Prepare a power point presentation to brief the commander of the European Command (EUCOM) and provide recommendations for potential gender issues on the ground in Ukraine. EUCOM is one of the eleven unified combatant commands of the U.S. military. Its headquarters is located in Stuttgart, Germany and its responsibilities cover 21,000,000 square miles and 51 countries and territories, including Europe, Russia, Greenland, and Israel. EUCOM is commanded by General Tom Jones (not his real name).
This presentation calls for you to conduct a gender analysis, that means asking and answering the right questions from a gender perspective. But, instead of writing an analysis, you are tasked to complete a power point presentation. You should prepare a minimum of 7 slides and no more than 10. Each slide should have no more than 5 bullets. A format has been provided in the module for this week. You MUST use this format, but you can design the slides as you choose. There are numerous readings included this week. Look at the material as resources in helping you prepare your assignment. It is not the intent that you deeply read all of them. Include ONLY 5 of these sources on the “Reference” slide.
SITUATION. EUCOM has been instrumental in organizing a coalition of nations to send weapons and security assistance to Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s attacks. This support includes some $350 million in aid from the U.S., as well as support from Germany and Sweden (Military.com, 2022,https://www.military.com/daily-news/2022/03/04/global-weapons-pipeline-ukraine-being-managed-us-european-command.html).
You serve as the EUCOMs Gender Advisor (GENAD). General Jones, a great champion of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, understands the importance of the integration of gender perspectives within military missions in achieving operational effectiveness. He has asked you to complete a gender analysis of the war in Ukraine, looking at both Russian and Ukraine potential gender issues. His secretary has saved a space on his calendar for a 20-minute briefing.
