Examining the History and Aims of Science
Philosophy
Level 6 Philosophy dissertation. Standard dissertation structure. Want to keep it simple and straightforward, focusing on scientifically advanced civilisations and cultures throughout history, as well as major periods of scientific advancement. So mainly Ancient Greece and China, Galileo/Copernicus, The Enlightenment Period, and Modern (20th/21st Century) science. Focusing on significant technologies and medicines from the times, discussing their purposes, merit, reasons for coming about, and potential motivating factors e.g. economic or social or both. Also, it should consider if there is a universal driving force behind the pursuit of science as a species and/or civilisation, or instead if there are a variety of different reasons for pursuing scientific advancement. With this we may be able to notice a pattern or trend that makes science more understandable and relatable in some way for everyone that encounters and experiences it in everyday life.

TASK:
Find and select a data set for a de-identified student whom you will teach during your practical placement. You should collect and consider primary sources, eg student work, and secondary sources such as test results, observations, on-entry assessments, teacher notes, reports, visual diaries: a wide range of data that is appropriate and relevant to the context and phase of learning.
Analyse the data provided and consider what educational responses are required in order to impact upon the student’s learning.
Design an individual learning plan and present it in the form of a report (headings can be used). Your report will contain:
a clear learner profile;
key data considered and why;
how the data has been interpreted and the learning implications of that interpretation;
your proposed plan for the student, and what evidence of learning you will gather.
You must show how your plan has been derived from your readings and research to be educationally sound. Use APA 7th edition referencing conventions.
When you have completed your report, it must be viewed by your school experience mentor teacher or supervisor and their feedback included in your submission (you are responsible for recording and writing up the feedback). [Please note this is optional, it may be difficult to fulfil this requirement given time constraints]
Feedback must comment on:
quality of data source/s used;
interpretation of the data;
how well your learning plan addresses identified needs.
What you will submit:
Your report with key headings
font: arial 11pt or Times New Roman 12pt with double line spacing throughout
standard word doc margins with a document footer: A2 Report (your surname and student ID)
One APA 7th edition Reference list
Appendices – Please include a summary table as shown in the exemplar
Name your submission as follows: Surname_first name_Student ID_Unit code_A1_SP and year
Provide An explanation of the 3 applicable models, strategies to use, and the cost benefit of each model
Management
You have been given the task of increasing the workforce in the organizational development (OD) department. Part of this task is the onboarding process and the standardization of the methods and processes that are used to intervene when it is appropriate and necessary. One of the first things you will need to do is go back and refresh yourself about all of the possible models, strategies, and specific steps that would make sense in this environment and in the current business situation of the company. Determine the estimated cost of the onboarding process. What are cost-effective ways to build an onboarding program that prepares employees for their new work experiences and prepares them for embracing change? The people are used to change, and there is not much resistance with change efforts as long as the people understand what it is, why it is being done, and how they fit into the change. Your vice president (VP) has asked for you to give her a proposal on what your actions will be to become successful in this new role with this high-level task.
Your proposal must include the following:
An explanation of the 3 applicable models, strategies to use, and the cost benefit of each model
Definitions of these models and strategies (taking caution to use the proper terminology)
A cost comparison of the potential improvements your client could expect by using the models and strategies that you are recommending
An explanation of at least 5 specific recommended steps that can be taken in the present situation described by creating a pros and cons analysis, objectively reviewing each item in the recommendation
A brief outline of an action plan that could serve as a template for future action plans, including who in the organization would be responsible, how long it would take to implement each item, and the potential cost for each
Write a 2000-word methodological report in which you justify, apply and critically evaluate one of the data analysis techniques you have learned on the module.
Business
Summative Assessment
Methodological Report – 2000 Word Limit
The Research Methods module has now outlined different approaches to data analysis, including a range of methods or techniques used by academics and practitioners when conducting business research. We have learnt that there are different choices to make in research and that the suitability of our analytical techniques is determined by our assumptions and the current state of knowledge around our research question. We have also learnt that no data is perfect, and all methodologies and methods have merits and limitations.
In this assignment you are required to demonstrate your understanding of the appropriateness and suitability of data analysis techniques, by justifying, applying and critically evaluating one of the data analysis techniques you have learned on the module to a given research topic and data set (see below).
Your work should be fully referenced, using appropriate literature sources, drawing from module materials and core readings, and supplemented by your own wider reading.
In completing your report, you should:
- Use data from an approved source (i.e. the tutor designated transcripts or dataset)
- Show evidence of the application of your technique to reach your preliminary results or findings
- Critically review the relevance or suitability of the technique to the research question
Further guidance will be supplied to students on their specified question and data set according to their subject specialist pathway. Students were allocated to their pathway at the beginning of term according to their degree programme:
Advanced Quantitative Methods
- MSc Accounting and Financial Management
- MSc Management with Business Finance
Mixed Methods
- MSc Global Marketing
- MSc International Business
- MSc International Business and Strategic Management
- MSc International Strategic Management
- MSc Management
- MSc Corporate Sustainability with Environmental Management
Please note students are not permitted to choose a different pathway for the assessment and must address the question for their allocated pathway.
Data Set
Students following the Mixed Methods pathway will be given a sample set of interview transcripts and related survey data related to diversification of a local business. Your overall research question will be set by your tutor, but you have some scope to focus this further in accordance with your chosen method and data analysis technique.
Students following the Advanced Quantitative Methods pathway will be given a sample time series data set related to stock market performance. Your overall research question will be set by your tutor, but you have some scope to focus this further in accordance with your chosen company and data analysis technique.
ASSIGNMENT TASK
Write a 2000-word methodological report in which you justify, apply and critically evaluate one of the data analysis techniques you have learned on the module.
Suggested structure:

Introduction (approx. 200 words)
In your introduction you should describe the approach you are taking to the research question, including any initial assumptions or decisions.
Main body (approx. 800 words)
In this section you should justify your data analysis technique and show evidence of your application of this technique to the data. You may wish to include;
Guide to Methods

Lab: Thermal Energy and Friction
Introduction
The mechanical energy of a mass is the sum of the kinetic energy that the mass has because of
its motion, and the potential energy it has because of its location. When friction acts on a mass,
the friction takes away mechanical energy. We can imagine that the energy is still there – in the
motion of the atoms of the environment and the mass itself. But this energy is no longer readily
available to do work. We can only detect this energy by a rise in temperature. That is why the
energy friction “steals” is often called thermal energy.
In this lab you will look at a simulated motion – a ball rolling on a parabolic track. You will
investigate how much thermal energy is removed by friction as the ball rolls on the track.
