Using semiotics approach, analyse an advertisement of your choice from any part of the world.

Global Advertising and Brand Promotion

The assessment is an essay assignment which accounts for 50% of the mark awarded for the MKT3006 module.

Total word count: 2,000 words (+/- 10%) excluding references and appendices.

Assignment Topic

Using semiotics approach, analyse an advertisement of your choice from any part of the world.

Assignment guidance

  1. Presentation. Your work should take the form of a 2,000 word (+/- 10%) essay assignment.

The assignment should be word processed. All pages should be numbered. Use headings and sub-headings appropriately to make clear the structure of your essay. You do not need to include table of contents.

Interpretation of word limits
Your work must comply with the assessment word limit +/- 10% (excluding references, bibliography and appendices). Work that does not comply will not be marked. You MUST include a word count on the front of your essay.

⦁ Submit an electronic copy of your assignment, using Turnitin.
⦁ The font size must be size 12, with double spacing.
⦁ Margins to be 2.54cm

  1. Referencing. You should demonstrate your reading in the subject area in your work through reference to work from appropriate sources such as journals, books, reports etc. THESE MUST BE CLEARLY REFERENCED IN YOUR ESSAY USING THE HARVARD AT NEWCASTLE STYLE GUIDE. Do not simply regurgitate diagrams or extensive general information from the textbooks or articles. You should assume that we know the workings of basic theoretical or analytical models and will allocate marks for the way you apply them to the question and use them to support a line of argument that helps you to answer the question. Where you use direct quotations or show diagrams, try to keep them short and ensure that they make a direct and clear contribution to your argument. All direct quotations MUST be clearly cited with a page number.
  2. Graphics. Use diagrams and brief tables if appropriate to illustrate points and to support your arguments. Ensure that these are relevant, based on your reading, and that their significance to your argument is clear.
  3. Appendices. You may attach appendices to your work which will not be included in the word-count. Appendices may include, for example, certain tables or analyses, the conclusions or part of which you have included in the main text. They should not include any information that is essential to your argument, nor should they act as a ‘dumping ground’ for information with which you do not know what to do. Just as appendices do not influence the word count, so they will not affect the mark you are awarded for the work.
  4. Plagiarism
The assignment should be your own work. Please note the advice on cheating, plagiarism and referencing available in your programme handbook.
Further advice on plagiarism and referencing is available from the following web sources:
    https://libguides.ncl.ac.uk/managing/how_to_reference
    https://www.stir.ac.uk/media/stirling/services/academic-registry/documents/book-of-plagiarism.pdf

Assignment hand-in date

Please note that you have only one attempt at submitting your work through TurnItIn. You will not receive a confirmation email, but you can see the status of your submission on TurnitIn/Canvas.

Pre-assessment and post-assessment support

There will be two online Zoom pre-assessment clinics organised before assignment hand-in date, and a post-assessment clinic organised once students receive their individual marks and feedback.

Suggested essay structure

⦁ Introduction, brief discussion of semiotic analysis approach
⦁ Introduction of the advertisement (including a screenshot/picture of the advertisement)
⦁ Analysis of the advertisement using semiotics
⦁ Reflection on the limitations of the approach
⦁ Conclusion

Please note that: References, appendices, tables and figures etc. ARE NOT part of the overall word count! References in text such as (Smith, 2020) ARE part of the word count.

If you have any questions regarding the assignment, please be encouraged to post them in the discussion board that is specifically dedicated to the assignment-related questions, or raise them in one of our in-person lectures, or optional Zoom pre-assessment clinics/Q&A sessions.

Yes or no, are ESG metrics philosophically and politically neutral? Do they correspond to all of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching?

The topic of this research paper is: Environmental, Social, and Governance ratings. This is a controversial political, social, and religious issue, but for the purpose of this paper I would like to analyze as a business issue.
This is a controversial issue because it gets at who we are as people and what human flourishing look like. One can really only answer these questions if one has an idea about human nature and a developed robust Anthropology. ESG ratings claim to be neutral and support obvious goals for society.
Please compose a 5 page paper on:
Part 1. Yes or no, are ESG metrics philosophically and politically neutral? Do they correspond to all of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching?
Your paper must analyze the precise ESG metrics.
You will need to consider the various principles of Catholic Social Teaching and evaluate which you think best help(s) to answer this problem. (You may also include why you think any other approach outlined in the textbook that would be helpful).
How would a more robust vision of ESG change in light of the principles of CST?
Part 2 – Practical Problem: One of the parts of ESG is to develop a strong understanding of who stakeholders are – this includes workers, communities, customers, the environment, as well as shareholders.
One defense of the Twitter Board of Directors decision to rebuff the hostile takeover by Elon Musk has been made in light of an ESG compatible vision of stakeholders. Namely, that it would be irresponsible to the community (of the world?) as a whole to allow the free speech that Musk has touted. Moreover, such a shift in philosophy supported by Musk would negatively impact workers at Twitter who are distressed at the social/political positions that Musk allegedly advocates.  So, the argument goes, despite an obviously robust evaluation of the company that would serve the shareholders well, the Board is in fact acting more responsibly by thwarting Musk and putting limitations on the amount of stock one person can own.
Do you think this is a legitimate application of ESG by Twitter?

The Global Environment of Business
Term Project
Objective
The objective of the term project is to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply the
body of knowledge covered in this course. The focus will be on identifying a potential
international business initiative and conducting a comprehensive business feasibility study for
that venture.
Nature of Activities
The term project gives students the opportunity to apply the concepts and strategies learned
throughout the course towards the analysis of an international business initiative. The deliverable
is a feasibility study for entering a new market. This can be done for a new product line or for an
existing product line expanding into a new country. Students should take the following steps to
complete this project:

  1. Select a company that has expanded or is planning to expand into international markets. The
company you choose could be a small firm, a medium multi-national, or a foreign-based
firm. Analyze the situation that the existing firm currently faces and what factors give rise to
the need or opportunity for a strategic international move. Your analysis should consider the
    following:
    • Brief overview of the company (i.e., company history, products and services, number of
    employees, annual revenues/sales).
    • Analysis of the company’s key success factors. Discuss challenges, obstacles, and
failures and what the firm did to overcome them.
    • Analysis of its international strategy. What was the motive for expanding into foreign
markets and what strategy was pursued?
  2. Select a country that provides this company potential opportunities of doing business
there. Analyze the kinds of challenges specific to that country that your company would
face. This can be done by researching publicly available information and interviewing
managers or executives who have lived overseas or traveled extensively. Specifically, your
research should address the following issues:
o Brief overview of the country & demographics.
o What recent developments are taking place in that country that would affect international
    business?
o What are the social, political, cultural, religious, environmental, and economic issues and
    challenges?
o Specific regional trade agreements and its affects of doing business in that country.
o Evaluate the investment climate of the country (i.e., GDP, inflation rate, exchange rate,
barriers to entry such as tariffs, quotas, etc.)
o Infrastructure and its level of sophistication (i.e., roads/highways, information
technology, access to internet) and its impact on trade and business.
  3. Would you recommend doing business in that country and why? Specifically, your
    recommendation should address the following:
o Rationale for the proposed strategy, along with a range of possible courses of action
o Recommended method of entry (e.g., though an acquisition, a new operation, a joint
marketing venture or with some other strategy)
  4. Complete business feasibility study document. The final term paper should include the
    following key elements:
    o Company profile
    o Country profile
o Business objectives of this specific international initiative
    o SWOT analysis
o Assessment of benefits, costs, risks, and financial projections of this international
    business initiative
    o Assessment of the competition
o Recommended strategies and tactics (e.g., marketing plan, organizational plan, and local
    operations/partnership)
