How do you define History, why is it important to study history, and what would you like to do professionally as a historian and why that professional path?

To help you think about what History is all about at the start of this class, you will need to complete the following assignment but it is not based on any of the course readings or other assignments, so you can start working on it right away. At the end of the semester, you will write a related paper, Reflective Paper II, which will demonstrate what you now think History is about and how your understanding of the nature and practice of History has developed throughout this course.
In this assignment, you will write an informal statement explaining what “history” is and why it is worthwhile to research and write history. The activity provides an initial self-assessment of what you already know about the issues involved in historical interpretation, and so it supports the course
outcome to cultivate an identity as a historian. This paper should be 450-550 words in length (2-3 pages). Each paragraph must have a topic sentence.
Since the statement is informal, you may include your own opinions. It is not necessary to conduct research into course materials or other sources. Citations are only required if you put forth an idea or supporting information that is not your own. If citations (footnotes and bibliography) are provided,
they must be consistent with each other and as close to Chicago Citation Style as possible. The statement must be as mechanically perfect as you can manage: excellent spelling and grammar, no run-on sentences, no subject/verb disagreements, correct use of punctuation. Use active voice.
Based on your own knowledge and opinions now (at the start of the course), answer the following questions in a two to three page paper (the minimum length is two full pages and the maximum length is three full pages, no more, no less). The question to address in your paper has three parts to answer:
How do you define History, why is it important to study history, and what would you like to do professionally as a historian and why that professional path?
To help you think about why others have become historians check out Why Study History
Base your answer on your current views rather than the readings. It is not necessary to conduct research into the course materials or other sources – do not start any of the reading assignments for Week One until you have completed this assignment. Citations are only required if you put forth an
idea or supporting information that is not your own original idea. A few things to do in terms of style
for your paper include the following:

-double space your paper
-indent the first line of each paragraph; you do not need an extra space in between each paragraph
-your paragraphs should be between four and eight or nine sentences long (no shorter than four
sentences or longer than nine sentences)
-use proper spelling and grammar.
Your paper will be graded on your ability to address these three questions in a coherent essay.
Spelling, grammar, and general clarity are part of the grade as you should start working on presenting
your ideas as a student in a clear and professional way. Please see the grading rubric attached to this
assignment for details.

Demonstrate a critical awareness of differing research methodologies and their application for health and social care professionals.

Assignment guidance ODP2003.
To pass this assignment, you must meet the following learning
outcomes:
1. Demonstrate a critical awareness of differing research methodologies
and their application for health and social care professionals. (HCPC
12.1, 12.2, 14.21, 14.23)
2. Demonstrate an ability to critically analyse and appraise research
using an appropriate framework. (HCPC 14.21, 14.22, 14.24)
3. Consider critically how evidence can be utilised to underpin and
inform best practice. (HCPC 12.1, 14.21, 14.24)
4. Demonstrate the ability to adhere concisely to the requirements
contained within the assessment brief.
This guide will take you through the different sections of the assignment,
providing a template to guide you.
Introduction.
Introduce the concept of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), what is it?
How does the use of research fit into it? What is research and why is it
important in healthcare? Why is research and using research important
to ODPs (think about the HCPC standards)? Remember to thoroughly
reference! Learning outcome 3.
Tell your reader what you are going to do during this assignment. You
are going to tell your reader that you are going to critically appraise a
research article and why. What is critical appraisal and why is it
important? What critical appraisal tool are you using and why that one?
What advantages does it have over others? Briefly introduce the article
you have chosen to critique. Please remember that the subject matter
of the paper is not the focus of this assignment. Remember to
thoroughly reference! Part of learning outcome 2.
Introduce the two main research methodologies (qualitative and
quantitative). Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of what
their main features are, why they would be chosen and for what type of
research question? Compare the two and discuss strengths and
weaknesses of each approach. Remember to thoroughly reference! Part
of learning outcome 1.
2
Main body: Your appraisal using a critical appraisal tool (CASP).
Learning outcome 2.
• You must read the article and question each area in detail and
answer the questions raised. Please follow the order of your
chosen critical appraisal tool (eg CASP) and keep to the
sections, in order to pass LO2!
• You need to be critical throughout. This means you do not
simply describe what the paper has done and you never take
anything you read as face value! Everything you read and every
decision the author of the paper has made throughout the research
process, ask WHY? What are the advantages and disadvantages
of the approach they have used? Are there alternatives to what
they have done and what are the advantages/disadvantages
compared to the chosen methods? Remember to thoroughly
reference!
• For example: If they are clear/ unclear about a step in the research
process, why is it important to be clear about what they have done
and who says so (reference)?
• For example: If the paper has decided to use interviews for their
data collection, what are the advantages of using interviews for
what they want to find out and for that participant group? What are
the disadvantages? Has the researcher justified why they have
used interviews? What could be the alternatives to interviews for
that project? Would the alternatives have been better or worse and
why?
As a guide, when writing your assignment approximate equal weighting
should be given to addressing each of the following ten points:
1. Is there a clear statement of the aims of the research?
Consider:
What is the goal and aims of the research? Or is there a hypothesis?
Or
is there a research question? Are the aims clearly stated? How do the
aims of the research link to the literature review? Are research questions
stated at the beginning and addressed throughout the study?
3
2. Are qualitative, quantitative or mixed-methods methodology
appropriate for the research? Part of learning outcome 1. Consider:
Is the reason for using a mixed-methods, qualitative or quantitative
approach made explicit?
How does the approach add value to the study?
Could a different approach have proved more beneficial to the
research?
3. Is the sampling and recruitment strategy appropriate to the
research aims?
Consider:
Has the researcher explained how participants were selected? Are
inclusion and exclusion criteria clear? Is the sampling method
identified? Is the sample size appropriate for the type of research
selected?
Has the researcher/s explained why the participants they selected
were
appropriate to provide the type of data and knowledge required?
4. Is the data collected in a way that addresses the research issue?
Is it clear how data was collected? Has the researcher provided a
rationale for method of data collection? How was the raw data collected?
Has the researcher/s justified the chosen method of data collection?
Are the data collection methods appropriate?
Are the data collection methods detailed and explicit?
5. Are the relationships between researcher/s and participants
adequately
considered?
Has the researcher critically examined their own role, bias and
influence
during formulation of research questions, recruitment and data
collection?
4
This section is very important in qualitative research.
6. Have ethical issues been taken into consideration?
Did the researchers state that they had obtained ethical approval and
how was this process carried out?
Has the researcher discussed issues raised by the study i.e.
Confidentiality, consent and the effects of the study on participants?
Are any specific ethical issues identified within the research article?
7. Was data analysis sufficiently rigorous? Consider:
Is there in-depth description of the analysis process?
If thematic analysis is used is it clear how categories and themes were
derived from the data?
Do statistics look true, believable and usable?
Is all of the collected data presented in the findings? If not do the
researchers state why not?
Did the researcher examine their own role in potential bias and
influence during the data analysis?
8. Is there a clear statement of findings?
Are the findings explicit?
Is there adequate discussion of findings?
Has the researcher addressed issues of reliability, validity, rigour and
credibility?
Are findings discussed in relation to the original research questions?
9. How valuable is the research?
Has the researcher discussed the contribution that the study makes to
existing knowledge, practice or policy?
Does the study identify new areas where research is necessary?
Has the researcher discussed whether findings can be transferred to
5
other populations?
Conclusion
Conclude your assignment by telling your reader the outcome of your
appraisal. From your findings, is this piece of literature of sufficient
quality, credibility and rigor to inform practice? This is your educated
opinion, based on your appraisal.
Tell your reader what you have learned from doing this assignment.
What skills have you learned that you can take forward in your career as
an ODP?

Critically reflect on the case study chosen by your action learning set. You should demonstrate critical exploration of the complexities of contemporary social work practice and professional decision-making, including analysis of the impact of values, ethics and diversity

Susan is an 80-year-old woman who is fiercely independent. Susan worked as a cleaner at the local primary school until she retired 20 years ago. Susan loves her cat “smoky” who she describes as “dog like” in terms of his loyalty and she is a committed vegetarian. Susan used to very sociable in her younger days being a member of local WI and a church goer. Susan was married twice and from her second marriage had a daughter called Rachel. Susan lives alone within a terraced house are rarely goes out since her husband sadly passed away two years ago. Susan and Rachel are estranged from each other. Rachel has her own mental health issues which exacerbates their challenging relationship
Susan has a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and arthritis. Susan was diagnosed under the memory assessment service (MAS) five years ago and placed under GP review. Susan has severe memory issues and is disorientated to time and person. Susan has been reported to leave food for humans for her cat in bowls. Susan goes shopping but does not buy enough food to sustain her. Susan has experienced difficulties within her community. A shop keeper now refuses to serve Susan as he is worried that she will make allegations about him. Many bus drivers have refused to allow her on their bus. The local community police are aware that Susan appears to be at risk in her community due her appearance and behaviour.
Susan has expressed several times to the care workers and the last Social Worker that she does not want to go into a care home.
Rachel does not visit Susan but expresses clear views that she feels Susan should be placed in a care home. Rachel confirms that Susan has always expressed that she does not want to move from her home. Rachel has advised that she will not support Susan within any meetings or assessments.
Susan’s G.P. who knows her well expressed that he feels that Susan should be moved to a care home as soon as possible.
Susan has a care package of a visit of an hour once a day in the morning to support her with her personal care and to also prompt her to take her medication. Susan has been assessed as nil cost for her possible contribution for care support. Susan refuses to engage with the care workers for support.
Susan was referred to Social Services by the care agency for a Care Act (2014) assessment of her social care needs and possible safeguarding. The safeguarding inquiry concludes that while Susan is at risk that it is as a result from longer term issues which would be best dealt with through allocation of a community Social Worker.
The care workers reported their concerns as:
• Susan refuses support with her personal care and day to day tasks.
• Susan is at risk of self-neglect and recorded wearing the same clothes for several days
• Susan has had a fall down the stairs in the last month and there is no equipment within her property
• Susan visits the local shop but buys cat food only and there is minimal food in her fridge and she appears to have lost weight
• Susan visits the bank and writes a cheque for “cash” which can be large amounts
• Susan thinks that she has a lodger in her home who uses her kitchen at night
• Susan has been found to have £800 in loosely her pocket on the street by the Police
Assessment 2: Written Assignment
Following on from the group presentation students will submit a 2,500 word critical reflection with 2 tasks; it will be marked by academic staff and which holds the academic grade for this module. Both tasks must be undertaken in order to meet the learning outcomes.

Task One: Critically reflect on the case study chosen by your action learning set. You should demonstrate critical exploration of the complexities of contemporary social work practice and professional decision-making, including analysis of the impact of values, ethics and diversity (1,500 words). (Learning outcomes 4, 5 & 8)

Task Two: Critically reflect on your own learning & development in relation to collaborative working in health & social care, drawing on your experience of group working in this module and referring to relevant research & literature. Identify future learning needs and how you might address these (1,000 words). (Learning outcomes 6 &7)

The assignment must be submitted via turnitin on or before s

Feedback & provisional grades will be available by as. Please note that all grades available at this time are subject to verification by the Programme Module Board.

Collaborative working is an ongoing, interactive process rather than a discrete set of techniques. It is a central function of Social Work practice and thus a role that practitioners are required to assume routinely. Thus, social work practitioners can be equated to actors in collaborative working, shaping process & outcomes, and being shaped by the process.
For these reasons, we should understand our own contributions and responses to process.

Reflecting on FALS experience offers potential for mining a rich seam of learning about:

• The complexities of interpersonal working (which underpin much collaborative working)
• The often invisible but time-consuming practical/logistical minutiae of much of professional life
• The critical importance of personal/professional responsibility
• Your own strengths/weaknesses (current potential) for effective collaborative working
• Action planning to develop your skills/aptitude for effective collaborative working in future (enhancing potential)

Reflecting on learning & development needs also fits into the requirements for registered social workers to identify and maintain areas for continuing professional development in line with Professional Capabilities Framework and SWE Professional Standards.

Within your Assignment Two: Task 2 –
Put theory around interpersonal working from the teaching and learning from within the workshops and your reading
Find and use research around interpersonal working within health and social care in your essay
Make links to PCF and SWE to interpersonal working
Make links to your own experiences within your FALS
Identify using the PCF and SWE your strengths and areas for development
