What is the “American dream?”

The reflections will need to reflect your understanding of the time period and need to avoid being anachronistic. (Remember that this term loosely means to apply today’s values or perspectives on the past.)

To accomplish this, you will need to write both reflections as if you are a first generation immigrant (in the first person). Your first reflection entry needs to be from the viewpoint of an immigrant from Europe (e.g., Ireland, Italy, Germany, England, or France). Your second reflection entry needs to come from the standpoint of an immigrant from Asia (e.g., China or Japan).

You will need to develop an argument within both reflections entries based on the bulleted items below. In your own words, justify academically the side of the argument you choose, remembering to cite your sources along the way.

Part 1

 Are you treated as an equal by earlier generations residing here?

– What are others’ attitudes toward you?

-Why do you think they act this way?

 Would you feel pressured to pledge your loyalty to a political machine?

 Would you agree to engage in a strike?

 Talk about some leisure opportunities and how they are divided by race or class or are for everyone.

Part 2  What is the “American dream?”

 How did the growth of big business impact the American dream?

 Explain which leisure opportunities could be part of the American dream.

 What part did the anti-immigration sentiment play in the American dream?

As this is a point of view essay, a modern perspective will not accurately address what the question is asking for. It is strongly suggested that you use at least one selection from the America: History and Life with Full Text database within the CSU Online Library. All sources used, including textbooks, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying APA citations.

Business Ethics: A Stakeholder and Issues Management Approach

Weiss, Joseph W

Is third world immigration a threat to america’s way of life?

Through the course we have read about how social forces influence and change our lives. Living in the South Florida area brings us into very direct and intense contact with one of the social forces shaping the economic, political, and cultural landscape of the United States: immigration.  Some see immigrants as the natural product of a society that proposes to be a “land of opportunity;” others see contemporary immigrants as a threat to the U.S. social fiber. It would be  a short (750-800 words) essay expressing your views on the issue. Keep it tight and focused.

Briefly explain how and what the organization can or should do to cease and desist this type of behavior and correct and/or make restitution for the situation and for anyone harmed.

your work experience of fraud and/or organizational corruption that you experienced or observed in their organization.  (This can be from a volunteer organization if the student has not had a paid employment position.)  If a student truly cannot provide an example of “fraud and/or organizational corruption” he/she may describe an example that demonstrates an issue of ethics that could even perhaps be borderline unethical, fraudulent, or corrupt.

Briefly describe each example.

Using chapter 12 terminology and concepts, constitutes or could constitute fraud and/or organizational corruption (or unethical behavior or situations).

Using chapter concepts, briefly explain how and what the organization can or should do to cease and desist this type of behavior and correct and/or make restitution for the situation and for anyone harmed.

You cannot receive full credit for number of postings if your contributions were insignificant, without reasoning, or showed little effort. Answer the following questions in your discussion.

Discussion questions (you must answer all parts of each question):

1. Suppose you are a manager at a low-budget healthcare setting, such as a local health department. How will you recruit new staff and motivate current employees when competitors in the area are able to pay 30 to 40 percent more than your organization can?

2. Suppose you are a staff nurse in a hospital that uses an incentive compensation system. Do you have an obligation to disclose the nature of the compensation arrangement with patients? If so, how should this information be communicated, and by whom?

3. How will you design a team-based compensation system such that free riders on the team cannot take advantage of the system?

4. For a four-person surgical group, what kind of formula may be devised to fairly and consistently measure and reward productivity? What changes may be needed if one surgeon decides to perform more office work and less surgery?

What different divine/human relationships can we identify?

Overview:

This discussion aims to explore the different divine/human relationships in two South American and two North American cultures.  What different divine/human relationships can we identify?  To what extent do gods control humans?

Instructions:

In the Aymaran Myth “The Creation,” Viracocha makes his 2nd creations complete – there seem to be no questions about their futures and what roles each will play.  The sun god in the Aztec myth sends his children to teach the people how to make their own lives better?  Consider carefully the historical introductions to these myths!  Can the Children of the Sun be seen to show divine superiority to Viracocha?

Compare to the the Navajo and Mic myths.  What place do gods or divine entities seem to play in these myths?  Does nature seem to play any “divine” role?  Do they seem to demand payment or recognition like others? Please cite specific episodes from the story.

What are the salient situational factors?

You are Philip Manual, the head of sales for an office products firm, Phelps, Inc. Your personnel sell primarily to small businesses in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area. Phelps is doing about average for this rapidly growing market. The firm’s new president, Jose Ortega, is putting a lot of pressure on you to increase sales. You feel that a major obstacle is the firm’s policy on extending credit. Celeste, the head of the credit office, insists that all new customers fill out an extensive credit application. Credit risks must be low; credit terms and collection procedures are tough. You can appreciate her point of view, but you feel it’s unrealistic. Your competitors are much more lenient in their credit examinations; they extend credit to higher credit risks; their credit terms are more favorable; and they are more lenient in collecting overdue payments. Your sales personnel are pushing back on you. They frequently complain that they aren’t playing on a “level field” with their competition. When you brought this concern to Jose, he said he wanted you and Celeste to “work things out”. His instructions didn’t give any clues to his priorities on this matter “Sure, we need to increase sales, but the small business failure in this area is the highest in the country, so we have to be careful that we don’t make bad credit decisions.”

Respond to the following questions in detail:

  1. What are the salient situational factors?
  2. What is the most appropriate negotiation strategy? Explain in detail.
  3. What advice would you offer to Jose Ortega? to Celeste? to Philip
Why were the Iroquis so violent with hurting the Englishmen?

Your papers will focus on one literary work or one author.  They will consider one aspect of the text (literary form or style, relevant social, cultural or political issues and ideas, etc.) within its social/historical context. You will consult two scholarly articles for this paper.  Neither scholarly article will discuss the work of the author you choose! My research paper will be on, from The Relation of 1647, by Father Jerome Lalemant.  The story depicts the horrible pain and journey that Father Jogues has been through from his enslavement with the Iroqois.  The question that I have and hopefully find the answer within my research paper; Why were the Iroquis so violent with hurting the Englishmen? Why didn’t they see them as an asset to help them better there tribe like some of the other tribes did. Was it base of there religion/believe or because of the ethnic difference that made the become so violent to the Englishmen? I may never find the truth answer but I will find A answer to these questions I have.
