Complete a VRIO or Value Chain analysis, a PESTLE analysis, and a Five Forces model for an organization.

Complete a VRIO or Value Chain analysis, a PESTLE analysis, and a Five Forces model for an organization. Prepare a 3-6-page executive report that analyzes the internal and external environments of the organization and recommends a course of action based on the analysis.

INTRODUCTION

AFI, VRIO, and value chain are just three concepts you need to understand as a business strategist. This assessment focuses on these important facets of business analysis.

INTRODUCTION

For this assessment, you will analyze the internal and external factors that shape and influence an organization’s strategy. Your work on this assessment will demonstrate your understanding of industry forces and how an organization can leverage its strengths to its advantage. This portfolio work project asks you to analyze the strategic process using the AFI framework. This analysis will clearly demonstrate your ability to think critically and strategically, and to use evidence to support your thinking.

SCENARIO

The vice president of strategy has asked you to prepare an objective analysis of the internal and external environments of the organization. She is hoping that your insight can be used to plan for the future direction of the company.

YOUR ROLE

You are a strategic analyst for the company you have selected to use in this course. The company has recently started the strategic planning process and needs to analyze the current internal and external environments.

Determine if the average annual price of car insurance for adults ages 18-25 will be the same in each state.

You are moving from New York to Massachusetts and trying to determine if the average annual price of car insurance for adults ages 18-25 will be the same in each state.  You collect a random sample of New York residents and Massachusetts residents between the ages of 18-25 and obtain the following statistics:

Sample SizeAverage Price of Car Insurance for 18 to 25-year-oldsSample Standard Deviation
New York33$7,978$986
Massachusetts25$8,421$702

For questions 3, complete the following steps for the given scenario:

  • Identify the observational units and sample sizes.
  • Identify the variables and classify them as categorical or quantitative.
  • Identify the statistics of interest.  What symbols should be used to represent them?
  • Describe the parameters of interest.  What symbols should be used to represent them?
  • Determine the null hypothesis and the alternative hypotheses.  Write the hypotheses in both words and symbols.  Remember: When comparing two means, our null hypothesis is always the assumption that the two means are equal.  That is, the difference between them is equal to zero.
  • Use either the Comparing Groups (Two Means) applet or the Theory-Based Inference applet perform a statistical analysis.  Determine the values and symbols that should be entered in the applet to create a distribution of simulated sample statistics.  Generate the distribution of simulated sample statistics and use the applet to calculate the p-value and the standardized statistic.  Include a screenshot of the applet, distribution, and p-value found.
  • Fill in the blanks for the statement interpreting the p-value.

If the average price of car insurance is the same in New York and Massachusetts for 18 to 25-year-olds, the probability of obtaining a difference in sample statistics at least as extreme as ______ is _______%.

  • In complete sentences, write a conclusion to the research question.
Write out the null and alternative hypotheses in words and symbols.  Identify the sample size and label it using the appropriate symbol.

A 2017 survey conducted by the National Science Foundation indicated that fewer than 15% of those currently employed in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field in the United States of America are under the age of 30.  You conduct a similar survey to determine whether a lower proportion of STEM field workers in your state are under the age of 30.  After collecting a random sample of 500 STEM field workers in your state, you find that 67 are under the age of 30.

(a) Write out the null and alternative hypotheses in words and symbols.  Identify the sample size and label it using the appropriate symbol.

(b) Determine whether it would be appropriate to use a theoretical approach to conduct a statistical analysis.

(c)Use the appropriate applet to generate a distribution of simulated sample statistics.

     i.  If the criteria have been met to use the Theory-Based Inference applet.

ii.  If the criteria have not been met to use the theoretical approach, explain how.  Using the One Proportion or the One Variable with Sampling applet and compare and contrast your simulated distribution with the normal distribution by using the “Normal Approximation” or “Overlay Normal Distribution” settings.  Use complete sentences.

iii.  Include a screenshot of the applet, distribution, and p-value found.

(d)  Determine the appropriate formula (based on your variable type and approach) to calculate the standardized statistic.  Write the formula symbolically, then show the calculation by substituting in the appropriate values, simplifying the expression using the appropriate order of operations, then round your answer to 3 decimals.

(e) Write a conclusion using complete sentences interpreting the p-value in the context of the research question.

Write out the null and alternative hypotheses in words and symbols.  Identify the sample size and label it using the appropriate symbol.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) determined that the average life expectancy for the U.S. population in 2018 was 78.7 years with a standard deviation of 6.5 years.  After learning this you decide to collect data from a random sample of Dutchess County obituaries from 2018-2020 to compare the life expectancy of Dutchess County residents to all United States citizens to determine whether Dutchess residents tend to live longer, or shorter lives compared to the national average.  A random sample of 51 local obituaries found an average age at the time of death of 75.6 years with a standard deviation of 10.3 years.   The sample data was approximately normally distributed.
