Write an informal essay compare “Young Goodman Browne” with The Witch. How do both depict American Puritan fears and religion? You may do some research on American Puritanism in Massachusetts, and research Nathaniel Hawthorne’s own relationship with the Salem Witch Trials. “Young Goodman Browne” uses allegory (extended metaphors) to explore the main characters fears and repressions. Does The Witch use allegory? How does the film convey religious fear of evil and the Devil? Do you think it is significant that the we never see the Devil’s face in the film? How would you characterize the Devil in the film? Is he a trickster, or more insidious and scary? Why does Thomasin make a deal with the Devil?
