Analyze how patient satisfaction and experience measures contribute to goal setting and improvement in healthcare organizations

Leading Organization Quality Improvement 5th week
Week 5: The Patient’s Experience in Healthcare
For every action, there is a reaction, and among the reactions to the increased interest in patient experience has been skepticism about the measures and their importance. Providers worry that the measures reflect “hotel functions” rather than determinants of patients’ health outcomes.
—Nash et al., 2019, p. 236
Whether from a survey, panel, or individual interviews, collecting and measuring data about patient experience is not an easy task, or a task without controversy. There are many schools of thought concerning the best way to approach analyzing the patient experience, and there are many methods and measures used to analyze the patient experience.
This week, you will explore the measurement and analysis of the patient experience. In your reading and Discussion, you will examine the use of scorecards and dashboards for patient satisfaction. You will also consider the strengths and weaknesses of using these measurement devices and evaluate their impact on patient care and satisfaction.

Learning Objectives
Students will:
• Analyze healthcare organization scorecards and dashboards for patient satisfaction
• Summarize patient satisfaction and experience measures for a healthcare organization
• Contrast patient satisfaction and experience measures for healthcare organizations
• Analyze how patient satisfaction and experience measures contribute to goal setting and improvement in healthcare organizations
• Evaluate impact of patient satisfaction and experience measures on organizational performance
Discussion: Measurement Systems and Methods
You are a DNP-prepared nurse working at a hospital focused on improving patient satisfaction. After receiving care at your hospital, patients are provided a scorecard to survey their patient experience. The patient surveys range in questions from wait time to effectiveness of care, and these surveys provide your hospital with a scorecard indicating how the hospital is performing against these metrics. Upon reviewing the scorecards, you are able to highlight areas of improvement and areas of success, however, you find the responses are often difficult to analyze, as there are a wide range of responses, and there are many variables.
The process of constructing a balanced scorecard for the tracking of patient satisfaction can be controversial. For example, a hospital’s patient satisfaction scorecard provides a snapshot of gathered data for the hospital, but the data may be out of context, which makes it difficult to identify specific problems. It is evident that both scorecards and dashboards have a place in the healthcare setting; however, will all organizations and accrediting bodies agree on the aspects of implementation, data analysis, and levels of effectiveness?
For this Discussion, you will explore key indicators involved with the use of scorecards and dashboards for tracking organizational performance. Reflect on a particular healthcare organization or nursing practice with an established scorecard or dashboard measuring patient experience.
To Prepare:
• Review the Learning Resources for this week, and reflect on how a healthcare organization or nursing practice setting uses scorecards and dashboards.
• Select any healthcare organization or nursing practice setting that has an established scorecard or dashboard measuring patient experience and improvement goals.
• Be sure to obtain an example of the scorecard or dashboard from the healthcare organization or nursing practice setting (you selected) for this Discussion.
• Reflect on how these measurement systems and measurement methods may impact organizational goal setting in the areas of overall performance and financial stability.
• Explore the key indicators involved with scorecards and dashboards, as well as the external quality standards to which they are compared.
• Reflect on what the metrics used in the balanced scorecards and dashboards might mean to your specific organization and/or nursing practice. Has your organization established goals for these or similar metrics and are they currently being met? Why, or why not?
By Day 3 of Week 5
Post a brief descriiption of the healthcare organization or nursing practice setting you selected. Summarize the measures on the scorecard or dashboard in which patient experience of care is measured, tracked, and used to set improvement goals. Be specific. Explain whether goals at your organization are established, for these metrics you reviewed, and whether or not they are currently being met. Then, describe the potential impacts of meeting or not meeting these metrics for your healthcare organization, and explain why. Be specific and provide examples.
By Day 6 of Week 5
Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses and respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by expanding upon your colleague’s post or offering an alternative interpretation of the patient experience measures described by your colleague as they might relate to your specific practice or organization.

How do should the issues described in the case study and TED talk affect IHRM in MNEs?

Today, for most firms, it is still important to be located near your customers. But in the global war for talent, it may be equally important to be located in the best place to attract the high performers and specialists your business needs. Over the last few years, specific locations around the world have arisen as preferred places to live and work. High-talent employees can live in locales that enable them to find the work they want while they create the work – life balance that meets their current needs and still be near to others like themselves. So, where are such places? As it turns out, people don ’ t look so much at countries as they do at cities, and often it is small cities that provide the lifestyles they are looking for. For example, it includes Groningen, a small town in the north of the Netherlands, and Eindhoven, another small town — but major business location — in the Netherlands. Of course, the traditional, popular cities continue to have appeal, but there are also new areas — in every region of the world — that are attracting the talent that today ’ s MNEs need. In Europe, this would include an area marked on the map by a gentle curve drawn from Barcelona, across southern France, northern Italy, Switzerland, and southern Germany, an area that already boasts the highest per capita income in the world. The big cities of interest in Europe still include Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Nice, Berlin, Milan, Dublin, and Zurich. In Asia, these cities would include Sydney and Brisbane, Auckland, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangalore and Mumbai, Tokyo, Seoul, and Shanghai. In the Americas these cities would include Toronto Vancouver, Canada, Boston, Denver, Silicon Valley and San Francisco, and Seattle/ Portland, US, Monterrey, Mexico, and S ã o Paulo, Brazil. If a global firm cannot find talent where its customers want them to relocate, then maybe it needs to figure out where the talent is and go there. And compounding the problems in the search for global talent is the interest by today ’ s technology-savvy millennials to just work from home — wherever home may be — in an open, collaborative way — with colleagues and customers, wherever they may be.

explain how the regulatory environment and the regulations selected by your colleague differ from your state/region.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues* on two different days and explain how the regulatory environment and the regulations selected by your colleague differ from your state/region. Be specific and provide examples.

briefly describe that molecule in terms of the atoms it is made of and potentially the chemical bonds that keep the atoms together. Is this a beneficial molecule to consume? Explain why.

Topic 2 Molecules in Food

Before preparing your response to this week’s discussion topic please watch this video, a crash course in biological molecules:

Pick a type of food that you enjoy. Before you start researching, state a hypothesis about the nutritional content of this food. Remember a hypothesis is an educated guess (and may be wrong), and a good hypothesis is specific.

Then summarize what you learned from your research. Include an image of at least one molecule found in this food and briefly describe that molecule in terms of the atoms it is made of and potentially the chemical bonds that keep the atoms together. Is this a beneficial molecule to consume? Explain why. Did your research support your hypothesis?

Do you think the methodology used to complete this study was valid?

Week 6 Discussion Forum – Deadly Force

Assigned Reading: Thistlewaite and Wooldredge, Part 1, Chapter 5, Deadly Force: What explains the variation in police shootings across departments? pp. 98-105.

After reading the article answer the following questions in a discussion posting:

1. Do you think the methodology used to complete this study was valid?

2. What limitations do you see, if any, in the way the study was conducted?

3. Do you think that the amount of variation in the number of police shootings revealed in the study is as significant today as it was in 1977? Why or Why not?

Describe in your own words what type of research situations call for a researcher to use an ANOVA analysis.

Before you begin the assignment:

Read Chapter 14 in your Beginning Behavior Research: A Conceptual Primer textbook and Chapter 13 in your Discovering Statistics Using IBM SPSS Statistics textbook.

Review the video tutorial for an overview of conducting ANOVA analyses in SPSS.

Access and open the Test Performance SPSS data set.

An overview of the data set:

This data set represents hypothetical data from a study that examined how background music affected performance on a math test. Specifically, participants were randomly assigned to take a general math test with rock music, classical music, or white noise playing in the background. Further, participants were classified as being either high or low in math experience based on the number of college math courses they had taken.

Here is some more information about the variables in this hypothetical data set:

Number: The ID number of the participant

Sound: The type of background music participants heard while taking the test; 1 = rock, 2 = classical, and 3 = white noise

Experience: Participants who had taken three or more college math courses were classified as being high in math experience, whereas participants who had taken fewer than three were classified as being low. 1 = high and 2 = low

Anxiety: Anxiety during the test, with possible scores ranging from 0 to 50. Higher scores indicate higher levels of anxiety

Performance: Performance on the general math test, with possible scores ranging from 0 to 100. Higher scores indicate better performance on the test

Questions:

1) Describe in your own words what type of research situations call for a researcher to use an ANOVA analysis.

Type answer below:

2a) Use the Compare Means function (AnalyzeCompare MeansMeans) to compare the means of the three Sound conditions on Anxiety and Performance.

Paste output below (Read carefully: The best way to do this is to select “Copy Special” when copying from the SPSS output. Then select image as a format to copy. When pasting in Word, select Paste Special, choose a picture format, and then resize the image so it fits the screen):

2b) Based on these results, on which variable does it most appear there might be significant differences based on the Sound condition?

Type answer below:

3a) Conduct a one-way ANOVA on both Anxiety and Performance using Sound as the independent variable. That is, conduct two separate one-way ANOVAs, one with Anxiety as the dependent variable and one with Performance as the dependent variable.

Paste the output below (Read carefully: The best way to do this is to select “Copy Special” when copying from the SPSS output. Then select image as a format to copy. When pasting in Word, select Paste Special, choose a picture format, and then resize the image so it fits the screen):

3b) Based on these results, were either of your ANOVAs significant? How can you tell? Use a cutoff level of .05 for your decision.

Type your answer below:

4a) Remember that in a one-way ANOVA, we are only looking at the impact of one variable on the dependent variable. Factorial ANOVAs, on the other hand, assess the impact of multiple independent variables. Conduct a factorial ANOVA on Performance using both Sound and Experience as independent variables. Be sure to choose the option to view the estimated marginal means (by selecting ‘EM Means’ instead of ‘Options’) for all of your main effects and interactions—this will allow you to more easily interpret the results.

Paste your output for only the Test of Between-Subjects Effects below:

4b) Write the results of the ANOVA. For help, refer to the ‘How to Present the Results of a Two-way ANOVA’ section of this webpage.
