- The textbook provides a definition of democracy and then points out that there are several different approaches to providing for democratic participation with the government. Based on what you have read, do you feel that the United States should be considered a democracy? Support your position using the elements of democracy found in the textbook and/or other materials you can find from legitimate sources.
- The U.S. Constitution is the result of a series of compromises, some of which seem to be contradictory to the whole. Identify at least three compromises that were part of the final constitutional design. Which of these agreements do you feel was the most important to the creation of the Constitution?
- One function of government in the United States is to provide access to transportation to businesses and citizens. Consider how the construction of roads and bridges and the maintenance of canals or waterways might look different under each of the types of federalism provided in the textbook. - Consider the roles of the President as presented by the textbook. Rank each of the roles in order of how they should be evaluated by a citizen when weighing which candidate they should vote for. Be sure to explain why you rank each role where you do.

Discuss how might large federal deficits affect future economic growth?
The U.S. governments budget has generally been in deficit since the 1960s, despite many attempts to legislate balanced budgets. Defining the government’s position appropriately raises a number of difficult issues, such as using real verses nominal budgets and cash verses capital accounting. A more important issue is the short-run verses long-run debt of the U.S. government. Adding up the total net present value of the governments promised taxes and spending shows that the U.S. government faces a major fiscal imbalance.

A HINT about Conference Discussion at the Masters Level:

Are fines enough?
Are fines enough? As dramatic as the $3 billion fine appears for GlaxoSmithKline, there are some who believe it was not enough. There are those who advocate making the consequences of misconduct harsh leading to possible jail time and that the GSK executives should have been summarily dismissed. What are your thoughts?

Fran Smith is booking with you today as her LMC at 7 weeks gestation. She is G1 P0.
Fran is attending the appointment with her partner Frank. Fran is worried because she recently went to a friend’s party and had quite a few drinks. She has found that a drink sometimes helps with her premenstrual symptoms. When her period did not arrive a month ago Fran did a pregnancy test which was positive.
