How does learning about music apply to your life and/or past experiences?
Please complete both parts:
1. Many composers kept diaries during their lives. Choose a composer from the twentieth (or twenty-first) century and an important event from that composer’s life. Consider how this event relates to the music the composer wrote. Write a diary entry related to that event in 1st person voice, as if the composer wrote it (Your choice should not be in the Jazz, blues, pop, rock, rap, or other popular music genres.). Provide a link to a sound file or YouTube video of the composer’s music, to help classmates become more familiar with this individual’s work. In the subject line for your post, include the composer’s name. List any websites or other sources you used to write your post at the bottom of the post.
2. What is your personal reaction/response to this composer and/or the music we have studied so far in class? How does learning about music apply to your life and/or past experiences?

Describe and analyze the process of socialization.
Instructions:
Describe and analyze the process of socialization. Begin with responding to the question “Who Am I?” In your description, make sure to incorporate the concepts we have addressed in the course, such as roles, statuses, group membership, etc. Next, analyze at least 4 agents of socialization that have affected your development as an individual, focusing on childhood socialization into adulthood. Consider, for example, the ways in which the family, religion, media, peers, and education have influenced your development, opportunities, and life choices. Incorporate at least 4 sociological concepts or theories covered in this course (hint: sociological concepts should be clearly identified and then applied. You are encouraged to use and cite sources here. Any paraphrasing or direct quotes used from another source should include APA formatted in-text citations. Examples of related concepts and theories include the self, moral development, nature and nurture, and resocialization).
What perspectives do you think a sociologist can bring to our understanding of everyday human behavior?
Observation Go to a public place and observe the people there for 25 minutes. What are the details of the location? Describe the general context (time of day, lighting, sounds, vibe/energy, etc.). Describe the people around you and their sociodemographic characteristics (age, race/ethnicity, gender/sex, socioeconomic status, etc.). Please contact your instructor if you have questions or concerns about visiting a public setting or need to discuss other accommodations. Norms Identify two or more social norms that people engaged in at the public place. A norm is a social rule. There are many norms that help to frame how we are supposed to behave in our daily lives, one example is gender norms (what are social rules we follow to ‘be masculine’ and to ‘be feminine’); another example is standing in line (consider what would happen if you cut everyone in line at 8am in a Starbucks?). Also consider any norm-breaking behavior that you observe. Concepts How do these norms you observed in the scene fit with sociological concepts and theories we’ve learned so far in class? Some examples of sociological concepts we’ve learned about so far include gender roles and emotional labor. (What is a “sociological concept?” They are all the concepts we’ve been learning each week in our course materials such as “socialization,” “norms” and “folkways.”) Reflection Reflect on your experience. How was this observing others through a sociological lens different from when you’ve “people watched” in the past? What perspectives do you think a sociologist can bring to our understanding of everyday human behavior?
How does social stratification influence the daily interactions of individuals?
Compare and contrast the functionalist view of social stratification and the conflict theory’s view of social stratification. How does social stratification influence the daily interactions of individuals? Illustrate your ideas with examples from everyday life and also consider this video on cultural capital. What are the possible connections between stratification and cultural capital in the U.S.? How do systems of class, based on factors such as prestige, power, income, and wealth, influence your own daily routines, as well as your beliefs and attitudes? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DBEYiBkgp8
Choose one painting by one of the artists listed above, and identify characteristics and techniques of the Renaissance style.
In this module, we looked at a variety of styles in the Renaissance in Italy. Artists like Botticelli, Bellini, Michelangelo, and Bronzino all incorporated Renaissance characteristics into their works, and yet their works look different from each other.
To address form and content in the artistic developments and trends that took place in the Renaissance, look closely at examples from each of these artists.
- Choose one painting by one of the artists listed above, and identify characteristics and techniques of the Renaissance style.
- Then, address how the work departed from typical Renaissance formulas to become signature to that artist’s particular style.
- Finally, why did you select this artist? What draws you to their work?
Respond to another student
- Read everyone else’s initial posting.
- Choose at least 1 other student’s work to respond.
- Write at least 4 sentences commenting on the aspect of their discussion.
- Feel free to continue the conversation and ask questions too.
- You must complete all parts of this assignment to receive credit.
(Minimum initial posting 150 words, response 50 words; 25 points)

Instructions Write a 6–8 page paper in which you explore the role of human services professionals in advocacy for social welfare policy. In addition to our course readings, you will need to review the literature on the social issues or problem you select in order to respond to some of the requirements below. Include the following in your submission:
Introduction

● Describe an advocacy effort, including its purpose, and the activities human services professionals could engage in to help create policy change for the social issue or problem.
https://crsreports.congress.gov/
● Explain why you would choose this particular form of advocacy for human service professionals to engage in regarding this social issue or problem.
● Analyze how effective these advocacy efforts may be for this social issue or problem and the reasons why these might be effective or ineffective.
● Synthesize the relationship between advocacy and public opinion for the selected policy.
● Discuss how this class has impacted your understanding of social welfare policy and your feelings about policy advocacy and social change.

Additional Requirements ● References: Include at least 10 peer-review journal articles. Only one
peer-reviewed article may be older than five years. Include one reference from the Congressional Research Service.
● Length of paper: 6–8 pages, not including cover and references. ● Communication: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional,
and respectful of the diversity, dignity, and integrity of others, consistent with expectations for members of the human services profession. Written communication should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
Describe how our day is shaped and constrained by social norms.
1) Observation
Create a field log (sample field log is provided below). For one day, observe and record the key interactions and institutions in your lived experience. Starting with waking up, who is the first person you talk to? What do you do next- take family members to school, go to the gym, go to work and interact with coworkers? Throughout the day you will take on different roles by interacting with different people and in different situations, and be in contact with different social institutions (education, government, health, etc). Type or photograph your field log and submit it with your written Assignment.
2) Application
Try to wait one or more days before starting this step. Revisit your field log and apply sociological analysis to your observations.
- Describe how our day is shaped and constrained by social norms.
- Analyze how at least four sociological concepts learned in class (eg. roles, institutions, interactions, impression management, stage theory, emotional labor) apply to your field log observations. This part of the discussion should not be focused on the general social norms you described earlier, dig in with specific concepts in this from our text (refrain from using dictionaries).
- For at least two of the concepts, find and incorporate an appropriate source that highlights how sociologists study this concept in everyday society (for example, emotional labor in the restaurant industry). For example, we discussed gender socialization:
- In an article by Crespi (2011) that studied gender socialization and gender roles within the family, results showed that a cross-gender relationship between fathers and daughters, mothers and sons has emerged as significant in determining traditional and non-traditional gender attitudes. The research suggested that the relationship with the parent of the opposite sex could be a strong factor in reducing stereotyped attitudes regarding gender roles (Crespi, 2011).
3) Reflection
Reflect on your role as a larger part of society (i.e. your motives, instincts, feelings, and/or structural constraints). Discuss ways other people affected you and the ways you affected others in the social experiences of your day.
