Module 06 D – Bias in Healthcare
This paper is about ageism and bias. Reflect on your personal perception of older adults (aged 65 and above). Consider it is your first day at a clinical site, and your preceptor tells you that your client is a 76-year-old female. Does that paint a picture of your day? Do you have different expectations about the physical and cognitive abilities of a 76-year-old client than you would for a 46-year-old client? Do you anticipate having to provide more care for a 76-year-old than for a 46-year-old? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you are not alone.

In the readings for this learning module, you had the opportunity to explore the impact of what the authors described as extreme uncertainty. As you read this chapter you may have felt like there are very few businesses today that don’t deal with extreme uncertainty. While much of what the author addressed dealt with the issue of startups, almost every business deals with uncertainty. Describe how degrees of uncertainty impact an organization and articulate the steps that a leader can take to help an organization deal with this very real systemic constraint.

Discussion Question:
Obviously, time is one of those factors that is equal for everyone. However, in modern organizations we think about time differently, don’t we? Modern, asynchronous learning opportunities have allowed us to use our time differently. With that said, time crusher is a very real issue in most competitive organizations today. In your readings they address this issue. Describe in this discussion question how time pressures have an impact on organizations and how those pressures can be managed by thoughtful leaders desirous of managing their organizational culture. Be specific and articulate examples from the readings.

Many Oreo consumers follow the “Twist, Lick, and Dunk” practice, which is an example of a food ritual. What other food categories or brands have rituals associated with them? One study found that these food rituals may actually enhance our enjoyment of the food we eat. Mondel?z, the maker of Oreos, has invested heavily in promotional activity designed to help us remember how to eat its cookie, including TV and social media ads.
CS 14-1. What other food categories or brands have rituals associated with them? If you are a participant in one or more of those rituals, do you agree with the study referenced above that this ritual increases your enjoyment of the food?
CS 14-2. Choose a food brand without an apparent ritual and come up with one that could be used in a promotional activity. (No dunking allowed.)
CS 14-3. How could Oreo assess the impact of the twist, lick, and dunk ritual? Create a simple experiment that could provide Oreo marketers with data to judge the role that the ritual plays in some marketing metric of interest (e.g., brand loyalty, likely increased frequency of purchase, or differentiation from competitive offerings).
