undertake a 3000 word critique on one significant major investigation selected from seven available case studies.

Assignment Brief 2: Case Study
You will undertake a 3000 word critique on one significant major investigation selected from seven available case studies. This assignment is due to be submitted via Turnitin, on the Intelligence Led Policing and Major Crime
This submission is worth 75% of the overall module grade.
What is a critique of a case study?
A critical assessment of the investigation by the police of a specified case. The critique should examine selected investigative and/or forensic strategies used by the police comparing and contrasting them with best practice found in the College of Policing’s Authorised Professional Practice, the Murder Investigation Manual 2006 and The Major Incident Room Standardised Administrative Procedures (MIRSAP) 2005. A good assignment will include a critical review of the application of key legislation. A critique of a case study is designed to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of current thinking in the area of major investigation and intelligence led policing.
Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the problems of major investigations and the approaches to deal with them.
Understand the strategies and the role of the personnel engaged during major investigations together with the strategic intelligence requirements.
Provide a critical understanding of the techniques and methods utilised within major investigations and intelligence led policing operations
Which Case Study?
All of the cases below resulted in the murder or manslaughter of the people named. Your case study must be selected from this list.
Victoria Climbié
Damilola Taylor
Stephen Lawrence
Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman (Soham murders)
Sian O’Callaghan and Becky Godden Edwards (Halliwell murders)
Rachel Nickell (The Wimbledon Common murder)
Suffolk Murders – Operation Sumac
Structure of your case study critique:
An Introduction outlining the overall aim of the essay, the objectives to achieve the aim as well as contextualising the case and defining the parameters. Including the parameters is important as you WILL NOT be able to critique the whole case within 3000 words. (Use approximately 10% of your word count around 300 words)
A main discussion section developing clear, well-reasoned and critical arguments as to what you consider to be successful and unsuccessful actions and the impact that they had on the outcome of the case. (Use approximately 80% 0f your word count around 2,400 words).
A succinct conclusion drawing your arguments and ideas together, outlining your overall view of the case indicating any alternative strategies or lines of enquiry. (Use approximately 10% of your word count around 300 words).
N.B The 3000-word count DOES NOT INCLUDE your reference list and in text citations. You MUST MEET the assignment brief to pass the assessment.

Critically discuss the following: Prison sentences should be extended to adequately prepare community and support services given the reintegration challenges faced by persons discharged from prison.

YOUR ASSESSMENT TASK
CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING THREE TOPICS and address the question using appropriate
evidence (theory, research).

  1. Critically discuss the following: Prison sentences should be extended to adequately prepare
community and support services given the reintegration challenges faced by persons discharged
    from prison.
    OR
  2. Critically discuss the following: Individuals who have committed a crime and are facing
Mental Health problems can be treated effectively in prison settings.
    OR
  3. Critically discuss the following: Social contexts of crime are irrelevant to our understanding of

    GUIDANCE NOTES:
Approaching this coursework: This assessment is to be written in the style of a coursework
essay and submitted via the Turnitin Link that will be opened in Moodle 7 days ahead of the
submission deadline. This submission is to be fully referenced in APA style.
The subjects covered in the questions were covered in your lectures so please refer back to the
materials there for ideas on where to start.
Structure: The structure is not strictly set; you should aim for one that facilitates the
coherent presentation of your argument e.g. you can include an introductory paragraph and
a conclusion while the main body of your essay should discuss evidence in a critical manner.
Addressing the question: read the question carefully and ensure that you cover all the points
asked. Avoid expanding on a specific part and ignoring others, making sure that your overall
    argument is well balanced.
Critical evaluation: As above, your argument needs to be evidence based and the outcome
of the evaluation of the relevant body of the literature. Including both supporting and
contradicting evidence and discussing them critically will make your argument stronger.
*Avoid only including evidence that agrees with your overall argument; that would put you
in risk of reaching a conclusion that is not well informed.
    ASSESSMENT DETAILS:
This assessment component contributes 50% towards the overall module mark.

What is the nurse’s role in responding to and caring for patients who have been newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Summative Assignment: Literature review
The nurse’s role in responding to and planning for care, support, and education in lifestyle change for newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients.

Word count: 1638

Student Number:1908000
Background
A young patient was admitted into the Emergency Department after suffering a fall. Upon examination, the patient was found to have impaired vision. After having further conversation with the patients expressed symptoms they had been experiencing. These symptoms included feeling exhausted, disturbed sleep due to the frequent urge to pass urine at night, and weight loss without trying to. After listening to the patients’ symptoms and asking further questions. Specifically, it was a Non fasting blood test (HbA1c) that was obtained, as the doctors has a suspicion of diabetes, given the symptoms the patients were experiencing. HbA1 is a blood test used to detect diabetes. This blood test is done by taking a small amount of blood from the vein in the arm. It examines the blood sugar levels throughout the previous two to three months, indicating if the patient receiving the blood test is diabetic or not. After obtaining this blood test which confirmed the patient had type 2 diabetes and ensuring the patient was stable with no substantial injuries, the patient was referred to see a diabetic nurse. Within a few hours, the patient received the findings, which led to the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. The patient was then referred to the diabetic team. The team is then provided information on the patient, and the process of educating the patient about diabetes to avoid hospitalisation begins.

Education and prevention in monitoring diabetes
Collaboration with other healthcare professional to further assist patient needs
Supporting with lifestyle change and Mental health

This literature review will focus on the nurse’s role in responding to and caring for patients who have been newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The goal is to illustrate the importance the nurse’s role is in educating patients, bring awareness, and emphasizing the importance of prevention, which further assist with minimizing the risk of hospital admissions.

Discuss the various challenges they might face in building an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable business model and market.

Increasingly we are seeing firms adopting many different socially ‘responsible’ identities (e.g. B Corp, social enterprise, hybrid, fairtrade). In this essay you will explore those organisations that hold two or more of these designations at the same time. Using examples to illustrate your discussion address these five aspects
Select two examples, and explain what types of firms they are based on the designations above
Discuss how their missions and activities supports each of these identities and who their beneficiaries are.
Discuss the various challenges they might face in building an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable business model and market.
Discuss how we might capture and/or measure the value they create amongst different beneficiaries and what challenges this might pose.
Conclude by discussing to what extent such firms should be responsible for addressing the social and environmental issues facing society.

This assignment will be assessed using the level 5 LUBS assessment criteria. You are expected to draw on suitable literature (for instance journal articles) to support your discussions and reflections. You are also expected to illustrate with the organisational examples and reflect on these in your discussions. All materials should be suitably referenced in a consistent style

Assignments should be a maximum of 2500 words in length (excluding references).

create the initial steps of an evidence based practice project using your topic and the article you found

Write up your findings in APA format and submit them to assignment portal by the due date and time listed in your syllabus. Here’s how to write up your findings:
Start with a 7th edition APA cover page. An example is provided by the instructor. The paper itself (not including cover page and references should be six pages or less)
Paragraph #1: This is your opening paragraph. Start with an introduction statement. What is your PICO question? Describe why was it important (share the dollars, morbidity / mortality, statistics, safety stats you found with citation)? Paragraph #1 does not have a heading. You should put the title of your whole paper in the center in bold font where a heading would go. For the rest of the paragraphs, use the following headings: Summary of Research Article, Major Variables, Strengths and Weaknesses, Practice Guideline, Fourth Resource, Conclusion.
Paragraph #2: What did your nursing quantitative research article add to your knowledge on this topic? State the design. Researchers use all sorts of different terms to describe designs, but you should use one of the broad terms mentioned in our textbook (descriptive, correlational, predictive correlational, experimental, or quasi-experimental). State the sampling method (also using one of the sampling method terms discussed in your textbook), and setting of the study (this should only take one sentence: e.g. “Smith and Johnson conducted a predictive correlational study using a convenience sample from a psychiatric outpatient clinic.”). State the major findings of the study (maximum 3 findings). The findings you share should come from the results or discussion settings and should be relevant to your PICO question and your practice as a nurse.
Paragraph #3. Mention the major research variables in your article. Do not include demographic variables unless they are important to the results of the study. For each major variable, give a conceptual and operational definition (if the authors did not give a conceptual definition you can say “not given”). However, you can always say something about the operational definitions for variables because the authors must discuss the way in which variables are measured. Give the level of measurement for each variable (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio).

Paragraph #4: Using the skills you have learned in your critique of a research article, describe two strengths or two weaknesses (or one strength and one weakness) that you found as you read this article. Go back to what you learned in your article critique about sampling methods, measurement methods (ex. questionnaires), and data collection (how did they collect the data to make sure you are being thorough in your assessment. Be specific, so that your instructor, if reading the article, can find them too. Do not re-state the limitations provided by the authors of your study unless they have to do with the study’s sampling, measurement methods, or data collection. Do not discuss the research design or the descriptive or inferential statistics used by the authors as a strength or weakness of the study, as this is not related to with the study’s sampling, measurement methods, or data collection.
Paragraph #5: What is the name and of the clinical practice guideline that you found? Give a weblink and an APA citation for the guideline. Share at least three facts that you found within the guideline that is relevant to the PICO question and your practice as a BSN nurse and cite the guideline appropriately. Make sure the source you cite is actually a clinical practice guideline with advice directed toward healthcare professionals.
Paragraph #6: Identify the fourth resource you found (clinical “how-to” article, a nursing professional practice website, a systematic literature review, or a meta-analysis) that relates to your practice question. Share at least three facts that you found within this source that is relevant to the PICO question and your practice as a nurse, and cite appropriately.
Paragraph #7 (and #8 if needed): re-state your PICO question and briefly summarize what you have learned through your search. Include information from each of your sources, and be sure to cite them all. Then, give specific recommendations for nursing practice. What would you recommend, if anything, as a change in practice for nurses? Why? Remember, this is your closing paragraph(s).
Note to students about writing up your findings:
This is a formal APA paper. Look at the Rubric for more APA information for this paper.
Your paper must be between four and seven pages (double spaced). Use the following headings for paragraphs 2 through 7: Summary of Research Article, Major Variables, Strengths and Weaknesses, Practice Guideline, Fourth Resource, Conclusion. These headings should all be centered.
Don’t use first person language (I, my, we, etc.) and don’t directly address the reader (you need to, etc.).
Turn your paper (as a word document) and article (in pdf format) that you used for paragraphs 2, 3, and 4 in to the assignment submission link in Module Four at the due date and time listed in your syllabus.
Possible points for this assignment: 100 points

EBP Project – Finding the Evidence

Answer ONE of the TWO following questions
You act for Paul Quartermaine who has been arrested in connection with causing grievous bodily harm contrary to section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act

  1. You attend the police station and are provided with a summary of the alleged assault set out below:
On the night in question it is alleged that Paul Quartermaine left the “PLC” nightclub around 11.50pm having consumed 6 pints of lager. He was walking to his home when he saw his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, Rob Stanforth, coming the other way. Rob Stanforth states that he tried to walk past him and say nothing but that Paul blocked his way and provoked an argument. During the course of the argument it is alleged that Paul pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed Rob in the stomach before running away. A member of the public who was in the vicinity at the time called the police and ambulance who attended and took Rob to hospital where he had surgery to repair a damaged liver and had 27 stitches; Rob is willing to provide a statement when fit to do so. The member of the public has not made a statement and wishes to remain anonymous at this time. The hospital has confirmed Rob is likely to make a full recovery. Paul was arrested at his home address at 1.30am which was searched. Nothing was found at his home address where he lives alone and he said nothing when arrested. He was taken to Broom Valley Police Station where he was placed in detention pending interview. His clothing was seized including a t-shirt which appeared to have a blood stain on it; the knife in question has not been found. You are aware there is council CCTV in the area but the investigating officer declines to comment upon whether it has been seized and viewed at this stage.

His previous convictions are as follows:

Offence Plea Sentence Date
Battery
Section 39 Criminal
Justice Act 1988 Guilty Conditional Discharge January 2014
Criminal Damage
Section 1 Criminal
Damage Act 1971 Guilty Fine March 2016

Section 1 Theft Act 1968 Guilty Conditional Discharge December 2016
Failure to Surrender Section 6 Bail Act
1976 Guilty Fine August 2018
Battery occasioning
ABH
Section 47 Offences Against the Person
Act 1861 Not guilty Community Service
Order 12 months September 2018

Question continues on the next page

You speak to Paul in a private consultation and he tells you that he can’t remember much but what he can remember is Rob Stanforth jumping out at him from nowhere and pulling a knife on him; they had a fight and he thinks that Rob must have fallen on his own knife. All he wanted to do was get away and so he ran off – he didn’t realise Rob was injured otherwise he would have called for an ambulance himself. He thinks the blood might be Rob’s; he just didn’t notice it in his panic to get away. He tells you he has a full-time job as a plumber with a local firm and has worked there for 3 years. He lives on his own but his family live nearby. He has a three- year-old daughter from a previous relationship who lives with her mother, also nearby. He has been in trouble in the past but managed to turn his life around and has a stable relationship with his girlfriend Tessa Ullswater; they are due to be married next year. In relation to his previous for failing to surrender he tells you that this was a genuine mistake and he got the date wrong.

Answer EITHER question 1 or question 2

Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the prosecution evidence and explain all of Paul’s options in police interview taking into account the advantages and disadvantage of each option for him, and what your overall advice to him would be.

OR

Despite any advice you give to Paul he is charged under s.18, Offences Against the Person Act 1861. He is remanded in custody pending his first appearance at the magistrates’ court. The prosecution plan to apply to have Paul remanded in custody at his bail hearing. Explain what their likely arguments might be, and how you would counter their arguments, including any conditions that could be offered in order to best secure release on bail.
