What does Waltz mean by “small states”? How does that designation relate to their power?
Once you have read this week’s readings, please complete this eResponse by writing concise but thorough answers to all of the following questions.
You must include page numbers in each question–your score will depend on it. I do not require any specific citation format. Just include (author last name, page number) at the end of the relevant sentences. Please note that you must cite when you draw any ideas from the text, whether or not you explicitly quote it. And you must draw your ideas from the text because that is the assignment.
Please be sure that if and when you use a direct quotation from the reading, you also explain what that quotation means in your own words.
- What does Waltz mean by “small states”? How does that designation relate to their power?
- Waltz uses four categories to describe small states’ contributions to the human rights project. Name and describe at least two of them (number your answers 2a and 2b), providing an illustrative example for each. (Be sure to review all four for our synchronous class discussion on Monday).
- What were the four castes/classes, in other words the social groupings of people, (that Knight describes) in Haiti leading up to the revolution? Next to each class, list the kinds of rights they were demanding.

do you think a concern for others without regard to concern for yourself can have negative consequences for both the individual and a group?
In I Kings 3:16-28, Solomon makes a very controversial decision as king. Though we may never know for sure if he would have actually gone through with what he threatened, we do know he used wisdom in solving conflict between the two women. The story also illustrates a stark contrast between individualism and collectivism in conflict. Individualism puts the needs of oneself above the group. Collectivism puts the needs of the group above oneself. These differing perspectives somewhat reflect the different styles of handling conflict. Using the principles in your textbook and/or other sources regarding styles of conflict resolution, discuss how each person in the story operated from different styles and perspectives that affected the resolution. How do you think things may have turned out differently if one or more had adjusted their perspectives either positively or negatively. Additionally, when do you think a concern for others without regard to concern for yourself can have negative consequences for both the individual and a group? Might an extreme in that direction hinder conflict resolution? Why or why not?
Is there something that would make the behavior change you are promoting into something fun, easy popular, etc.?
If you were in charge, what would be the behavioral change that promotes environmental health that would be your first focus? Some examples might be reducing energy usage, bicycling or using other friendlier ways of commuting, or changing dietary habits (these are just some examples-do of not feeling constrained by these or even the need to use one of these). How would you go about effecting change? Remember that most people are not like you and are not actively involved in understanding environmental public health. What about a social marketing strategy for your behavior change? Is there something that would make the behavior change you are promoting into something fun, easy popular, etc.?
If you were put in charge of the local government (NYC), what would you consider to be the first or most important environmental health issue that you can or could address?
Legislators and regulators must address competing priorities when considering how to ac environmental public health issues. These priorities include not just how important something might be but also the availability of methods and personnel to perform what they require, how effective those actions might be, how the actions would be paid for, and their cost-effectiveness. In a way, this is their version of a risk-balancing activity. If you were put in charge of the local government (NYC), what would you consider to be the first or most important environmental health issue that you can or could address? From the local government level, what would you do to address this issue? What if you were put in charge of the NY state government? What would you then consider to be the first or most important environmental health issue that you can or could address? From this state government level, what would you do to address the issue? What if you were put in charge of the federal government? What would you consider the first or most important environmental health issue you can or could address? From this federal government level, what would you do to address
