The discussion of the concept of implicit bias has been very prominent in the news, especially around the question of implicit bias toward people of color (esp. Black and Brown people and most recently Asian people). This week we will explore this concept of implicit bias as it relates to race/ethnicity.

We all have implicit attitudes as well as explicit attitudes?  I want you to chose an area that you might want to assess (1-Race, 2-Skin tone (light/dark), 3- Weight/body size, 4-Sexuality (gay, lesbian, bi-etc). Once you’ve chosen, answer this question:

What are implicit and explicit attitudes? How would you describe your explicit attitudes about race (or skin-tone, sexuality, weight-whichever topic you chose)?
