Briefly describe your rationale for your topic selection. Include the scope of the issue/problem.

In my short, albeit busy nursing career, I have encountered respiratory complications time and time again. There has been an increased number of ventilated or newly trached patients, and there are very few senior elderly outpatient ratings. My patients are all middle-aged and elderly people. Some incapacitated patients report frequent falls, which suggests that their situation may be more complicated. The patients are between 35 and 80 years old. While intubated, patients are not receiving thorough exercising, thus causing loss of strength and function. Once weaned off the vent, patients exhibit profound weakness, thus increasing the risk of falls. Patients with falls have difficulty in daily activities that may lead to increased hospital stays. Initiation of a nurse driven routine involving performing range of motion, ordering the patient protein rich dietary supplements, and early mobility protocols can make it easier for patients to strengthen up, thus reducing falls. Installing patient alarms and training will reduce the incidence of falls and ensure that patients receive physical therapy and adequate nutrition to strengthen their muscles, or maintain muscle strength and tone, therefore improving their walking and standing strength and decreasing inpatient falls.
