Photos must depict subjects related to agriculture or the life sciences. Be creative and seek a variety of subjects for your portfolio. Darwin Vs. Hobson

In the “Origin of Species”, by Charles Darwin, he explains the theory of Natural Selection or Survival of the Fittest. This theory states that only the strongest ones, those that can deal with changes in environment or food availability, for example, are the ones that will survive. This means that Nature is wise enough to only allow for a limited number of organisms living at a time, otherwise the Earth would be overpopulated. Darwin also explains that this theory works given random changes or variability and compares it with how men methodically select or make choices that would benefit him. Similarly, J.A. Hobson, in “Imperialism”, explains how those who are in the government take advantage and make political choices based on how these would affect them and their social and economic status, while these decisions should be based on how they would affect a nation and its people. Hebson also contrasts Darwin’s theory of evolution when he explains how men evolved from making political decisions for the good of a nation to making these decisions for their own personal good, following an impulse and not reason.  Darwin’s theory is a disadvantage for European Imperialism because it explains how whenever there is variation or changes in an environment (whether it is natural or political), changes can result that make organisms more fit to survive in this new environment. However,  in Imperialism, changes are only being made to benefit a small portion of society. For example, when the British invaded other countries and beat the natives living there, these natives might have developed (modified) ideas or ways in which they could survive despite of the intruders.

The short stories Girl by Jamaica Kincaid and The Baby Doll by Scott McClanahan have their main themes as gender norm and their effects on the youth. Kincaid writes of femininity’s expectations in the Antiguan culture from a daughter’s perspective listening to her mother’s instructions. On the other hand, McClanahan shows the burdening weight of society’s expectations of boys through a fourth-grader who dressed up like a baby doll. Both stories are defined by their culture, which shows that gender norms are more of customs than biological elements.
From a grammatical perspective, Girl is only one sentence long because Kincaid separates the mother’s series of instructions with semicolons. There are only two interruptions from the daughter when she jumps to her defense. The instructions could be from one setting or a compilation of different conversations between the mother and the daughter. From her detailed explanation of the reasons for her argument, it is clear that the mother has her daughter’s best intentions at heart “this is how to love a man, and is it does not work there are other ways, and if they don’t work don’t feel too bad about giving up” (Kincaid 2). However, she comes across as condescending and insulting, especially when she constantly refers to her daughter as a slut.
The mother?s advice is practical and helpful to the daughter if she wishes to become a key member of society. From her detailed instructions, one can extrapolate that domestic prowess was a woman’s legacy and a respectable daughter was a mother’s. The story is not only a conversation between the particular mother and daughter. It represents conversations between mothers and their daughter through generations in the culture, and the mother in the story expected the daughter to have it with her own when the time comes. Read The Gift of the Magi for a comparison. The mother’s advice to her daughter is based on the societal place of the woman. For starters, a woman is only important to society if she is a wife. Most of the instructions are on performing wifely duties “wash the white clothes on Monday and put them on the stone heap” (Kincaid 1). The family is also a key factor in the projection of gender norms. The daughter is expected to practice these duties at her home “this is how you iron your father’s khaki shirt so that it does not have a crease” (Kincaid 1). Her sweeping and cooking chores are also likely performed at her parent’s house before moving to her matrimonial home.
Another key factor of a woman is her sexuality. It walks hand in hand with the value of a woman’s virginity before marriage. The mother teaches her how to hem a skirt not to become the slut she is apparently bent on becoming. The mother calls her out on several inappropriate sexual behaviors, such as singing cultural songs on Sunday school. She tells her to walk like a lady and not talk to boys even if only giving directions. Although her phrasing of words is insulting, the mother only wants to protect her daughter’s sexuality and, consequently, her place in the community. Her advice ranges from house chores to how to relate with other people, whether or not the daughter likes them. In that long sentence, the mother is imparting the culture of the community onto her daughter.
The Baby Doll addresses the same idea of gender expectation but using different writing styles. Although the story is mainly about what is expected from a man, it is intertwined with femininity expectations. It shows how disgraceful it becomes when anyone crosses these gender boundaries. McClanahan names his protagonist after himself, probably because it an experience he went through. The young Scott was too na‹ve and honest to see the problem in dressing up like a baby doll. At his age, “[he] knew you had to be careful doing these kinds of things” (McClanahan 2) because he had once seen the disapproval on his uncles’ faces when he got a Barbie for his birthday. Another comparison is found in Animal Farm writing examples.
Like the mother in Girl who reminded the daughter that she was not a boy, teases and blatant disapprovals reminded Scott that he was not a girl. It is a shameful thing in both societies to cross gender boundaries. Parents and students alike made fun of Scott’s costume because “it’s a boy dressed up as a girl” (McClanahan 6). Similarly, the mother made sure the daughter knew that certain games were for boys “don’t squat to play marbles-you are not a boy, you know” (Kincaid 2). Both societies believe that it is the parents’ job to guide children to their respective gender customs. While it may be interpreted that the mother was supportive of individual decisions that cross gender boundaries, her intentions were somewhat selfish “I always wanted a girl” (McClanahan 8). However, the father, like Scott’s uncles, was openly against it, “My dad shook his head with another “That boy’s not right.”” (McClanahan 5). Similarly, the mother in Girl took it upon herself to reprimand the daughter’s boyish behaviors before they manifested into something disgraceful. In that vein, both stories highlight parents’ poor communication skills in correcting their children’s mistakes. It leaves the children more broken than fixed, yet the parents seem to be completely oblivious.
The two stories shed light on how society views genders and the flaws that come with such views. Aside from that, they indirectly address sexuality and parenting issues and how they apply to the respective genders.

The lesson is clear: No matter the obstacles, there will always be people (and cargo) who will fly.
Airlines have added a number of very long international flights to schedules in December, a sign of resilience and necessity in air travel. Some of the new flights are a result of increased holiday travel and cargo demand in key cities. Many will have small passenger loads — 30 or 40 people on a wide-body jet. But with the right cargo load, that’s enough to at least break even on many trips, airlines say.
That also could mean nine, 12, even 18 hours in an enclosed space in the middle of the pandemic, a choice many would-be fliers have avoided. Robust ventilation and air filtration in cabins does reduce, but not eliminate, viral transmission risk. Even with the risks, quarantines and restrictions, the increased flying just shows that there will always be people who need to go.
“Air service is critical. People want to travel — even with a 14-day quarantine, even with all the testing — and these vital travel lanes are key to having those connections,” says Patrick Quayle, vice president of international network and alliances at United.
The number of scheduled passenger flights at least 3,400 miles long — New York-London is 3,451 miles — jumped 23% to 32,317 world-wide in December compared with November, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. December schedules still had 70% fewer flights than December 2019, but the number of flights scheduled was three times as many as the May low for long-haul international trips.
Many countries limit entry to citizens, legal residents or people who get special permission from government agencies. Many require a 14-day quarantine or a negative Covid-19 test. It’s best to check the requirements at the website of the U.S. Embassy of a particular country, or at the U.S. State Department’s travel information page.
Airlines say international passengers typically boil down to dual citizens and legal residents, government officials, health-care officials and family members flying to see dying relatives or attend weddings or other gatherings. The global diaspora of workers has created more demand for air travel even in the pandemic.
“There are still millions of people who have not been able to reunite with their friends and families,” says Mark Drusch, senior vice president of revenue management at Qatar Airways.
Qatar has been somewhat opportunistic during the pandemic, maintaining flights to 30 destinations and actually adding several new cities, including San Francisco. On Tuesday, Qatar announced it will start flying from Doha to Seattle in March — the airline’s 11th U.S. city.
Australia has some of the strictest requirements for travel. It requires 14-day quarantines in a government-designated facility, and inbound flights have restrictions on passenger load based on availability of quarantine beds.
Qantas, Australia’s flag carrier, suspended all international flights except to New Zealand because of government restrictions. But United kept going with a daily trip between San Francisco and Sydney. It has been the only airline that never stopped flying between the Americas and Australia.
Mr. Quayle says each United flight is limited to about 35 to 40 passengers, based on available government quarantine capacity. The airline is flying to Australia with a 250-seat Boeing 787. Cargo helps cover a lot of the cost of operating the trip, and with that, those few passengers are enough to make the trip worthwhile.
United added Los Angeles-Sydney flights to its schedule this fall. So did American and Delta.
Singapore Airlines, which has been flying to San Francisco and Los Angeles despite restrictions on who can enter Singapore, restarted the longest flight in the world in November — a nonstop between Singapore and New York.
There are also an average of 26 flights a day in each direction between the U.S. and London.
British Airways is flying to 12 U.S. cities, down from 22 in December 2019 but still considerable given the pandemic. And Virgin Atlantic is flying more than half its normal December schedule to the U.S., reaching Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.
Lufthansa, which flies to 11 U.S. cities, half of what it used to serve, says it evaluates flights each month and drops any that won’t be profitable based on expected cargo and passenger revenue. It helps that fuel prices are low.
The airline is using smaller planes for formerly busy routes, switching a jumbo with 509 seats for a plane with 279 seats, for example, and sometimes flying only two or three days a week instead of daily, says Larry Ryan, Lufthansa’s senior director of sales in the U.S. He says the reduced number of seats each week more closely matches demand.
“It’s very much hit and miss,” he says.
Many passengers are flying to family in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, he says.
“Presently Africa is playing a tremendous role in Lufthansa’s long-haul revenue overall, which it never would have played in the past,” Mr. Ryan says.
Nigeria closed its borders for a long period, then opened up to a few flights a week beginning the first week of December. That sparked a rush of corporate passengers, as well as Nigerians living in the U.S., Mr. Ryan says.
United is flying to Frankfurt from six U.S. hubs — the same number as last year — and Mr. Quayle says 70% of passengers are connecting from there. Before the pandemic, travelers could fly nonstop to many more cities in Europe and beyond. Now, to get to Rome or Prague on United, they must connect in Frankfurt to Lufthansa.
Airline executives expect a drop in long international flights in January — some of this surge is based on December holiday traffic. But some expansion will continue next year, too.

Ronald Weitzer presents insightful research and analysis of issues revolving around prostitution and sex trafficking, thereby drawing exciting conclusions. From the articles, there are vital lessons that every student and readers can draw, which have the potential to elevate an individual?s conceptualization of the concept. Sex work usually entails the exchange of sexual services, performances, and or material compensation rather than based on satisfying emotions arising from the love between the partners.  Therefore, there are several lessons that I learned from the readings.        One of the vital lessons concerning sex work regards the universality of the practice, which seems to cut across every social class. Weitzer reveals that even the most prominent of government officials at some point have been receivers of the services although their position of the debate may seem to contradict and campaign for the abolition of the practice (Weitzer, 2009). For instance, Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) was part of the prominent leaders who depicted the hypocritical behavior by condemning the practice but receiving the services of the exclusive Emperor?s Club agency and Wicked Models, which are escort agencies. Besides, Senator David Vitter, among others, also had an association with escort agencies thereby proving the reality of sex work and prostitution even among the elites in the society (Weitzer, 2009).        It also came to my understanding that sex work is so lucrative that people spend significant amounts of money in the business. Weitzer alludes that the industry realized $13.3 billion on X-rated magazines, DVDs, and live sex shows among other sex-related programs just in 2006 (Weitzer, 2009). Besides, he affirms that the industry realized tremendous progress in just a single decade with a double in the number of X-rated films and literature. Legal commercialization of sex thus is a force to reckon in economic aspects of the society, thereby creating a perception that much more could be happening and people spend more that never appear to the limelight.       Moreover, the points raised by the moral crusaders, although may seem baseless, are critical in the quest to understand the moral influence of the sex industry (Weitzer, 2007). According to these individuals, sex work is to blame for the rise in sex trafficking, places the lives of young, innocent children in danger of sexual abuse. Children exposed to explicit sexual practice often do not live to realize their dreams since because of the psychological and moral influence of such practices. This backs the claim that prostitution is generally evil since it replaces the need for love, particularly romantic in nurturing and building of relationships.       Conversely, I also realized from the articles that there is no empirical proof of the causal relationship between prostitution and trafficking. However, the legalization of one makes the other a possibility since the level of exposure to such practices significantly rises compared to cases where both trafficking and prostitution are illegal (Weitzer, 2007). Notwithstanding, I also learned that although when it comes to sex work, people typically think about prostitution, there are other types of sex work, which seems to thrive thereby enhancing the dynamism experienced in this industries. I learned the several problems and the negative influence of moral crusades and different paradigms and policies for sex industry.Moral crusades only focus on the most shocking horror stories of victims and recount their plight to exaggerate the problem. They tend to exclude gray areas and believe the existence of a particular evil (Ronald Weitzer, 2007: 448). Moral crusades cast lots of wrong and glib claims. For example, they regard prostitution itself, customers and traffickers are evil. Also, in their view, violence prevails in prostitution and sex trafficking. These ideas are biased opinions and lack of evidence.  Moral crusades ignore many certain conditions and despite the more abominable outcome of their proposal. Legal prostitution might lead to the decrease of trafficking since the government and legal sectors arrange it in an orderly way. Inversely, traffickers might control and oppress migrants by law threats, if commercial sex work is illegal (Ronald Weitzer, 2007:457). Also, some findings verify that there is no apparent correlation between pornography and sex crime after other variables are included and even some show a decrease of sexual violence as the increased availability of pornography.
