What kinds of research questions lead to a qualitative approach?

Research questions that lend themselves to a qualitative approach often address questions about how people construct meaning. In this way, qualitative research questions set the stage for open-ended, inductive inquiry.

For this Discussion, review the case study entitled, “Social Work Research: Program Evaluation.” Consider the kinds of questions that inform a qualitative approach. Think about the quantitative method described in the case study and consider methods you might use to investigate the effectiveness of a program from a qualitative perspective.

Post your explanations of the following:

What kinds of research questions lead to a qualitative approach?
If you chose to conduct quantitative research in your Week 4 proposal, how might you reframe the research question in a way that lends itself to a qualitative approach?
If you focused on a qualitative proposal in Week 4, describe the qualitative research question and explain the rationale for choosing a qualitative approach.
Be sure to explain how you might collect the data.
Consider which qualitative method (case study, grounded theory, ethnographic research, cross-sectional research, feminist research, or participatory action research) would be most suitable for answering the research question.

What is meant by “evolutionary change”; meaning what is it and how would you know when it has occurred?

Discussion Topic 1
Natural Selection

A novel fungicide is introduced and widely applied to cereal crops. After five years, resistant genotypes of the fungal pathogen are detected at a frequency of about 1%; resistance is widely distributed across the pathogen’s range. Within two years, these have become so common that the fungicide becomes worthless.

Explain how this pattern can be explained by the basic features of natural selection. Include in your answer:

A brief description of what natural selection is.
The conditions that must be met in order for natural selection to occur.
How natural selection explains the scenario above.

Discussion Topic 2
Mechanisms of Evolutionary Change

This unit we are learning that there are several mechanisms that lead to evolutionary change within a population or species: mutation, migration, genetic drift, non-random breeding and natural selection.

What is meant by “evolutionary change”; meaning what is it and how would you know when it has occurred?
Select two of the mechanisms listed above and explain how each can lead to evolutionary change as defined in Q#1. Be specific and use an example of each.

Explain the role of a healthcare leader or manager in meeting the needs of the various stakeholders, as well as meeting the goals of the strategic plan and organization.

Strategic Planning
“For tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” –African proverb

As this course has emphasized, healthcare leaders and managers typically have oversight of a vast array of responsibilities and outcomes. Like a general of an army or a physician helping a patient through a long-term disease, they must demonstrate that they can make critical day-to-day decisions, but they must also have a vision for a better future for those they serve. In healthcare management, that vision can best be achieved through planning involving a strategic process and group of stakeholders.

Healthcare leaders need to know how to ensure that their organizations succeed for the long term, and to anticipate market forces and policy and funding changes, among other challenges. In strategic planning, the process is as important as the plan itself.

This week, you will explore various aspects of strategic planning. You will examine challenges related to strategic planning in healthcare settings, the roles of stakeholders and healthcare leaders in the process, and components and goals of successful strategic plans.

Learning Objectives
Students will:
Analyze stakeholder roles in meeting strategic planning challenges
Analyze the role of healthcare leaders and managers in meeting the needs of stakeholders and the goals of the organization through strategic planning
Identify the components and goals of a successful strategic plan
Compare goals and strategies of strategic plans
Analyze barriers to successful strategic planning implementation

Discussion: Prior Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance
The six Ps in the title of this Discussion, “Prior Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance,” indicate the value of planning. When healthcare leaders and managers carefully plan their goals and strategies for the long-term as well as the short-term and involve the right stakeholders and fully understand their perspectives, this helps the organization be more strategic in attaining its current and future goals.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Consider the role of the healthcare manager or leader in strategic planning in healthcare settings.
Review the case study provided in your course text: Last Chance Hospital.
By Day 4
Post a comprehensive response to the following:

Using specific examples and support from the case study provided in your Learning Resources, describe the main challenges related to strategic planning in Last Chance Hospital and explain why they are challenges.
Identify the key stakeholders in the case study. Then, explain the role, if any, each might take in strategic planning and why.
Explain the role of a healthcare leader or manager in meeting the needs of the various stakeholders, as well as meeting the goals of the strategic plan and organization.
