Small-Scale Literature Review Assignment A literature review is a descriptive summary of research on a topic that has previously been studied. The purpose of a literature review is to inform readers of the significant knowledge and ideas that have been established on a topic. Its purpose is to compare, contrast and/or connect findings that were identified when reviewing researchers’ work. Oftentimes, literature reviews are written to ground a study in a particular context of what is known about a subject in order to establish a foundation for the topic (or question) being researched. The purpose of this assignment is to facilitate your abilities to research a topic of study so you can learn to (1) identify and formulate an inquiry question that defines what you’d like to learn, (2) apply your knowledge on reading research upon which Psych 199 is based, (3) analyze information found in psychology journal articles, and (4) synthesize new knowledge into a written small-scale literature review. Assignment Description: For this assignment you are asked to complete a small-scale (i.e., brief) literature review on a developmental psychology topic of your choice from the course. Open your textbook and pick something you thought was interesting as a topic! Think about anything else you would like to know about the topic (i.e., an “inquiry”). Then locate four developmental psychology journal articles on your topic, and write a 5-7 page literature review on the articles you’ve selected. Steps to complete your small-scale literature review: 1. Choose a topic from the course that you are interested in studying further or learning more about. 2. Formulate an inquiry question that specifically describes what more you would like to know about your topic. For example, if you were interested in the social psychology topic “conformity”, you would likely read-up on this topic, and then from that reading and your own reflection formulate a somewhat specific question such as “How is conformity involved with gang violence in the USA?”, or “How was conformity associated with Holocaust?” You will not write a question such as “What is conformity?”  The answer to THAT question is in your textbook. Your inquiry question is meant to be deeper than that; notice the use of the word “how” in the two inquiry question examples!! 3. Use the a library database to search for journal articles in peer-reviewed academic psychology journals that are associated with your topic (see accompanying library guide). 4. Choose just four (4) of the many articles that will come up in the search results based on whether they lend something to your attempt to answer the inquiry question associated with your topic. Note: Not every article that comes up in the search results will be useful! You will likely process/discard several by skimming the articles or reading their abstracts before making your final choices. 5. Read the four articles making note of each articles’ (a) key findings, (b) how the authors arrived at those findings (i.e., how they did their research), and (c, critical) how those findings help answer your inquiry question. 6. Use the outline on the next page as a foundation for writing your literature review, to be submitted online as a doc, docx, rtf, or pdf file on the due date as noted in Canvas.
