Critically consider how the different aims of sentencing might apply to Serena’s case and the suitability of different types of punishment. In particular, consider how Serena might respond to a prison sentence, and whether she should receive a suspended sentence order or community order instead. Finally, consider what alternative dispute resolution measures the Westminster Community Safety Partnership (of which the probation service is a member) might offer to take if the court agrees to let Serena off with an absolute or conditional discharge.

Instructions to Candidates:

The Evans family have moved onto Penwith estate in the London borough of Westminster. They play loud music late into the night and dump rubbish in their garden and onto the street. Their 18-year-old daughter, Serena, starts hanging out with her 16-year-old sister by the newsagent during the early evening with other youth on the estate. Although none of the youths are linked to any serious crime on the estate, they are uncivil to passers-by. Elderly residents are clearly afraid of the gang and avoid going to the shops after dark. Mothers complain that they have to push prams onto the road in order to pass it. There are also rumours that the youths sell drugs. The local police are aware that Serena and her sister received youth cautions twelve months ago for possession of a small quantity of cannabis. These were their first recorded offences.
One evening, Serena is arrested following a stop and search operation on the estate for possession of 28 grammes of cannabis divided into eight polythene sealed bags. She is charged with intent to supply after the police raid the Evans’ home and find traces of cannabis on their kitchen scales.
Serena has plead guilty at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The sentencing judge is considering sentencing Serena to a short prison sentence and has asked the probation service to write a pre-sentence report. The probation service has asked for your academic opinion on the sentence it should recommend to the court.
In your 2000-word report to the probation service, consider how the different aims of sentencing might apply to Serena’s case and the suitability of different types of punishment.

What are the differences in your variable between countries? Compare the distribution of your chosen variable across your two selected countries carrying out

Researching Social Life II SC203/SC208

Your end of term assignment is a data analysis paper. The aim is to show that you have a good grasp of the basic
statistical methods we have covered in the module and that you can write up statistical findings in a clear and
competent way.
The dataset you will analyse is from the European Social Survey (Round 8, 2016). The European Social Survey
(ESS) is an academically driven cross-national survey that has been conducted across Europe since 2001. Every two
years, face-to-face interviews are conducted with newly selected, cross-sectional samples. You can download the
dataset and find out about the survey design, the questionnaires and the data here and there is a copy on Moodle too:
www.europeansocialsurvey.org/about/
The task
Select a variable and two countries to compare; carry out some statistical analyses and write the results up in a short
report in sections as described below. Your report should be no more than 750-1000 words not including tables and
figures and references.
What you should do
First: select two countries that you want to compare. They need not include the UK. In SPSS, you can select those
two countries and either filter out the other countries or save a new version of your datafile, discarding the other
countries. (You will see how to do this in the lab, and here is a video tutorial on how to do it:
https://www.linkedin.com/learning/spss-statistics-essential-training/selecting-cases?u=51088249
Topics
There are lots of interesting subjective and attitudinal variables on topics such as personal values, welfare attitudes,
sexual identity as well as several demographic variables. Some of these are measured on 11 point scales, some on
four or five point scales. You can use any of them as if they are interval variables for the purposes of this assignment.
You can also treat those that have four or five points as categorical variables if you wish. The demographic variables
are a mixture of interval/ordinal variables. You will need to look at the 2016 questionnaire in order to see the full
wordings of the survey items:
https://www.europeansocialsurvey.org/docs/round8/fieldwork/source/ESS8_source_questionnaires.pdf
Some background on each of the question topics covered in the dataset can be found in the following references:

Data analysis tasks
1. Select one subjective (that is to say, attitudes, values, beliefs) variable as your variable of interest. This is the
focus of your report. Write a paragraph explaining what your variable measures and what
sociological/psychological construct it taps into. You can include one or two references to literature on the
topic if you wish. (300 words max)
2. Using data from both of your chosen countries combined (what we call the pooled sample), do the following.
If your variable is quantitative then present in a table some summary statistics (mean, standard deviation,
range and confidence interval) and a histogram. If you are treating your variable as categorical (ie not more
than 5 possible values) then present a frequency table and a bar chart or histogram. Describe what you see
(250 words max)
3. What are the differences in your variable between countries? Compare the distribution of your chosen
variable across your two selected countries carrying out
a) a crosstabulation with chi2 test if your variable is categorical (up to five categories)
b) comparing means using an independent samples t-test if your variable is quantitative (five or more scale
points)
Write up what you see in terms of the differences in your variable between countries:
c) Are the distributions similar or different? If different (they almost certainly will be at least a bit different)
then say in what way (differences in mean, standard deviation, percentages in which categories and so on).
(250 words max)
d) Are the differences statistically significant? Interpret the results of either the t-test or the chi-square test,
depending on which you have carried out, to answer this question. You will need to mention what is the null
hypothesis and alternate hypothesis and to say what the p-value (sometimes shown as sig. in SPSS).
(200 words max)
General tips
Make sure that you label all of your tables and figures and include them in the main text, not in an appendix. Only
include SPSS output that you actually comment on in the text. You will not get marks for output that you do not
discuss. Format the report so that it looks neat and presentable. The easiest way to produce good tables and graphs is
by using Excel. You will get marks for presentation as well as what you write.

Ensuring individuals or groups are not
systematically treated unfairly, and can
gain full benefits of belonging to society
including contributing

Is closely linked to the notion of social
justice

Equality is both a value and a principle

Social inequalities are differences in income, resources, power and status within and between
societies. Such inequalities are maintained by
those in powerful positions via institutions and social processes.
(Naidoo and Wills, 2008)
Do you agree with this definition?
How would you define social inequality?
what conclusions did the author reach? Gaining an overview will help
Remember to carry out further reading, expanding your knowledge on the issues discussed in the
book. Is there supporting evidence for the points raised in the book? Are there alternative viewpoints
out there? How was the book received by other academics in the field?
Structuring your review
• Introduction
Be sure to introduce the book that you are reviewing, noting such details as the title, author, edition,
publisher and any other pertinent points that may be of interest to the reader. Highlight the issues
that you will be discussing, perhaps emphasising their importance/relevance to the subject area that
you are studying.
• Summary of contents/arguments/themes
Concisely summarise the contents of the book drawing out and highlighting the themes that you will
be discussing. Remember that this summary shouldn’t take up the majority of the book review; it is
the critical discussion and analysis of the text that is most important.
• Critical discussion
It is very important that your discussion of the issues raised in the book is more analysis than
description. This discussion will be directed by your assignment brief but potential topics could
include; areas of disagreement or controversy, conclusions and findings, potential gaps or
weaknesses in the text and possibilities for further research. Remember that although it is perfectly
valid for you to criticise the book and the author’s arguments you must then provide evidence and
reasoning to back up your criticisms.
• Conclusion
Based on the earlier critical discussion you must now summarise the strengths and weaknesses of
the book under review and perhaps evaluate the impact this book had on your understanding of the
subject and its importance to the area of study as a whole.

Critically evaluate how far the Occupiers’ Liability Acts 1957 and 1984 provide for liability in a fair and appropriate manner.

Instructions to Students:
There are 6 questions on the paper. You must answer 2 questions in total, ONE
from PART A and ONE from PART B. All questions carry equal marks.
PLEASE NOTE: Your answers MUST be properly referenced and each answer
MUST include a bibliography. Adequacy of referencing will form part of the
marking criteria.
PART A – You MUST answer this question
1. Erin runs a pleasure boat, The Southern Belle, taking holidaymakers along
the south coast. She wishes to make as many trips as possible each day to
maximise her profit. Erin generally checks the boat for damage after each trip
but one day she has no time to make the customary checks before the boat
sets off. She does not notice that there is a hole in the hull of the boat, which
was made when the boat hit a rock on a previous trip. The boat begins to take
on water at a fast rate.
The holidaymakers are forced to abandon ship and they are swimming in the
sea. Some of them do not have time to put on life belts and two people, Rio
and Anya, drown before help can arrive. Wayne, a passenger on the boat had
tried to rescue Rio but failed.
Rio’s fiancée, Sneha, watches from the shore as Rio’s body is lifted from the
water. Anya’s husband, Zak, receives a call from their daughter, Pippa and
rushes to the hospital mortuary, where Anya’s body has been taken. She has
been cleaned up a little, but there is still oil and seaweed attached to her
body.
Sneha, Wayne and Zak suffer mental breakdowns.
Advise Erin of her liability for the events.
PART B – You must answer ONE question from this section
2. Critically evaluate how far the Occupiers’ Liability Acts 1957 and 1984 provide
for liability in a fair and appropriate manner.
3. ‘The aims of tort law are to reimburse the victims of misconduct or wrongs and
discourage that misconduct.’
Critically discuss if, and how, the tort of trespass achieves the above aims.
Ensure you use case law to illustrate your points.
4. Critically discuss by use of case law how, with regard to the principle of
vicarious liability, the law interprets the requirement that the tort must be
committed in the course of employment.
5. ‘The requirement of a proprietary interest in land is no longer sustainable in an
era of greater human rights consideration.’
In light of the above statement, critically evaluate the functions of the tort of
nuisance and assess, with regard to human rights considerations, the merits
of this restriction as to who may bring a claim for nuisance.
6. Critically discuss, by use of case law, the nature of the duty owed by
employers to employees. What difficulties confront an employee who is trying
to bring a claim against an employer for a stress related injury?

Develop a linear regression model to explain the variation in the service rating.

Linear regression analysis | Statistics homework helpLinear Regression Analysis
Terry Downes owns a commercial cleaning company. He has conducted a survey of customers to
determine how satisfied they are with the work performed. He devised a 100-point rating scale—with 0
being poor and 100 being excellent service, selected a random sample of 14 customers, and asked
them to rate the service. He also recorded the number of worker hours spent in the customer’s facility.
These are in the file named Downes.
Use Excel to complete the following:
1. Develop a scatter plot showing the variables, rate of service and worker hours, with the y variable on
the vertical axis and the x variable on the horizontal axis, and indicating the type of relationship.
2. Develop a linear regression model to explain the variation in the service rating.
Use Word to complete the following:
1. Describe the model, showing the results of the pertinent hypothesis tests, using a significance level
of 0.10.
2. Submit your work in a Word document and attach your Excel file.
