The Joint Commission

The Joint Commission, or simply “TJC,” is an organization formed to accredit medical facilities. It is a private organization composed of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, risk managers, and other professionals. The main concern of TJC is patient safety. The Joint Commission Accreditation is voluntary. However, CMS states that, in order to receive reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid, a health care provider must have completed the accreditation survey and be approved by The Joint Commission. Typically, TJC will visit every 18-24 months to ensure compliance.

HIM Professionals should be aware of what TJC evaluates to accredit a medical facility, because he/she may be called upon to provide needed information or otherwise assist in a TJC audit.

Suppose you worked at a medical facility and were given the assignment to prepare the facility for a Joint Commission audit. Watch the video on the TJC again, and download and view the TJC Readiness Checklist.Preview the document

A patient came to Dr. Bayberry’s office. She was diagnosed with pneumonia. She was given an antibiotic injection. Before the injection, she was asked the appropriate questions and denied having any allergies to medications. The medical assistant had the patient wait the allowed 15 minutes, and there was no visible adverse reaction. The patient was released to go home with her daughter. Five minutes after leaving the office, the daughter came back in a panic: the patient was unconscious in the car. Dr. Bayberry and the medical assistant went to the car to find that the patient had gone into cardiac arrest. EMS was called and the doctor and medical assistant did CPR until they arrived.

In this week’s discussion I ask you to find and summarize four published studies (two where the ACA has been beneficial and two where the ACA has been a negative).

The Affordable Care Act has provided many benefits to Americans. For example, in a recent article in The Nation’s Health, the American Public Health Associations newsletter, they highlighted a story of a man looking to obtain insurance for his family and with some convincing himself as well. With his new coverage he went in for his first physical in over twenty years, upon examination they found that he had colon cancer. Fortunately, with new insurance in hand he was able to receive the needed treatment and now has a very health prognosis ahead of him. While there are countless stories of people being helped by the Affordable Care Act, there are also countless stories about individuals falling through coverage or income gaps and being forced to live without insurance.

  • In this week’s discussion I ask you to find and summarize four published studies (two where the ACA has been beneficial and two where the ACA has been a negative). When finding the negative make certain that it is the fault of the ACA policy, not simply an individual who would have been without coverage prior to the passing of the ACA
Discuss three cultural traditions and/or expectations African women experience

Read first chapter of The Emancipation of Women, “Traditional Practices”

Africa is a huge continent so we cannot make any generalizations about all women in Africa — if we went to the continent we would find modern cities, remote and impoverished villages and everything in between those two extremes. The reading provided for this module is by Dr. Florence Abena Dolphyne, a linguist from Ghana who gives a broad outline in this chapter of some of the cultural traditions and expectations for many parts of Africa. Her book was first published in 1991 and has been updated several times — the version you are reading is from 2008. While there have been a few changes in select areas of Africa, the information she provides is still very much in place in most of the continent. Therefore, you should plan on writing in present tense rather than past tense.

Prompt:

Discuss three cultural traditions and/or expectations African women experience, as outlined by Dr. Dolphyne. What impact do each of these three have on how women live or options they may want? For example, if the expectation is that women will marry young and have large families, are they encouraged or not to also get an education?

Provide a brief history of the sex offender notification/registration in the United States

Review the video titled, “The Role of Probation and Parole” found in this module’s Learn section. Expound upon ways to effectively manage high-risk sex offenders in our communities; consider challenges they may experience when attempting to reintegrate back into society. From a Christian viewpoint, justify whether or not life-long sex offender registration is a just concept.
