ELAC Earthquake Hazard Preparedness Project

Final Project: Earthquake Hazard PreparednessIn this project, you will research about the impact of earthquakes and related phenomena such as landslides and liquefaction. This project is based on information provided in Module 2.Quick note: To receive a timely info about earthquakes in your area, I strongly encourage you to download the MyShake App to your smartphone. MyShake is an Earthquake Early Warning now available publicly in California, Oregon, and Washington. It delivers earthquake alerts provided in partnership with USGS ShakeAlert™ and CalOES. The App also provides earthquake information and damage reports shared by citizen scientists like you and enables the UC Berkley build a global seismic network.Furthermore, our local public radio station, KPCC, has put together an excellent podcast about earthquake risks called The Big One.Answer all of the following questions (Q1-Q4). Be sure that your post is in your own words (read this page about Academic Integrity). Plagiarized work will receive a grade of zero for the project. To receive full credit, your post should have no more than one (1) direct quotation, which means that you should paraphrase your answers and use proper citation standards.Below are the four questions (Q1-Q4) that you should address in your post.To answer Q1 and Q2, you will need to open the Earthquake Zones of Required Investigationinteractive map for California earthquake risk. How to use the interactive map:Type the address of any location on the top left of the interactive map. This will zoom in the requested location so you could find out about any earthquake risk in the area as well as identify any known faults and whether it lies on/near a landslide or liquefaction zone. Explanation to the color codes can be found by clicking the legend on the top right of the map (shown with icons of triangle, square, and circle). To answer Q3, you will have to do your own search in your textbook, in Module 2, or any other relevant and reputable source.Q1. Consider this hypothetical location: 425 Skyline Blvd, Millbrae, CA 94030.What earthquake hazard exists in this location? That is, is there any known fault, a landslide zone, or a liquefaction zone at or in the vicinity of this location? Would you want to live in this location. Why or why not? Describe your answer in detail in 3-7 sentences.Your answer must be based on your research using the Earthquake Zones of Required Investigationinteractive map.Q2. What is the earthquake risk for the location where you are currently living? Do you live near a known fault, within a landslide zone, a liquefaction zone? Describe all that apply in 3-7 sentences. When answering this question, you must include the name of the city you live in (without identifying the street address) in your post. This will be important for your instructor to verify whether you are located at or near a known fault zone or within a landslide or liquefaction zone.Again, your answer to this question must be based on the Earthquake Zones of Required Investigationinteractive map for California earthquake risk.Q3. What can you do to better prepare for the earthquake hazards you described in Q1 and Q2 above? Specifically, what steps have you already taken to prepare for an earthquake and what are three things that you plan to do in the near future to better prepare for an earthquake? Answer in 7-12 sentences.Q4. List at least two sources where you obtained information to help you better prepare for an earthquake (Q3). For this question you must cite the references that you used, including textbooks or websites, using both in-text citations and a reference list (for information on how to reference, check out the Purdue Online Writing Lab).__________________________________________________________________________________
