Task 2 Bearings are mechanical assemblies that consist of rolling elements and usually inner and outer races which are used for rotating or linear shaft applications. They constrain relative motion and are used to reduce the friction between moving parts. Rolling Element Bearings, which are a type of Anti-Friction bearings, are used in machines when it requires high precision, or when itis going to experience high levels of friction. They can be of different type depending on thetypes of rolling elements: balls, cylindrical rollers, spherical rollers, tapered rollers, needlerollers, etc.These rolling element bearings, which belong to the Class of Radial Bearings are designed towithstand forces that are perpendicular to the direction of the shaft, and /or radial loads. Figure1 shows the picture of two such types of Rolling element bearingsFigure 1: (a) Cylindrical Roller Bearing; (b) Ball Bearing You are required to do an Individual Project by performing deep study of any one type of Rolling Element Bearing, samples of which are shown in Figure 1a and 1b, using academic literature, product catalogues of renowned manufacturers of such bearings, technical magazines, etc, for its types, classifications, uses, material and methods of manufacturing, and heat treatment techniques applied on ball bearing material for improvement / enhancement of its mechanical properties. The findings of the study is to be submitted as an individual report as per the template given below in Table 1. All the discussions and arguments presented by the student in this task should be supported by appropriate references and be cited in-text in the report.
