SCENARIO
You are an organizer working with a coalition of local neighborhood groups. You have had great difficulty getting the groups to overcome their turf battles and other parochial interests to come together towards the unifying goals of neighborhood improvement, crime reduction, and youth engagement. Attendance at meetings has been low, and leaders have spent more time arguing with each other than working together. You are surprised and elated, then, to arrive at one coalition meeting to find more than 80 people gathered and enthusiastic to present a new work plan for the coalition. Apparently, leaders from several of the organizations have concluded that recent immigrants in the neighborhoods are to blame for the conditions of housing deterioration and rising crime. They want to work together to form a ‘neighborhood watch’-style organization that would investigate immigrants’ legal statuses and turn undocumented immigrants over to federal authorities. They also want to stop publishing any neighborhood documents in multiple languages, as ‘that only encourages them.’ There appears to be near unanimity about this problem and the proposed solution—the neighborhood leaders have gone through the coalition’s established channels to win support from the grassroots supporters. As the organizer, you are genuinely concerned, though, as this idea and these positions are contrary to your values and your emphasis on the well-being of all area residents.

APPLICATION AND INTERPRETATION OF PUBLIC HEALTH DATA
TOPIC: Application of the t-Test
The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBSS) is a national survey monitoring health behavior among youth and young adults. It is administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For this assignment, use the “Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System Dataset” provided to practice calculating and interpreting the t-test. Refer to the instructional videos in the topic resources and the Using and Interpreting Statistics: A Practical Text for the Behavioral, Social, and Health Sciences textbook as a guide.
Part 1
Refer to the topic resources to review the documentation, questionnaires, and general information pertaining to the YRBSS and YRBS. Then use the 2015 “Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System Dataset” and conduct a two-sample t-test to determine if weight (in kg) differs by sex. Submit the SPSS output for the t-test.
Part 2
Create an 8-10 slide PowerPoint presentation to discuss the findings for the t-test. For the presentation of your PowerPoint, use Loom to create a voice-over or a video. Refer to the topic resources for additional guidance on recording your presentation with Loom. Most college instructors require students to turn off their cell phones in class so that their phones will not ring and also to prevent students from texting during class. The policy has become a serious point of contention among students, many of whom rely on cell phone applications to help organize their ever-changing schedules. Parents, too, have begun raising concerns over their children’s safety. Parents are worried that they will be unable to reach their children during an emergency if all phones are shut off. As a member of the College Board, it is your responsibility to read all such incoming mail. The following is a small sample:
Letter 1: Our civil liberties should never be subject to change. What the school board is attempting to do here is remind students that their rights can be given and taken away by authority. This particular case may be insignificant, but a larger philosophical debate regarding the inherent rights of the people is anything but minor.
Letter 2: I worked hard to get into college. The classroom encompasses everything I value in higher education. It is not the right place or time for students to be fiddling with their cell phones. As a student, I support the new initiative. I hope other students will understand why this move is so important.
Letter 3: I put my trust in the authority at hand. If school officials believe that having cell phones in the classroom is a distraction, I trust their judgment. The public is generally ignorant anyway, and it’s likely that they are expressing opinions out of emotion, not a sense of truth.
Step 2: Analyze different perspectives and biases.
