Discuss how your core values inform or influence your perspective on your selected social issue.

Instructions
Case Study Project
(first draft and revised draft)
Overview
For this final project you will continue with the social issue that you selected (language and power; freedom and security; health and wealth) and you will write an essay where you discuss your perspective. You will use the ideas and information from the summary-response and the quote log to write your case study. You will submit a first draft and a revised draft of this assignment.
Content
⦁ Describe a “real life” instance of your selected social issue in a professional or a personal setting.
⦁ Discuss your perspective on your selected social issue, including the reasons for your viewpoint.
⦁ Discuss how your core values inform or influence your perspective on your selected social issue.
⦁ Demonstrate that you are really thinking about your issue—don’t settle for easy answers, don’t pretend that conflicting evidence doesn’t exist, and don’t feel that you have to take an either-or position.
⦁ Discuss the complexities of your selected social issue. For example, do not just conclude that using academic language is always good, or that government surveillance is always bad, or that wealth automatically leads to health. Think about the intricacies of these issues and how they play out in everyday life.
Organization
⦁ Include an introductory paragraph, where you clearly outline a “real-life” instance of your social issue and you give a thesis statement that indicates your perspective (see ⦁ Part 2: Writing Your Introduction for an example).
⦁ Include three body paragraphs where you include details, examples, and quotes from at least three of the course readings to help you develop and support your key points (see ⦁ Part 3: Writing Your Body Paragraphs. for an example).
⦁ Include one body paragraph where you discuss how your core values inform or influence your perspective on your selected social issue (see ⦁ Part 3: Writing Your Body Paragraphs. for an example).
⦁ End your essay with a concluding paragraph where you restate your thesis, summarize your key points, and leave the reader with the “so what?” ( see ⦁ Part 4: Writing Your Conclusion for an example).
Grammar and Mechanics
⦁ Your paper should be written according to the standards for academic writing, with attention to the following:
⦁ punctuation: this includes things such as use of commas, colons, and apostrophes.
⦁ word-level accuracy: this includes things such as capitalization, spelling, word-tense, and usage.
⦁ sentence-level accuracy: this includes things such as sentence boundaries, subject-verb agreement, and pronoun-antecedent agreement.
⦁ Take time to proofread after you’ve written your essay. Think about your own writing habits you might want to change  (like using “text-speak” or sentence fragments) and watch out for those. Reading your paper aloud is a good way to catch any mistakes.
Sources and Documentation
⦁ You are required to use three sources for this assignment. Your sources should be selected from the assigned course readings on your selected issue (language and power; freedom and security; health and wealth).
⦁ Your paper should use APA-style documentation for in-text citations. You do not need to complete a reference page.
Format and Length
⦁ At the top of the page, include your name, the assignment name, and a title that reflects your specific essay focus. (See example below.)
⦁ Your paper should be typed, double-spaced and in 12-point font.
⦁ Your final product should be a minimum of six paragraphs (about 900-1100 words) in length. However, the quality of the content of this essay is most important. Be sure to fully answer the prompt.
Sample Name and Title for Top of Page

Case Study Project, first draft (assignment name)
Education Doesn’t Mean Empowerment (title)
Sample Case Study Project
Be sure to review this Sample Case Study before you begin. The student sample includes notes to help with connections to key aspects of the assignment.
Due Date and Grade Percentage
The first draft of this project is due by the end of Week 6. The first draft is ungraded, but you will receive valuable feedback from your instructor.
The revised draft is due by the end of Week 8. The revised draft of this project is worth 30% of your final course grade.
Connection to other Course Assignments
⦁ This is the culminating assignment, where you will tie together all of the information and ideas from the course.
⦁ All of the reading, writing, thinking, and discussing that you have done over the past several weeks have led up to this assignment.

Explain market failure in terms of misallocation of resources, social efficiency and welfare loss, using a diagram.

MAIN BODY

Each paragraph should make a different point.
Quotes should not be used to make your point; this is poor academic practice and the passage should be paraphrased. Quotes should only ever be used to support a point you have already made.
Diagrams are required for at least two of the examples of government intervention to correct market failure e.g. tax on a negative externality of consumption caused by a demerit good; producer subsidy to increase consumption of a merit good.
All diagrams must be sourced and explained within the essay.
To source a diagram or chart you need to put:
Author’s/authors’ family name/names, year of publication of the source and page number E.g. Gillespie (2019:23), Mankiw and Taylor (2017:56)
Theory (25%)

  • Explain market failure in terms of misallocation of resources, social efficiency and
welfare loss, using a diagram. (8 marks)
  • Explain government intervention – why governments intervene and how
governments intervene, the effect on the functioning of markets. (8 marks)
  • Explain government failure and at least three causes e.g. distortion of price
signals, unintended consequences, imperfect information, rent seeking behaviour,
public choice theory, moral hazard, regulatory capture, using a diagram where
    appropriate. (9 marks)
This section must not be any more than 400 words.

Use three researched examples from a country of your a choice 45% (3 x 15%).
The interventions should have occurred after the year 2000.
Each government intervention must be a different type e.g. regulation, tax, new law, subsidy, quota,
information campaign. Each example must show evidence of government failure.
Evaluate the outcomes of the interventions in terms of government failure.
– State what the example is e.g. subsidy to encourage the employment of 18-21 year
olds in UK.

  • Briefly explain the economic theory of each example (type of market failure with diagram).
  • Explain the aim of the intervention and the nature of the intervention, using a
diagram. The market failure and the intervention may be shown on the same diagram.
  • Evaluate the benefits and costs of the intervention in terms of government failure.
The focus must be on government failure caused by the intervention and its consequences, which may be long term.
Each example is of equal weight and should by approximately 250 words in length.
This section should be approximately 750 words.

MY first example is the living wage ( price control) which introduced in 2016 I have a special diagram from gilespie ( page 183) for that

good because…
Or something similar

Reference LIST

Make sure you include a Harvard Reference List at the end of your essay. All sources listed in the Harvard reference list must be cited in the essay; this will be checked. The Reference List should be
on a new page
created using the Harvard referencing system as used in EAP
https://library.leeds.ac.uk/referencing-examples/9/leeds-harvard
in alphabetical order by the family names of the author or authors example:

Swot Analysis- Include information for Generic UK NHS Trusts in finance.

Personal Experience: (1500 words):

Keep the transferable skills brief and skills development brief. Do not overcomplicate.
Use theories that are relevant online accessible modern academic resources for skill development.
Reflect on previously what I wrote to show skill development. Use examples from my role and PDP if needed.
Difficulties (in have mentioned briefly in my rewriting work.)- 1. Adjusting to office environment, working with professional accountants (finding that intimidating. Confidence to speak up during meetings etc. 2. Learning accounting software’s- initially struggled with this as I was very unfamiliar with this and had to learn quickly so that I could help my team during busy times. (accounting softwares are agresso. ),
Communication-
Use a theory relating to communication-
Talk about how it relates to skill development-
At the beginning of the placement- Really struggled to talk with other about my work and struggled to ask questions when stuck. Eventually being able to display information clearly and concisely through emails as well meetings during budget review and daily morning meetings. (verbally). Learnt techniques and methods to improve communication for example planning what to say before I say it. etc
By the end, evidently, I have improved, I now able to communicate to my team and other very easily and confidently. My social anxiety has improved. Got involved in volunteering. Asked for feedback from others after presentations and meeting which allowed me to see from third perspective.etc
Refer to PDP
Problem solving
Use theory relating to Problem Solving

Some ideas to talk about:

At the beginning of my placement, I had very limited knowledge about finance therefore I could not problem solve a situation. The more time I spent on each team the more I realised how similar they were. Therefore, I was able to implement my knowledge when moving to the next team.
Creating a report where the figures were incorrect or when the financial position was incorrect therefore I had to either find the correct information or create a journal to fix it. Also, when member of my teams was struggling with workload I would to help them and complete some of their tasks that had deadlines. Etc.

Teamwork

Use theory relating teamwork

Some ideas to talk about:

Working in a team was very new for me as I had never worked with one in office environment. I have worked at university. However never in a financial environment. Therefore, seeing how all divisions linked was intimidating. My team already knew everyone and being introduced to everyone was overwhelming and daunting.
However, it got easier once became more familiar with everyone.

Leadership
Use theory relating leadership
Some ideas:
Leadership- really had no experience in leadership previously. Eventually as I became more confident, I was able to become indirect leader. For example, volunteering onwards. I was one of the first to volunteer which subsequently led a lot of people in the office being encouraged to volunteer at lunch time themselves. The skill development is evident here. (expand on this)

Networking

Use theory relating to Networking
working in the placement encouraged me to develop my social skills. I suffer from social anxiety which made this very difficult for me. Throughout the placement, I became more comfortable talking to others about any problems I had. Was able to have easy going conversations with seniors members in the finance department. Reference PDP and Rating Report

Goals to the department
Both divisions
Help them with month end deadline and invoicing deadlines.
Organise meetings and catch ups to get work completed.
Help with the financial in budget reviews
Liaise with other teams so that deadlines were met.
Expand on thes and use example

How has the placement changed your thinking about the relationship between academic interests and the working environment?
Dealing with huge amounts of financial information better. Not overwhelmed
Help me with my academics more in final year of university as I have real experience working in a finance industry.
Now able to know what I like to specialise in and would like to work more in management accounts. Develop further.
Think it is very important.

How have you grown intellectually and professionally as a result of the placement?
Professionally- the way I communicate and liase with budget holders and manager, writing emails, the way I approach my work, how I treat my co-workers.
Intellectually- become more better, able to deal with large workloads, learn as I go along, find out more about how I work and what I need to improve on, gain more knowledge by attending training sessions and speaking to others about finance. Learning what works for me.

how were you challenged in the course of the work placement and how did you resolve any difficulties?
Beginning of the placement, I found it very challenging and intimidating- very limited knowledge of finance and no experience working in professional environment. (Expand on this)- the journey from the beginning to now. I have improved immensely from then, I am more confident in the work I am given and no longer feel intimidated by work or become stressed. Now where to look and how find information that I need to use. (note: you can use what I have written in my role for examples)
Joining a new team/rotation halfway the placement. Transition was difficult as most of the training was done online. initially was difficult because I had learnt their processes and my tasks were different which I enjoyed once I understood what to do and why they are used. (give an example of this) Working with new individuals. Eventually became very well integrated with the team.
Networking- working in the placement encouraged me to develop my social skills. I suffer from social anxiety which made this very difficult for me. Throughout the placement, I became more comfortable talking to others about any problems I had. Was able to have easy going conversations with senior in the finance department.
Technology- initially my laptop was not working nor were the applications. Made several trips to the office in order to resolve this. Made several appointments with IT team to resolve this. Was able to get a new laptop. Even after getting a new laptop there were issues with the programming. IT technician eventually came fixed it.
(what would I have done differently with hindsight). Been more prepared and spoken out more. Been more direct with people and tell others that I wanted to be more involved in tasks and meetings.

× How can I help you?
