Respond to two colleagues:
Provide a suggestion for how a social worker could help clients to understand and make meaning of the trauma within the client’s values and belief framework.

An existential question is a philosophical question we ask in social work when working with a client who has experienced some sort of trauma. For my selected client, I am working with a youth who is struggling with mental health. These individual lacks family support, has abused substances in the past, and is facing juvenile related charges while on probation. This individual has reported feeling “lost” in life and is not motivated to do well. As a child, this individual experience various forms of abuse, physical, emotional, and sexual.

An existential question I would use to better support and understand this client is what are some purposes right now in your life? With this client struggling with ongoing mental health concerns, this existential question will allow the client to look at the positive values in life and can also allow the client to establish goals that will make the client successful.

I believe with working with this selected individual, there is a great potential for growth to overcome this trauma. This client is engaged in mental health counseling sessions. I have been very fortunate enough to establish great rapport with this client and have assisted this client with many activities to empower the client and to make them more successful while in treatment. This client has been extremely resilient in life and has faced many barriers and challenges on their own. With the support from the client’s clinician and case manager, the client has additional supports in place when overcoming any presenting problems.

As a social worker, I believe I have more potential growth to experience throughout duration of my career. In my career, I do believe I am able to build professional rapport with the clients and families I am working with. I believe conducting more research on diverse population on how to better assist my families would benefit my overall practice.
