Racism: Past and Present

To Prepare

Review the assigned essays from the text by Adams et al.
Review the Required Media—the podcast and the video—in the Learning Resources this week.
Research and select a historical event—older than 5 years—as it relates to racism. This can be any event you believe is important in understanding racism in the U.S.
Research and select a current event—within the past 12 months—as it relates to racism. This can be any event you believe is important in understanding racism in the U.S.
Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

Describe the historical event and how it exposes racism, either overtly or through more subtle actions due to the systemic nature of the problem. Please include the following in your description:

Overview of the event, including the general time period, inciting incident, and parties involved.
Outcome of the event, including any major social or political changes as a result.

Describe the current event and how it exposes racism, either overtly or through more subtle actions due to the systemic nature of the problem. Please include the following in your description:

Overview of the event, including the time period, inciting incident, and parties involved.
Outcome of the event, including any major social or political changes as a result (if there is no immediate outcome, share possible or proposed outcomes).
Connection to social work, either through its impact on ongoing research in the field or on the treatment of populations.
Then, compare the two events. Consider the following to help guide your comparison:

How were the causes of the two events similar?
How were the causes of the two events different?
Did the outcome of the historical event have any positive impacts on the response to the current event? If not, explain how the systemic nature of racism may have played a role in this lack of progress.
How have both events impacted social work? Explain how the profession may have responded differently in each time period.
How would you rate U.S. social and political progress toward addressing systemic racism based on these two events?

Describe how the data was gathered and analyzed. What research questions or hypotheses were the researcher trying to explore? What statistical analysis was used?

You will review quantitative research. The topic is up to you as long as you choose a peer-reviewed, academic research piece. There are no hard word counts or page requirements as long as you cover the basic guidelines. You must submit original work, however, and a paper that returns as a large percentage of copy/paste to other sources will not be accepted. (Safe Assign will be used to track/monitor your submission for plagiarism.)

Please use APA formatting and include the following information:

Introduction/Background: Provide context for the research article. What led the author(s) to write the piece? What key concepts were explored? Were there weaknesses in prior research that led the author to the current hypothesis or research question?

Methodology: Describe how the data was gathered and analyzed. What research questions or hypotheses were the researcher trying to explore? What statistical analysis was used?

Study Findings and Results: What were the major findings from the study? Were there any limitations?

Conclusions: Evaluate the article in terms of significance, research methods, readability and the implications of the results. Does the piece lead into further study? Are there different methods you would have chosen based on what you read? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article in terms of statistical analysis and application?

give an account of whether we should accept the account of Locke and Schechtman, or that of Hume and Giles.

Where Locke and Schechtman hold the view that we are a succession of experiences organized by a consciousness, Hume took what we understand to be an Eastern approach. One of the central ideas of Buddhism is the pursuit of ‘self-negation’. By ‘negating’ or eliminating the need for one’s differentiation from other entities in the world, a person is able to eliminate material desire; and, thus attachment to the material world. This idea of self-negation is meant in the mystical sense, where the ultimate purpose of self-negation is the joining of one with Brahman (Approximately, this is the spirit of the Universe. See the SEP article on Religious Experience for more information.)

In this article James Giles attempts to advance the position Hume by relating to subjective phenomena regarding an individual’s psychological and emotional states. The footnotes in this assigned reading are particularly useful.

Prompt: Explain Giles position in this article and how he makes the case for a theory of personal identity that can epistemologically (how we might have knowledge of) account how our subjective experiences, if we are not ourselves constituted as a ‘bundle of ever-changing elements’. Second, give an account of whether we should accept the account of Locke and Schechtman, or that of Hume and Giles. Provide a reasoned opinion to your decision.

Required Reading: Reading 14: James Giles, “The Non-Self Theory: Hume, Buddhism, and Personal Identity” (PDF); David Hume – Of Personal Identity (Weblink)

Recommended: SEP, “Religious Experience” – Section 4, “The Diverse Objects of Religious Experience”

Remember: A response consists of more than one word or simply agreeing. Please cite all passages in the text (including page number) and cite all outside information according to MLA guidelines. Your answer should have AT LEAST 3 responses (possibly more), aside from your original post. You will always be required to create a post responding to the discussion prompt (300-600 words), before viewing any responses of other students. Please review your work carefully before you submit since you will not be allowed to edit it afterwards (i.e., type and edit your responses in a WordDoc before posting.) Additionally, each discussion board requires you to respond to at least three other students (50-100 words per response)

Identify who or what contributed to the development of the theory. Were there key researchers or seminal research that led to the theory?

When you have a strong grasp of the basic tenets, strengths, and weaknesses of key theories of psychology, you can make an informed decision as to which theory or theories best apply in understanding a particular set of behaviors. By keeping a journal of sorts, you can document the characteristics of each theory as you learn about it. Your journaling will be a useful reference for you long after you complete this course. The Psychology Theories Template provides a matrix where you can record what you have learned about each theory.

For this Assignment, you will explore key concepts found in psychodynamic theories and begin your journaling of this week’s theories.

To complete
Begin populating the Psychology Theories Template related to this week’s theories—psychodynamic theories. As you begin populating your template, consider the following:

Identify who or what contributed to the development of the theory. Were there key researchers or seminal research that led to the theory?
Record whether the theory emphasizes nature (biology), nurture (environment), or both.
List the primary characteristics or features of the theory (its key tenets and concepts). Be sure to include if a particular period of life is emphasized.
List the noteworthy strengths and weaknesses of the theory.
(Optional) Include any notes that you find helpful in understanding and applying the theory, such as potential contemporary themes or fields of research in which the theory could be applied

What is intellectual property? Give at least 5 examples.

This week we will explore intellectual property. Most people do not know what intellectual property is, yet it is extremely important. Intellectual property is not specific to large corporations. Rather, individuals can also generate intellectual property. We also explore challenges of new technologies and how they affect copyright laws.

Pick a topic below and post your reply by Wednesday at midnight. Your response should be at least 400 words and appropriately cites your resources.

Respond to two of your classmates by Sunday at midnight. Your responses should be at least 200 words and should be substantive. You should offer additional resources, insight, or other helpful feedback. A simple “I like your post” will result in a 0.

You will not be able to see your classmates’ posts until you make your first post.

Note: plagiarism is not tolerated in this course. Everything must be in your own words with sources! Failure to do so will result in failing grade.

Use Critical Thinking Skills and Metacognition to research current events in the macro environment.

Access to care, quality of care, and the cost of care are the top areas that hospitals are working to improve. The cost of health care and financing health care results in a national healthcare expenditure and sources of payment must be investigated. Healthcare costs are also inextricably bound to quality issues and therefore quality initiatives are linked to healthcare spending.

National Health Expenditures (NHE) and trends are reported annually by the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Office of the Actuary, National Health Statistics Group, the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The expenditures are reported and tracked over time using a standard format that identifies both the private and public sources of funds as well as the objects of expense. Reports are issued annually, two years following closure of the reporting period. See Table 8-1 in the textbook.

In 2014, NHE totaled more than $3.0 trillion, 17.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and that equates to approximately $9,523 person (see Figure 8-1). There are a number of interrelated factors that contribute to healthcare expenditures. These include aging population; new drugs and medical and diagnostic technology; emphasis on specialty medicine; large numbers of uninsured and underinsured; volume-based reimbursement incentives; and labor intensity.

Assume you have been working as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and you receive a call from the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), who requests that the two of you work together on a healthcare spending project. Your first task is to conduct a PESTLE Analysis. Use Critical Thinking Skills and Metacognition to research current events in the macro environment. Then, prepare a Microsoft PowerPoint 10-slide narrative using a PESTLE Analysis. A PESTLE Analysisidentifies political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental factors.

Your 10-slide PESTLE PowerPoint should follow this format:

Slide 1: Cover Page
Include the title of your presentation, your name, the course number and course title, your professor’s name, and the date.
Slide 2: Background / Executive Summary
Describe the details of the situation. Use bullets with short sentences. The title of these slides should be Executive Summary.
Slide 3: Thesis Statement
Identify the focus of your research. The title of this slide should be Thesis Statement.
Slides 4-9: Support
Support your thesis statement following the SESC formula: State, Explain, Support, and Conclude. (An overview of using Sublevel 1 and Sublevel 2 headings is provided in the following video: APA Style – Formatting the Title Page, Abstract, and Body.
You should include at least three court cases and related peer-reviewed articles from within the past five years. In-text citations should be in the American Psychological Association (APA) format.
