Algorithms Final Exam

Weight: 25%
Late policy: Late submissions not allowed. For completeness, as before, it is good to state anyway that there will be 25 pts penalty for every late day. But, this is the final exam and the letter grades need to be submitted shortly after the due date. Therefore, you may not get your letter grade if you submit late.
There are 5 questions and each one is 20 points.
When submitting the document, make sure you include all the answers in a single file (such as MSWord) and use the following filename format: YourFullName_Final.doc
For each question you must include a figure (or a table, or even a pseudocode) for demonstration such as the tables we create in Boyer-Moore or dynamic programming and explain that figure as part of your answer. You may not get full credit for a question without a figure and a sufficient explanation of it.
Graduate students: In addition to the items above, for each question (except Question 5) you must include a pseudocode and briefly explain it.
- In Chapter 8, Slides 14-19, we covered optimal binary search trees and explained how to compute the average/expected number of comparisons in a successful search in a given binary search tree.

Answer the following briefly:
- What is the greedy binary search tree for the table given in Problem 1 and what is its average number of comparisons.
- Is the following tree better than your solution? Why or why not?
- What is Huffman code (Chapter 9 Greedy Technique, Slides 16-17) for the symbols given in Table 1? Show your work.
- Slide 4 of Chapter 8, solve the problem for the following row with n=9

- In Chapter 6, Slide 34, heapsort is demonstrated using max-heap. Use min-heap to sort that list. Show your steps (what is your bottom-up constructed heap etc).
- Pick only one of the options below.
Option 1: Chapter 7, Slide 7 uses Horspool’s string searching algorithm. Solve that example using the Boyer-Moore algorithm. Explain your steps.
Option 2: In Chapter 7, we talked about the issues related to deleting an item from a hash table using Closed Hashing. Lazy deletion refers to the concept of marking an element as deleted, rather than erasing it entirely (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lazy_deletion). Explain how that can help on the example of Slide 20. After all the keys are inserted, perform the following:

Final Paper Guidelines
Intro to Film, Fall 2021
- This paper is due on 11:59 PM December 13th. It makes up 25% of your overall grade (20% for students in the Scholars Program. Late papers will be lowered a half grade for every day the assignment is late, with no more than 3 days after the final due date to submit.
- 7-10 pages in length, double-spaced, typed, 12 point font, with a title page (the title page is not part of the page count).
- Choose TWO FILMS to watch that are either:
A) of the same genre, you may choose from any of the following: western, gangster, musical, horror, sci-fi, film noir, adventure, comedy, action, romantic comedy, crime, fantasy.
OR
B) by the same director.
- Compare and contrast how the two films you selected use the elements of the ONE OF THE FOLLOWING in their narrative:
– mise-en-scène,
– cinematography
– editing
– sound
- Rather than offering a catalogue of your observations regarding the films’ similarities and differences, your essay should pose an argument about the significance of the connection. Your thesis should not simply state that, “films X and Y treat theme/character/plot element Z similarly and differently/similarly.” You should pose a theory as to WHY the filmmaker(s) made these specific stylistic choices and how they contribute to shape the overall form.
- Use specific examples of shots or scenes to support your argument. This is NOT a plot recap.
- Effective comparison/contrast essays highlight how similarities and differences reveal something important about each film, or the filmmaker(s). Ask yourself why it is important to examine these films together and what they reveal about either the genre or the filmmaker (depending if you choose A or B).
- Analyze the stylistic element in specific detail, but don’t just describe the technique used; try to determine their function in the films. Why might these stylistic choices have been made? What do they seem to mean for the film?
- No later than Monday November 1st by 11:59PM let me know your film selection and which element of cinema you will analyze for your take home paper. You will submit this through Canvas under the assignment “Final Paper Topic”. You do not need to upload as a .doc/.pdf, you can write it directly into Canvas with “text entry”. You will still need to come up with a thesis for your paper, but you do not need to submit this to me. I only need to know which films you’re selecting and which element of cinema you will be writing about.
- Example) “I will be exploring Quentin Tarantino’s use of mise-en-scene in Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Vol.1.”
- Example) “I will examine how sound is utilized in the horror genre by analyzing this stylistic element in The Shining and The Ring.”
Fundamental Attribution Error.
Although this assignment is title a “research” paper, it really more of a pseudo-research paper. Normally a researcher would begin by researching literature published by other researchers. By learning about a behavior, the researcher begins to design his or her own questions and research design. In our case, I am giving you the research design. In addition, our sample size (i.e. the number of people we are going to investigate) is way too small for us to generalize our results. Finally, what we are doing has already been studied. 🙂
With that being said, here is the assignment.
Students will complete the Attribution Assignment (see attached) and collect data from their participants. Once the data has been collected, students will research the Fundamental Attribution Error. Students will then compile their findings into a pseudo-research paper.
This assignment is worth 50 points and is due on December 4th. Please submit your assignment as an attached document.
Grading of this assignment is based on format, content, and application of material. Unlike the previous papers, this paper will include the main areas of published research.
- Introduction – In this section, student will introduce the reader to attributions and the Fundamental Attribution Error. This is where your research will go. What did you learn about attributions and what was your source?
- Methods – In this section students will describe what was done. How was data collected?
- Results – This is where students will communicate what they “observed” by gathering data from their participants.
- Discussion – Normally, the discussion and the introduction are the longest parts of published research. These are the areas the author (i.e. you) can expand on your ideas. It is also where the author explains what the results mean. For example, if evidence supports the Fundamental Attribution Error, how can we use this information to enhance our behavior?
- References – As with all of the other assignments, you must list your references on a reference page.
NOTE: Each of these “sections” should only be a short paragraph. The entire paper should be between 3 and 5 pages, not including your reference page.
Impact of the government’s fiscal package on the economy
An economy is performing at just under potential GDP with an output gap of -0.2%. Unemployment is low, at 4.5%, and firms are beginning to report difficulties in filling vacancies. Wage inflation is currently at 2.2%; inflation is at 1.8%. The central bank is operating a neutral monetary policy. This economy depends heavily on exports to fuel growth. Trading partners’ real GDP growth is forecast to increase strongly over the next three years. Next year is an election year. The current government has announced a fiscal package based around increases in current spending. This is a high income economy and it is not in a monetary union.
2. Explain the likely impact of the government’s fiscal package on the economy, using relevant diagrams and equations. How do you think the central bank is likely to react? Explain your answer. In your answer to question two, you should refer to the policy mix.
