What insights does sociology have to offer about what is happening in America relative to these issues? Can sociology make us healthier?

While the United States is a wealthy nation and spends vast resources on healthcare services, Americans overall are not so healthy and in fact, our life expectancy is decreasing. Chapter 18 in the text discusses Health, Healthcare and Disability. While the covid crisis has created a health crisis, we have to understand that we are also experiencing a record number of drug overdose deaths and very high rates of suicide.

What insights does sociology have to offer about what is happening in America relative to these issues? Can sociology make us healthier?

What big ideas or big technological changes do you see in the years ahead? Is change something we manage well? What happens when we resist change?

Sociologists tell us that social change is created by
a) new technologies and or
b) new or shifting ideas or beliefs. Maybe it’s both, but we have to understand it is generally one or the other that leads the way. For example – from the 1940’s until the 1990’s China did not accept the idea that Capitalism was or could be a useful way to organize their economy. In the 1990’s, China got rid of its Soviet-style, state run, planned economy. In less than 3 decades, the nation was transformed from a impoverished third-world nation to the number 2 economy in the world. It was an idea that made this happen, not a particular technology.

a. Is the innovation described adequately for you to understand it?
b. Does the presentation provide enough information about the success of the innovation or change in other locations/situations to convince you that it will work in this situation? This information could be more academic research on how this type of technology, institutional change, etc. works under certain conditions, or it could be more specific evidence from another organization or business.
c. Has the presenter clearly identified the costs of implementing?
d. Has the presenter clearly linked the benefits to the definition of the problem? Have they also identified any co-benefits that would accrue to the organization or to society from implementing this innovation/change?

Provide project timeline and key outcome metrics.
a. Is the timeline adequate to achieve the promised benefits?
b. Are the key outcome metrics linked to the threat/opportunity definition, and to the benefits identified above?

In what ways were the roles of African American men significantly different from women before the Civil War?

In the 1930s, different historians, folklorists, and others as a part of the Works Progress Administration, made a point to interview the aging population of black Americans who were alive before the Civil War and remembered slavery. They collected more than 2,300 narratives and memoirs called the WPA American Slave Narratives. They are available in their entirety on the Library of Congress’s website. I am providing you with 11 selections of men and women telling their stories about life before the Civil War.

Your assignment is to write a 3 page essay examining the narratives I have provided answering this question: in what ways were the roles of African American men significantly different from women before the Civil War?

There are many ways to approach this essay, but my recommendation is to approach the topic thematically. Pick 2-3 themes, like family, work, or health, etc., create an argument and use the sources to support your argument.
