constantly review program goals and initiatives, collect and analyze program-specific data, and refine strategies for the continuation of your programs to affect educational change. Thus far, you have honed some of these skills in your hypothetical role as a member of Mayor Keller’s task force in Grand City. You now have the opportunity to apply these skills to designing a program evaluation for your own educational setting. How will you approach understanding what you want to evaluate and enact data-informed change?
For this Assignment, you will develop Parts 1 and 2 of your Course Project. In Part 1: The Program, you will analyze a program in your specialization that is in need of evaluation and change; and in Part 2: Evaluation Tool Planning, you will outline an evaluation tool for the process.
Note: This Assignment has five parts and you will complete sections in subsequent modules. The final part will be due in Week 10, Module 5.
To prepare:
· Review the Fullan (2016) chapters in the Learning Resources. Consider how program evaluations fit within the process of continuation of educational change and the stakeholders who play a role in that continuation.
· Read the Giancola (2015) and Peurach, Glazer, & Winchell Lenhoff (2016) articles. Reflect on the purposes and various approaches of program evaluations and those elements that are inherent in any program evaluation. Reminder: The Giancola (2015) resource will serve as an essential guide for the completion of your Course Project. Be sure to read it for your work in this module, and refer to it often as you complete your Course Project.
· Consider a program within your specialization area that is in need of evaluation and change. Review any existing data regarding the program, and think about what the data may be telling you about the effectiveness of the program.
· Think about how you would plan for the evaluation of your selected program. What tools might you need to measure its effectiveness? How might you develop a tool of your own to measure not only effectiveness, but also to identify areas for growth?
· Using Giancola (2015) as a starting point, research a number of program evaluation tools and approaches. What quality indicators might you use to evaluate your selected program? What criteria will you use to evaluate the program based on those indicators?
· Review the Learning Resources from the Module 2 Discussion 2. What strategies might you consider employing to garner trust and buy-in from staff in conducting your program evaluation?
· Review and save a copy of the Walden APA Paper Template linked in the Learning Resources as well as other resources in the Writing Center.
