A Conservative Era, 1970s-1990s

13 – A Conservative Era, 1970s-1990s

1. Explain an example from one of the assigned primary sources that demonstrates the involvement of the Nixon administration in the Watergate scandal.

2. Explain an example from one of the assigned primary sources that demonstrates the efforts of either the feminist or gay rights movements of the 1970s-1980s.

3. Explain an example from one of the assigned primary sources that demonstrates the conservative political outlook of New Right movement and/or the Reagan administration.

4. Explain an example from one of the assigned primary sources that demonstrates a cultural, economic, political, or foreign policy development between 1988 and 2000.

5. Energy consumption and international politics contributed to the long energy crisis of the 1970s, including the OPEC embargo of 1973-1974. During the 1970s, the United States struggled to deal with fuel shortages and enactment of effective energy policies. Drawing from The American Promise and the supplementary primary sources assigned in this module, what examples illustrate the energy-related challenges the United States faced during the 1970s? What examples demonstrate the efforts that President Jimmy Carter attempted to put into effect?

6. During the early 1970s the Nixon administration undertook a new era of Cold War diplomacy known as detente, which is described in The American Promise. It was an attempt to dampen tensions between the United States and two main Cold War adversaries, the Soviet Union and China. This period of detente was brief, as the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 led to a reinvigoration of Cold War tensions during the Carter administration, as is explained in chapter 29 of The American Promise. When Ronald Reagan campaigned for the presidency in 1980, he characterized Carter as a weak leader, unable even to free American hostages in Iran. He pledged “Peace through Strength” and determined to reassert the United States’ military influence throughout the world—particularly as a rebuttal to the Soviet Union, which he dubbed “an evil empire.” Referring to The American Promise and the assigned primary source evidence, what examples demonstrate the Reagan administration’s perspective on foreign policy? The Reagan administration also engaged in secret dealings that became known as the Iran-Contra scandal, described in chapter 30 of The American Promise. Drawing on The American Promise and the supplementary primary sources, what were the major issues at the heart of this controversy?

Please note: Answer each of the questions. Each answer is worth an equal fraction of 100 points. (For example, when there are four prompts each answer is worth 25 points; when there are five prompts each answer is worth 20 points.) To receive credit, answers must provide full and coherent explanations. Before submitting your assessment, also be certain that your responses are free from spelling and grammatical errors. Submissions that are filled with such errors will not receive full credit. Finally, answers that do not explain examples from the assigned primary sources when required will not receive credit.

Reminder: It is not necessary to read each of the following supplementary primary sources. They are intended to supplement the other assigned primary sources. It is appropriate to utilize the supplementary primary sources in this module’s assignments.

Assess this statement: ‘If you think like a realist…. you’ll understand why China’s rise is a critical event and likely to be a source of conflict with the United States (and others).’ (Walt, Stephen, “The World Wants you to Think Like a Realist,” Foreign Policy, May 30, 2018

Referencing: Chicago 16 Footnote style

Content and structure:

The essay should examine Walt’s statement through the lens of realism, and more specifically through prominent subgroups of realism. In order to reflect that whichever type of realist one might be, China’s rise is a critical event. Whether it is likely to be a source of conflict with the United States and others depends on which subgroup of realism one aligns with.

The first section of the essay should cover the following subgroups of realism:

– Classical realism.
– Defensive structural realism.
– Offensive structural realism.
– Neoclassical realism.
– Rise and fall realism.

The second section of the essay should explore China’s Grand Strategy and how the pathway towards achieving their strategic objectives might be a source of conflict as well as of increased security competition with the United States and others.

The third section should briefly highlight how the competition between China and the U.S. would reinforce the security dilemma, a term coined by John Herz.

The final section will be the conclusion.

Focus on one determinant of health, critically explore this determinant in terms of the individual as well as the wider socio-political and economic context.

Focus on one determinant of health, critically explore this determinant in terms of the individual as well as the wider socio-political and economic context. Current evidence and policies in relation to the social determinant and its potential impact or relationship to the individual in the case study should be utilised to support this work. ( Main determinant of health taught in class – 1) Social determinant comprises of housing, unemployment, environment, cultural belief, lifestyle, food. 2) Biological/physical health comprises of ill health. 3) Geopolitical. NOTE- whatever determinant you choose to write on you have to link it to how people can be prone to ill health/health issues 2) you can talk about impact / solution or the both. 3) follow your argument probably. 4) everything should be linked to the case scenario.

THE INFLUENCE OF HEALTH AND SAFETY LAWS ON THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OUTCOMES OF CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS IN THE UK FROM PROJECT MANAGERS’ VIEWPOINT

Assessor’s Feedback

The background of the study is good, a proper introduction for the research subject, clear with good referencing and citations. The rationale needs to focus on the statement of the research problem. Even though it is well written, it should clearly state the problem this research is focusing on.

The aim is very well written and provides a good idea of what is expected from the research deliverables. The objectives could be improved since the aim is to establish the influence of construction policies, it might be helpful to explain the process through the objectives.

The literature review is well written with good identification and explanation of the main terms used in this research. Section 2.4 the gaps could benefit from some additional citations and references.

The research methodology is good, could benefit from a rationale of choice that better explain the research methods adopted.

Overall the report is well written and a good start to the research project.

Similarity report 28% – no evidence of plagiarised content.

Evolutionary response to climate change

For this assignment, you are to write a review paper on some aspect of evolutionary biology. The paper itself should be no more than 10 pages, typed, double-spaced. It should include the appropriate references. the majority of your sources should be primary, research articles from peer- reviewed publications. Your references should cover the topic completely.

What do you know / not know about Australian culture and history?

500 Words Part 1
Reflecting on a Way of Being: Anchor Principles of Cultural Competence’ (Russell, 2020), reflect on your positioning using the following prompts:
What do you know / not know about Indigenous Australian peoples and communities?
Where and/or from whom did that knowledge come?
What do you know / not know about Australian culture and history?
Can you identify any limitations to what you know?
Drawing on your reflection on the previous questions, consider which ‘anchor principles’ (Social Justice, Knowing Self, Re-storying, Action) you most identify with. How do these principles relate to your understanding of your own positioning?

Part 2 (300 words):
Locate a media article that relates to Indigenous peoples, knowledges or cultures and aligns with your current interests or understandings – provide a link to the article as your heading (some articles will be provided in the subject site as examples).

The media is an example of a powerful institution which shapes our knowledge. Incorporate these prompt questions into a synthesised reflection:
Thinking about your knowledge of Australian history, does the author provide all the information required to understand the issue being discussed? What information is missing?
Is there a presumption that readers already hold views about Indigenous peoples? What are the taken-for-granted assumptions?
What would a reader infer about the relationship between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous peoples based on the text of the article? How are Indigenous and non-Indigenous people positioned in the article? (e.g., is there a social or cultural norm evident? Are Indigenous peoples constructed as different to or divergent from the norm?)
Is there an Indigenous viewpoint included in the article? If yes, how does the author use Indigenous perspectives to support or contradict the main message? If no, how could this influence a readers’ perception of Indigenous people and of the main message in the article?
Russell G. (2020). Reflecting on a Way of Being: Anchor Principles of Cultural Competence. In J. Frawley, G. Russell & J. Sherwood (Eds.), Cultural Competence and the Higher Education Sector (pp. 31-42).

Provide a summary of the research problem, paradigm used, context, questions and methodology employed in the article. This summary must be developed under the following two major sub-headings:

SUMMARY (approx. 1100 words). Provide a summary of the research problem, paradigm used, context, questions and methodology employed in the article. This summary must be developed under the following two major sub-headings:

Paradigm assumptions evident in the article: describe the paradigm and associated guiding assumptions underpinning the research reported in the article. Some authors may not state their assumptions clearly, so you may have to infer them from the approach and methods adopted in the research.
Summary of research approaches taken in the article:
summarise the general research problem, its context, the research questions and/or hypotheses in the article.
summarise the methods and procedures employed in the article, including the research design, sampling issues, measurement processes and data analyses.
summarise the general conclusions of the article.
It is useful to use a highlighter on the printed copy of the article to mark those aspects of the story that will inform your summary. Making notes on the margins of the article will help you map the highlighted points to the components of the report.

CRITIQUE (approx. 1100 words). Critically evaluate the article with respect to how convinced you were by the authors’ conclusions given the methodological approach and the data used. Consider all aspects of the methodology, e.g., design, instruments, procedures, sampling issues, and consistency with the chosen paradigm.

Indicate your overall view of the quality of the study giving clear reasons for your judgment. Address the following two areas:

What you think the authors did well in their research and why.
What you think the authors could have done better in their research and why.
Be sure to clearly show the logic and reasoning behind your critical evaluation.
