Write concisely and clearly, using connected prose.
Read the target article, then answer the questions within the word limit given for each question. • Write concisely and clearly, using connected prose. Do not use bullet points within a question. • In your answer, focus on the important aspects and do not include irrelevant details. Do not exceed the word limit given for each question. • Your answer should demonstrate your understanding. Your answers should be in your own words, not a verbatim copy of the text. • Do not use abbreviations unless it is well-established in the literature (e.g., ANOVA). If it is a technical term, and it is not abbreviated in the article, do not use abbreviations. • There is no need to give a References list. • Do not copy and paste the questions (as this will inflate the Turnitin similarity score); just mark each answer as Q1, Q2, etc. For Q1, mark each answer (a), (b), etc. • Please note that the assignment questions are similar to the assignments from previous years, but the target article, and hence the answers, are different. Make sure you have read the right target article. • Title page is not required. • To submit, upload a single document with your name and student ID at the top of the page via the Turnitin assignment portal under Assessment tasks/Assignment in the iLearn unit homepage. Target article
Thorn, A. S.C., & Gathercole, S.E. (2001). Language differences in verbal short-term memory
do not exclusively originate in the process of subvocal rehearsal. Psychonomic Bulletin &
Review, 8 (2), 357-364.
Link to the e-reserve at MQ Library (if the link doesn’t work, get to the article via the
Leganto reading list) Thorn & Gathercole (2001) investigated the first language advantage found with bilinguals
in immediate serial recall. Answer the following 5 questions relating to this article. Q1
requires a single word or a phrase; for Q2-5, your answer should be a couple of sentences
(not bullet points) within the word limit given for each question. Your answer should be
expressed succinctly in your own words, and not a verbatim copy of the text.
Questions
1. Background to this research. Complete the blank space with a word or a phrase (5
marks, each answer is worth 1 mark).
Within a language, memory span (immediate serial recall) is consistently found
to be superior for short as compared with long words; this is called the word
length effect. In the phonological loop component of Baddeley’s (1986) working
memory model, the word length effect is explained in terms of a rehearsal
mechanism that serves to refresh decaying representations held in a
phonological short-term store: Words that take longer to produce are rehearsed
more slowly, resulting in an increased chance of loss from the phonological store
through trace decay.
Previous studies have consistently found cross-language variation in digit span,
with greater span found in languages such as Chinese than English. This crosslanguage variation is thought to arise from the difference in __ (a) ___, with
languages such as Chinese, in which digit names are short, are thought to permit
faster __ (b) ____, resulting in better recall performance.
2
Language differences in short-term memory performance have also been
demonstrated within bilingual individuals. Ellis & Henneley (1980) showed that
Welsh-English bilinguals had superior digit span in English, the language with the
__ (c)__ digit names than Welsh, and attributed the results to the difference in
the ___ (d) ____. Here, Thorn and Gathercole (2001) suggest an alternative
possibility that the English language advantage in digit span in bilinguals could in
part be due to a difference in __ (e) ___ . The superior recall in the language the
bilingual individual is more familiar with is referred to as a first language
advantage.
2. What is the research hypothesis investigated in this study (i.e., what was the study
designed to investigate), and the outcome that is expected from the authors’
proposal regarding the origins of the first language advantage? (4 marks, limit 100
words)
3. Summarize the Method of Experiment 2. Your answer must include: a) participant
characteristics, b) stimulus characteristics, how they were presented, and what the
participants were asked to do with them, c) the dependent variable used to measure
the verbal short term memory capacity, and d) the two independent variables (IV)
and the levels (conditions) within each IVs, making clear how they were manipulated
(within-subjects or between-subjects). (4 marks, limit 120 words).
4. Summarize in a sentence the critical pattern of results of Experiment 2 shown in
Table 2. (3 marks, limit 30 words)
5. Describe the explanation of the first language advantage put forward by Thorn &
Gathercole (2001) which draws a link to the two variables known to enhance short
term memory recall within a language. (4 marks, limit 130 words)

exploration on the effects of academic self-efficacy and perfectionism on academic procrastination Quantitative study Latest revision
A cross-cultural (cross-national) exploration on the effects of academic self-efficacy and perfectionism on academic procrastination Quantitative study Latest revision comment [March 23, 2022 13:04] Please, work in the file “3.20_841653_latest.docx” and amend: 1) Research rationale is virtually non existent, you second sentence states the issue of limited research, but there are no prior claims to back it up – you need to first briefly review the overall issues, state the main problem, explain how you will address it However, limited academic investigations explore the relevant variables among students studying in the Romanian and U.K. universities. The rationale of the current investigations aims to address the appropriate limitations in the existing literature. – what limitations? 2) Aims and first RO are the same There are no hypotheses 3) Check the brief – Hypothesis, Aims, and Objectives, which should be clearly stated. and the final paragraph in this section will usually consist of an outline of your design based on a stated rationale derived from the theories and findings previously discussed. 4) LR is not structured – there should be headings that define main themes within past literature It is also not critical at all – see the brief: You should then compare and contrast findings and different theories to show how you have decided (your rationale) on your design and your predictions. 5) Conclusion in LR is not really needed, it is also written as if the research ahs already been conducted while it is only 1 chapter of the work 6) Elaborate on research gap Numerous studies have been conducted to establish the existing connections between procrastination, selfefficacy, and perfectionism within students in the tertiary institutions. However, there is a significant gap in research on the relations between the latter variables among students in U.K. and Romanian universities 7) Check the file Reporting guidelines – adhere to the outline for Method – you may keep philosophy – approach, but the rest should be reorganised 8) Check for inconsistencies/missing info in Method The quantitative study was conducted using the pessimism research philosophy – ? The positivism research philosophy perceives the researcher as an objective analyst, anticipated to distance themselves from individual values throughout the investigations – keep this Woiceshyn & Daellenbach (2018) explains that the deductive process involves the development of hypotheses or hypothesis based on the prevailing theories – there are no hypotheses in the work Research Strategy – this section is not really needed How many people participated in the study? Limitations basically say that your research is no valid, you critique the whole method picked – why was it chosen in the first place then? > same in Conclusion 9) Results as such seem to be missing – there is demographic data (age and gender) but what about the actual findings? There is one figure that seems to relate to the collected data but its analysis is non existent Generally, the outcomes of the study as evidenced in the chart above indicate higher levels of procrastination in the U.K. than in Romania. However, there was a small significance of procrastination, especially for self-critical perfectionism. – is that it? 10) Discussion should compare own findings to those of other authors previously cited in the paper – this is also absent, the chapter is general You will also need to adjust the above chapter as Results should be rewritten 11) Rewrite limitations in Conclusion (as per point 8) 12) Wordcount is not met, Abstract is missing
Consider how changes in linguistic methods and tools, as well as theoretical and analytical models have helped to develop the field. What new trends appear to be emerging and what is this in response to?
The field of Forensic Linguistics has developed significantly since the early work of Jan Svartvik in 1968. Describe and critically discuss changes in research endeavours (/questions), approaches and methods over the past twenty years or so. Focus either on the analysis of spoken or written texts (e.g. ransom notes; text messages). Consider how changes in linguistic methods and tools, as well as theoretical and analytical models have helped to develop the field. What new trends appear to be emerging and what is this in response to? I am attaching some sources. Use some or all depending on whether you think they are appropriate. Focus only on ONE between written or spoken texts. Sources have to be both case studies (empirical studies) and generic texts about forensic linguistics. The essay will need subsections (such as Introduction, maybe Early developments etc etc and a Conclusion, of course). Two of the sources are in Russian but I have attached a (badly) translated version from Google translate. If you decide not to use it, it is ok. I would need a total of 25 sources. You can use other sources as well that I have not attached. To access some of the source you may need my university login which I am happy to provide.

estimate the excess returns on a stock of your choice applying the Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT)
Task: to estimate the excess returns on a stock of your choice applying the Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT). Aim: to evaluate your understanding of financial theory to transform data into correct form, to model financial relationships and correctly interpret the findings. The analysis of the results is the most important stage of the assignment. It involves estimating an initial model or models, performing appropriate diagnostic tests, re-forming and re-estimating, and conducting tests of hypothesis. Format: The assignment consists of three parts comprising a written report of a maximum of 1,500 words. A pdf format of the report, including the EViews output in an Appendix, to be uploaded via My Studies. Presentation instructions: 1. Do not just cut and paste EViews output into your coursework, create your own tables to fit your needs. However, all estimation results (from EViews) must be collected in an Appendix and clearly referenced in the text (i.e., referring to a table or a graph number in the Appendix). 2. You should consider including a comparative table of results (in terms of different variables). 3. PLEASE tabulate your results in the main draft, simply cutting and pasting EViews output is not acceptable. 4. No marks will be awarded for output results without explanations. 5. Appropriate notation: numbers should be reported with up to 3 decimal points; use Word equation editor if typing formulas; use uniform reference formatting (e.g., Chicago); use at least font size 11. 6. Do all hypothesis tests properly. For instance, the way you report the significance of a coefficient reveals how well you understand hypothesis testing. Specific instructions on performing the task: PART 1: (25 marks) 1. Carefully explain the APT, outlining the mathematical model, underpinning it, appropriately referenced. [8 marks] 2. Discuss, with reference to an empirical study, the applicability of APT for estimating excess stock returns. Please note that there are no limitations on the year of the FN585: Financial Modelling and Dealing 2 publication. It can be a more recent study or a seminal work, but not the example discussed in class. [8 marks] 3. Briefly, provide a background information on your chosen company. [2 marks] 4. Present and explain the model you will be estimating based on the APT, in the context of your data. Your model should be of the form: Yt = + β1X1t + β2X2t + ut ut ~ N (0, σ2 ) [7 marks] PART 2: (30 marks) 1. Collect monthly data, for a five-year period, with reference to the relevant sources, on: a) the prices for your chosen stock b) the corresponding market index prices c) the relevant risk-free asset returns d) a macroeconomic indicator of your choice Relevant data is available from: Yahoo Finance, FRED (The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis), Kenneth R. French Data Library, IMF, and the World Bank. [6 marks] 2. Compile an Excel worksheet and import the data into EViews. [1 mark] 3. Make the necessary data transformations. [10 marks] 4. Test the variables for unit-root; carefully formulate the hypothesis and make a correction, if possible. [6 marks] 5. Investigate the variables included in your model. Present in a table and briefly interpret the respective summary statistics. Include two scatter plots of relevant variables. [7 marks] PART 3: (35 marks) 1. Estimate the model and test if it conforms to three of the classical OLS assumptions for the residuals: homoscedasticity; no series correlation and normality. You are required to make any corrections that are possible. [10 marks] 2. Carefully specify the hypotheses for testing the assumptions on the residuals, the individual coefficients and the F-test for overall significance. [8 marks] FN585: Financial Modelling and Dealing 3 3. Correctly interpret the estimated coefficients in terms of their signs, significance and impact on the dependent variable. [6 marks] 4. Correctly interpret the R2 and the F-statistic. [6 marks] 5. Briefly compare your findings with the article surveyed in Part 1. [5 marks] Structure: The three parts, with the detailed instructions, should provide the structure of your report. [2 marks] Presentation: as per presentation instructions on p.1 of this brief [5 marks] Referencing: Use uniform reference formatting (e.g., Chicago or Harvard) – please see the Brighton Business School Referencing Handbook for detailed guidance.
