Discussion: Manifest Destiny and the Mexican War of 1846

Required Resources Read/review the following resources for this activity:

· Textbook: Chapter 8 (section 8.3), 11

· Lesson

· Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)

Initial Post Instructions For the initial post,  pick two (2) of the following historical events:

· The Lewis and Clark Expedition

· The Missouri Compromise

· Independence of Texas

· Mexican War of 1846-1848

· The California Gold Rush

Then, address the following for your selections:

· Which of your two selections do you consider most impactful on Westward Expansion during 1800-1848? Explain why.

· Analyze the effects of the ideology of Manifest Destiny on the two historical events that you chose from the list.

Follow-Up Posts Compare your selections and analysis of selections with those of your peers. If they chose different events, examine how yours are similar and/or different. If they chose the same events, build on their posts by providing additional information about the events that you have not already noted in your own post.

Writing Requirements

· Minimum of 2 posts (1 initial & 1 follow-up)

· APA format for in-text citations and list of references

Discuss way to improve the response to this type of incident in the future.

Search reputable local and national media for a man-made disaster to discuss.

Search for critical instances such as: hostage situations, mass shootings, multiple-vehicle or mass transit accidents with multiple critical injuries, and disease outbreaks.

(CHOOSE ONE) then describe the incident and address the following:

· Determine the incident type and explain your reasoning.

· What resources were deployed for this incident?

· What protocols were implemented successfully, and which were unsuccessful?

· Discuss way to improve the response to this type of incident in the future.

Support your answer with evidence. Please provide a working link to your story source.

How did the music make you feel? Why?

Choose one of the Week 2 listening examples, which are embedded in Chapter 2 “Early Western Art Music” of the course e-text and in the Week 2 Lesson. (Music from the Middle Ages or Renaissance only, no Dylan, Baez, or Cash, etc.) Be sure to include the title of the listening example in your answer. After listening, address these 6 questions:

After listening, address the following 6 questions:

  • How did the music make you feel? Why?
  • What was the mood of the music? Why do you say that?
  • How would you move your body to the music? Why did you choose that movement?
  • What facial expression would you associate with the music and why?
  • Did the music make you think of a specific person, place or thing?
  • What did you picture in your mind while listening? Why?

At the end of your response, include a paragraph describing two of the following musical elements of your chosen listening example: melody, harmony, timbre, texture, rhythm and form. Include an explanation of why you selected those terms to describe your chosen composition. Refer to Chapter 2 in the course text for a detailed explanation of these important musical terms. Your answer should reflect knowledge and understanding of the course materials, particularly as it relates to your chosen composition.

1) The best way to learn about a boxplot is to draw one by hand. Below is a set of contrived data and steps for finding the values you will need for this boxplot. I encourage you to check your boxplot with your calculator but don’t let this be your first step. (17 pts)

20 15 40 40 12 54 35 38 51 81 31 21 27 32 28 39 85 23 48 41 a) Use the 1Var Stats command in your TI-83/84 graphing calculator to find the 5-number summary.

(3 pts)

b) Calculate the fences for a modified boxplot. (To receive credit, you must write the formulas and the values you used.) (5 pts)

c) Are there any outliers? If so, what are they? (2 pts)

d) Draw a modified boxplot using an appropriate scale. (Be sure to label your scale as well as the outlier boundaries, each value from the 5-number summary, and any outliers. Your drawing should be much more specific than what your calculator will give you.) (7 pts)

Research evidence-based strategies for working collaboratively with colleagues when enacting change and for establishing buy-in from other professionals during the change process.

Discussion 2: Building a Collaborative Team

Collaboration leverages diverse perspectives and skills and can promote creativity and productivity. (Morel, 2014, p. 36)

As you review the contributions of your colleagues representing members of Mayor Keller’s task force in Module 2 Discussion 1, reflect on their perspectives and relevant data. Through this process, you will learn about the concerns of task force team members who have expertise in other educational specializations.

An essential element of change is collaboration among those working to initiate and implement that change. Taking in varying perspectives contributes to a fuller understanding of the issues facing Grand City and helps to address them more effectively. How might you build a collaborative team to promote creativity and productivity in the changes you are suggesting for your specialization and Grand City?

For this Discussion, you will develop a hypothetical, cross-specialization team to support you in initiating the changes you outlined in your action plan for this module’s Discussion 1.

To prepare:

· Read the Morel (2014) article on collaboration and review Chenoweth’s (2015) thoughts on collaboration and change. Consider the benefits of collaboration in an educator’s professional life. Reflect on the individuals you currently collaborate with inside and outside of your professional field. What specific strategies work well to keep this collaboration positive and forward moving?

· In the City Hall location in Grand City, revisit the task force’s opening meeting where individual members discuss their goals for change in Grand City.

· Read Chapter 3 in the Fullan (2016) text, and review the action plan you outlined for Module 2 Discussion 1. If you were a member of the task force representing your specialization area, and based on the factors that affect initiation in the resources, who would you select as a member of a cross-specialization team to initiate and implement your plans for change?

Note: The members of your hypothetical team may be represented by individuals already on the Grand City task force and/or representatives from a different specialization area in your own district or locale.

· Research evidence-based strategies for working collaboratively with colleagues when enacting change and for establishing buy-in from other professionals during the change process.

· Read the Marsh & Farrell (2015) and Sterett & Irizarry (2015) articles regarding data-driven decision making. Consider how you might work collaboratively with the members of your cross-specialization team to use the data to guide decisions to address the issues outlined in your action plan.

Assignment: Show all of your work. (15 points total) 1) Researchers continue to look for methods to measure how fast a car was traveling before an accident. Most

methods focus on the distance, d (in feet) required for an average car to completely stop while traveling at various speeds, s. Consider the table below.

a) Use the LinReg command in your graphing calculator and report the linear regression model for this data rounded to one decimal place. (Be sure to write the linear model as an equation and don’t forget to put a “hat” over the predicted variable.)

b) Identify and interpret the slope of the linear regression model you found in part (a).

c) Use the model to predict the braking distance for a car traveling 65 mph.

d) What is the observed braking distance for a car traveling 50 mph? What is the predicted distance for a car traveling 50 mph?

e) Find the residual for a car traveling 50 mph.

f) Interpret, in the context of the problem, the residual you found in part (d).
